Issue 107 MARCH 23RD, 2020 Cover: violinist Jascha Heifetz (1901 - 1987). Many consider him to be the greatest violinist ever. He was one of the most influential performing artists of all time and in his later years became a teacher and an advocate of causes he believed in, including clean air and the establishment of 911 as an emergency phone number. Stay safe. Be careful out there. Maintain social distancing. Wash your hands frequently. Familiar phrases in these tough times. To those I’d add: listen to music. Read a book or magazine. Watch a movie. Play your instrument. Surf the web. Don’t let the endless barrage of TV news make you crazy. Ignore (except to debunk) misinformation on Facebook and social media. Call or video chat with a family member, friend or loved one. Though we may be temporarily separated, we’re all in this together and we’ll help each other stay strong. In this issue: Anne E. Johnson gives us incisive looks into two of the modern era’s greatest artists: Frank Sinatra and the Kinks! John Seetoo contributes his CanJam NYC 2020 Part Two report. J.I. Agnew continues his series on linearity in audio, with clear explanations of this technical topic. Tom Gibbs gives unrestrained opinions on Brandy Clark, King Crimson, Charlie Parker and Tame Impala. Professor Larry Schenbeck enthuses about Sanctuary Road, a new oratorio. Dan Schwartz asks: why don’t musicians use audiophile speakers? Veteran broadcaster Bob Wood shakes his head over the state of today’s commercial radio. Wayne Robins provides a step by step operating manual for Miss Anthropocene by Grimes.

  • WDAM Radio's History of Elvis Presley
Listeners Guide To WDAM Radio’s History of Elvis Presley This is the most comprehensive collection ever assembled of Elvis Presley’s “charted” hit singles, including the original versions of songs he covered, as well as other artists’ hit covers of songs first recorded by Elvis plus songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis! More than a decade in the making and an ongoing work-in-progress for the coming decades, this collection includes many WDAM Radio exclusives – songs you likely will not find anywhere else on this planet. Some of these, such as the original version of Muss I Denn (later recorded by Elvis as Wooden Heart) and Liebestraum No. 3 later recorded by Elvis as Today, Tomorrow And Forever) were provided by academicians, scholars, and collectors from cylinders or 78s known to be the only copies in the world. Once they heard about this WDAM Radio project, they graciously donated dubs for this archive – with the caveat that they would never be duplicated for commercial use and restricted only to musicologists and scholarly purposes. This collection is divided into four parts: (1) All of Elvis Presley’s charted U S singles hits in chronological order – (2) All of Elvis Presley’s charted U S and U K singles, the original versions of these songs by other artists, and hit versions by other artists of songs that Elvis Presley recorded first or had a cover hit – in chronological order, along with relevant parody/answer tunes – (3) Songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis Presley – mostly, but not all in chronological order – and (4) X-rated or “adult-themed” songs parodying, saluting, or just mentioning Elvis Presley.

My colleague and fellow scribe Tony Wilson had secured the precious black vinyl LP and dropped it onto the turntable, awaiting my reaction. We were immediately transfixed by the brash, bold sounds that fought their way out of the lo- fi speakers – Robert Plant’s screaming vocals, the eerie Hammond organ sounds of John Paul Jones, and Jimmy Page’s supreme guitar mastery. But amid the kaleidoscope of impressions, the drums were the primary element that set pulses racing. We marveled at the sheer audacity, the sense of authority, the spatial awareness present on every track. Within moments, John Bonham’s cataclysmic bass drum triplets and roaring snare rolls had signaled a new era of rock drumming. The first time I saw Bonham up close was in December 1968, at The Marquee Club on Soho’s Wardour Street. While The Marquee has long held a mythical status in the rich history of the London rock scene – hosting early appearances by such legendary bands as The Who and The Rolling Stones – it was actually a dark and rather cramped facility with a tiny stage that fronted an even stuffier dressing room.
