GALIANO CONSERVANCY ASSOCIATION Rockfish populations around Galiano Island Freedom to Swim: Research Component for Rockfish Recovery Project 2013 Rockfish populations around Galiano Island Page 2 of 18 Executive Summary Rockfish (Sebastes), of the Scorpionfish family, are unique to the Pacific Northwest. As of 2012 there are 8 species listed as threatened or of special concern by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC). Canary, Quillback and Yellowmouth rockfish are listed as ‘threatened’; Rougheye Type I, Rougheye Type II, Darkblotched, Longspine Thornyhead, and Yelloweye (outside waters and inside waters populations) rockfish are listed as ‘special concern’. Both species of Rougheye and both populations of Yelloweye rockfish are also listed under the Species At Risk Act as ‘special concern’. These predatory fish can live at great depths, and tend to live very long lives of 80 or more years (Lamb and Edgell, 2010). These factors, when combined with their primarily territorial lifestyles, have made them particularly susceptible to overharvest. There is a strong need to protect these species with enforced no‐take marine protected areas, and we can only hope that recent conservation efforts will be enough to recover some of the most depleted populations (Lamb and Edgell, 2010; McConnell and Dinnel, 2002). In the late 1980s the commercial rockfish fishery boomed, which led to a series of management responses in the 1990s to attempt to recover the rapidly depleting stocks in BC (Yamanaka and Logan, 2010). This also occurred in the US as a direct result of pressure on the salmon stocks ‐ fishermen were urged to divert their attentions to bottom fish (McConnell and Dinnel, 2002). -

Observations on the Gorgonian Coral Primnoa pacifica at the Knight Inlet sill, British Columbia 2008 to 2013 By Neil McDaniel1 and Doug Swanston2 May 1, 2013 Background The fjords of British Columbia are glacially-carved troughs that snake their way through the coastal mountains, attaining depths as great as 760 m. Knight Inlet is especially long, extending 120 km northeast from an entrance located 240 km northwest of Vancouver, near the north end of Vancouver Island. Despite a maximum depth of 540 m it has a relatively shallow sill lying between Hoeya Head and Prominent Point with a maximum depth of only 65 m. Due to the shallow nature of the sill, tidal currents frequently exceed 0.5 m/second. ____________________ 1 [email protected] 2 [email protected] 1 The site has been of particular interest to oceanographers as the classical shape of this sill results in the presence of internal gravity waves and other interesting hydraulic phenomena (Thompson, 1981). As a result, university and federal government scientists have undertaken a number of oceanographic surveys of these features. In the early 1980s researchers surveying the depths of Knight Inlet with the submersible Pisces IV encountered large fans of gorgonian coral on the flanks of the sill at depths of 65 to 200 m (Tunnicliffe and Syvitski, 1983). Boulders of various sizes were found scattered over the sill, many colonized by impressive fans of Primnoa, the largest 3 m across. The fact that this gorgonian coral was present was noteworthy, but the scientists observed something else extremely curious. Behind some of the boulders were long drag marks, evidence that when the coral fan on a particular boulder became big enough it acted like a sail in the tidal currents. -

OLIN* Abstract: The goal of this ongoing research and outreach is to expand the West Coast shellfish industry through creation of triploid seed and demonstration of efficient culture methods for the native purple-hinge rock scallop (Crassadoma gigantea). Shellfish aquaculture is a low trophic level means of seafood production that provides many benefits to coastal communities and the environment, while at the same time increasing the supply of locally produced safe and nutritious seafood. There is a strong desire to develop native species for aquaculture development to diversify the shellfish industry and help to avoid concerns often voiced today about the use of non-native species. While new native species of shellfish for aquaculture are highly sought after, there are also genetic concerns associated with rearing native species for aquaculture using hatchery-reared seed that may have undergone significant domestication selection or been produced from distant broodstock populations. This may occur as a normal consequence of rearing in the hatchery environment or through highly directed selection, crossbreeding, or other means to genetically change the production characteristics of the organism. These risks are significant and must be addressed to realize the potential for growth of the U.S. west coast shellfish industry. Issues associated with potential genetic risk to wild rock scallop populations could be resolved through the creation of tetraploid scallop stocks, which could be mated to diploids, producing 100% triploid offspring, or by using chemical means. -

PACIFIC REGION INTEGRATED FISHERIES MANAGEMENT PLAN CRAB BY TRAP APRIL 1, 2021 TO MARCH 31, 2022 Dungeness crab: Cancer magister This Integrated Fisheries Management Plan is intended for general purposes only. Where there is a discrepancy between the Plan and the Fisheries Act and Regulations, the Act and Regulations are the final authority. A description of Areas and Subareas referenced in this Plan can be found in the Pacific Fishery Management Area Regulations. FOREWORD The purpose of this Integrated Fisheries Management Plan (IFMP) is to identify the main objectives and requirements for the Crab by Trap fishery in the Pacific Region, as well as the management measures that will be used to achieve these objectives. This document also serves to communicate the basic information on the fishery and its management to Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) staff, legislated co-management boards, and other stakeholders. This IFMP provides a common understanding of the basic “rules” for the sustainable management of the fisheries resource. This IFMP is not a legally binding instrument that can form the basis of a legal challenge. The IFMP can be modified at any time and does not fetter the Minister's discretionary powers set out in the Fisheries Act. The Minister can, for reasons of conservation or for any other valid reasons, modify any provision of the IFMP in accordance with the powers granted pursuant to the Fisheries Act. Where DFO is responsible for implementing obligations under land claims agreements, the IFMP will be implemented in a manner consistent with these obligations. In the event that an IFMP is inconsistent with obligations under land claims agreements, the provisions of the land claims agreements will prevail to the extent of the inconsistency. -

The 2002 Beach Watchers class rearticulated the 600 pound California sea lion (Zalophus Californiaus) for an educational display at the Cama Beach State Park visitor center. After discovering Salty dead on one of Camano's beaches, the 2002 Beach Watchers class took on Salty's revival as their class project. Several Beach Watchers transported Salty from the beach to Cama Beach State Park, where the sea lion was butchered, tagged, num- bered and boiled. Once the excess meat was scraped off and the bones soaked in ammonia, the bones were bleached with hydro- gen peroxide and baked before assembly. "Our objective was to create a focal point for an environ- mental display of native sea life, showing their interaction and im- portance to the health of our wa- ters, along with an awareness of their greatness," said David Baumchen, project co-chair. "This was an exciting, hands-on project that everyone in the class worked on."
