B. Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s. -

CHAPTER TWELVE: OUTSIDERS’ MUSIC: PROGRESSIVE COUNTRY, REGGAE, SALSA, PUNK, FUNK, AND RAP, 1970s Chapter Outline I. The Outlaws: Progressive Country Music A. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, mainstream country music was dominated by: 1. the slick Nashville sound, 2. hardcore country (Merle Haggard), and 3. blends of country and pop promoted on AM radio. B. A new generation of country artists was embracing music and attitudes that grew out of the 1960s counterculture; this movement was called progressive country. 1. Inspired by honky-tonk and rockabilly mix of Bakersfield country music, singer-songwriters (Bob Dylan), and country rock (Gram Parsons) 2. Progressive country performers wrote songs that were more intellectual and liberal in outlook than their contemporaries’ songs. 3. Artists were more concerned with testing the limits of the country music tradition than with scoring hits. 4. The movement’s key artists included CHAPTER TWELVE: OUTSIDERS’ MUSIC: PROGRESSIVE COUNTRY, REGGAE, SALSA, PUNK, FUNK, AND RAP, 1970s a) Willie Nelson, b) Kris Kristopherson, c) Tom T. Hall, and d) Townes Van Zandt. 5. These artists were not polished singers by conventional standards, but they wrote distinctive, individualist songs and had compelling voices. 6. w Louise Bennett and the Mento Tradition ERIC DOUMERC I—^OUISE BENNETT, OR Miss Lou as she is popularly known, is probably the Jamaican poet most readily associated with dia• lect — or "patois" as it is called in Jamaica — and with the defense of this language. Miss Lou is primarily known as a per• former of dialect poetry and as the champion of the people's language, even though until the late 1960s she was not recog• nized as a writer; after all, she was only "doing dialect" (Markham 46). The ig6os and the coming of independence brought her a measure of recognition with an article written by the leading poet and critic Mervyn Morris and with the publica• tion of a collection of her most popular poems, edited by Rex Nettleford in 1966. In 1982, Morris edited a second collection of Bennett's poems; a record of one of her "performances" in London was released by Island Records in 1983. Her work "in dialect, and with dialect" (Markham 46) is now fully recognized and she has become an established writer, as is shown by the masterful study of her poems by Carolyn Cooper. Miss Lou is often and rightly referred to as the champion of dialect verse and as the godmother of performance poetry , but it should also be pointed out that her poetry comes out of a specific musical and cultural tradition: the Mento tradition. The poet Linton Kwesi Johnson once remarked: "If anything, Miss Lou is working in a mento tradition rather than a dub tra• dition" (Markham 256). -

Swanzy, Henry Valentine Leonard (1915–2004) Gabriella Ramsden https://doi.org/10.1093/odnb/9780198614128.013.57680 Published online: 12 November 2020 Swanzy, Henry Valentine Leonard (1915–2004), radio producer, was born on 14 June 1915 at Glanmire Rectory, Glanmire, co. Cork, Ireland, the eldest son of the Revd Samuel Leonard Swanzy (1875–1920), rector of Glanmire, and his wife, Joan Frances, née Glenny (1888–1975). His brothers John and Leonard were born in 1917 and 1920 respectively, the latter after the death of their father. The family subsequently moved to England. Henry attended Wellington College and won a scholarship to New College, Oxford, achieving first-class honours in modern history. In order to pursue a career in the civil service, he learned French and German, and he travelled around Europe. After four years in the Colonial Office, where he progressed to assistant principal, he joined the BBC in 1941. On 12 March 1946 Swanzy married Eileen Lucy (Tirzah) Ravilious, née Garwood (1908–1951), daughter of Frederick Scott Garwood, an officer in the Royal Engineers, and widow of the painter, designer, book engraver, and war artist Eric Ravilious. Following her death in March 1951, on 22 July 1952 Swanzy married Henrietta Theodora Van Eeghan (1924–2006), with whom he had two sons and a daughter. Swanzy began his career as a producer for the general overseas service, but it was his involvement in the radio programme Caribbean Voices between 1946 and 1954 that he was best known for. He encouraged writers from the Caribbean to contribute stories and poems. This fostered the careers of many notable West Indian writers, two of whom, Derek Walcott and V. -

Una Marson - Transcript When World War 2 broke out in 1939, thousands of men and women from across the West Indies were joining up to fight for the Allied cause, whilst others signed up for factory work. Many would be stationed in Britain, nearly four thousand miles from home. The BBC realising that serving men and women would want to send messages to loved ones, launched the programme Call the West Indies, which mixed personal messages, music and inspirational stories of war work. The young woman, who produced and presented the show was a true pioneer, the first black producer on the BBC’s payroll and once described as “the most significant black British feminist of the interwar years.” But her life and work have often been overlooked, so today we remember Una Marson: Una was born near Santa Cruz in rural Jamaica on 6 February 1905 to Reverend Solomon Isaac and Ada Marson. She was the youngest of nine children, three of whom her parents had adopted and the family was relatively prosperous for the time. Her father was a strict baptist preacher and even as a young child, Una was rebellious, fighting against the restrictions imposed upon on her by culture and tradition. But she was extremely bright and her sisters introduced her to poetry which she would describe as “the chief delight of our childhood days”. Una had been born into a British colonial world and was heavily exposed to English classical literature. Early on she felt instinctively opposed to the idea perpetuated at the time that in some way her own race was inferior.
