Dr. Heather D. Wilkins Professor Department of Biological Sciences

About seven years ago, I began to have problems with my back and sciatic nerve. My physical therapist suggested that I attend water aerobics and swim in the pool, because it alleviated stress on my joints while allowing me to build muscles around the weak area in my back. Since then I regularly attend water aerobics and have worked up to swimming three to five miles a week. The benefits have been amazing. My mobility and endurance have greatly increased while my back and sciatic issues are minimized. In addition, I have lost over 30 pounds and hope to use swimming to continue my weight loss journey.

Heather’s Motivation: •Before I began swimming regularly, I really didn’t have an exercise regime that I enjoyed and looked forward to, but now that I know how much I enjoy and look forward to the time I spend at the pool, it is much easier for me to make it a regular part of my day.
