BIO
Laura James, better known as LJ, trained as an actor and earned her BFA in Theater Arts with an Acting emphasis. She moved to LA and found herself working in feature film production. Luckily she discovered improv where she spent her time performing and eventually teaching. Naturally this led to sketch comedy where she started directing. And that was it! She was hooked! LJ switched gears and became one of the go-to directors of sketch shows that did really well on the festival circuit. Never one to shy away from a challenge, she kicked it up a level by becoming one of the main directors for “The Neutrino Project”, an improvised film project where she sharpened her skills in storytelling, working fast and collaborating with actors.
With the hopes of directing television, a lifelong dream, she got her foot in the door as an Acting/Dialogue Coach at Disney Channel and used that opportunity as her film school and springboard to open the doors to directing episodes. She got her first shot on the hit Disney Channel show, “Austin & Ally” where she directed multiple episodes. She also directed digital shorts series for Disney Channel and a music video for solo artist Pat Kearns.
She is best known for quickly creating rapport with actors and crafting incredible performances, working fast without sacrificing quality, navigating politics with ease and being a confident and collaborative leader.
LJ is one of two participants to have been chosen for the Disney Channel Multicamera 360 Program. She was also honored to have been chosen to participate in the highly competitive inaugural DGA Director Development Initiative which includes being paired with veteran director Andy Cadiff as her mentor. She is very active at the DGA, and was recently elected as the Co-Chair of the Women’s Steering Committee.
