All early settlers in riorth ^ast Tex^o passed through here. Gamino Heal led from here through Nacogdoches to San Antonio and from there to Monclova, Cohuilla and thence to Mexico City. This place is so excellent in scale that it might serve as a model to pattern all houses of this type. In the photograph the fence hugged the face of the porch so tightly that it was impossible to have the'-house without the fence. The posts are trimmed logs and nicely spaced. Generally, the house consists of a breeze-way through the center with a large room on each side and at the rear .there is architecture's first off-spring, a lean too, whether the shingle roof dates from 1820 is open to question but the owner is to be congratulated that the shingles have been replaced and that he did not succumb to some ubiquitious seller of corrugated iron.

    Underground Railroad Route Along El Camino Real de las Tejas By Rolonda Teal July 2010 Challenge Cost Share Program National Trails Intermountain Region National Park Service Underground Railroad Route Along El Camino Real de la Tejas Project Background In eastern Texas and western Louisiana, El Camino Real de la Tejas was formed from a series of trails used by Caddo Indians for travel between villages. Spanish colonists took over parts of those existing trails for the transportation of animals, military, civilian and religious personnel as well as supplies. Camino Real translates simply as the “King’s Highway” and continued to be used in this way throughout Spanish dominion. French citizens from Louisiana also used the same paths for illegal and legal trade and as a means of travel to San Antonio to conduct business. After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, portions of El Camino Real that were associated with the American period became known as the Old San Antonio Road. El Camino Real represents a series of paths that intercepted at various points along a main thoroughfare and not just a single road. In all, the King’s Highway as defined by the National Park Service extends from Monclova, Mexico to Natchitoches, Louisiana and covers approximately 2,400 miles in distance (NPS 1998:1). In 1911 the Texas chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution adopted a resolution calling for formal identification and marking of the historic road. MajorV. N. Zively was hired to survey the route in an attempt to identify original portions of the road. A year later Zively reported that portions of the road could definitely be identified.

Steinen This document was written by Bill Sears about 1988 at his home in Vero Beach, Florida. He had retired in 1982 after a career teaching anthropology and archaeology at from Florida Atlantic University. He was working on a book of his professional memoirs, intended to summarize the many archaeological sites he had worked on in Georgia and Florida from 1947 until his retirement. He wrote chapters on his 1948 excavation at the Wilbanks site (9CK5) in the Allatoona Reservoir (Sears 1958), on his 1953 excavation at the famous Etowah site (9BR1), and on his 1947-1951 excavations at the Kolomoki site (9ER1) published in four volumes (Sears 1951a, 1951b, 1953, 1956). These three sites constituted the bulk of his archaeological excavations in Georgia. Apparently he never wrote the intended chapters on his archaeological work in Florida, and the book was never completed. Following his death in December of 1996 (see Ruhl and Steinen 1997), his wife Elsie found the three chapters in a box and passed them on to one of us (Steinen). The chapters on Etowah and Wilbanks are being published separately. The document we present here is his unpublished chapter on the Kolomoki site. It provides a fascinating look at the state of archaeology in Georgia 65 years ago and is filled with pointed insights on many people.

    Bayou Bartholomew Alliance Fall 2000 Vol. 7. Bayou Cleanups Dominate Fall Schedule The last two Saturdays in September served as the dates for volunteer cleanups in Jeffer- son and Lincoln Counties. On the 23rd a group of volunteers removed enough trash from the Ohio St. bridge area to fill two 16 ft. trailers 5 ft. high. There was so much trash that the cleanup had to be halted due to lack of room on the trailers. Another trailer load was removed from a site near the Jefferson/Lincoln County border on the 30th. Two future cleanups are scheduled in Drew and Ashley Counties as well. The Drew County cleanup is set for October 14th at 8:00 a.m.. It will take place at the bridge crossing Ables Creek near the community of Selma. Volun- teers are asked to meet at the old white church on Hwy. 293. The Ashley County cleanup is scheduled for October 28th at a site near Little Bayou WMA and Lake Grampus. Volunteers will gather at the community of Boydell on the west side of Hwy. 165 at 8:00 a.m. Anyone is welcome to attend the Bayou Bartholomew Alliance (BBA) sponsored clean- ups. The BBA does not have a “membership” in the traditional sense of the word. We consider our members to be all the people who live along the bayou as well as other interested parties from around the state and the nation. Essentially, anyone who cares about restoring and maintaining the beauty and health of Bayou Bartholomew is a member of the BBA.

This dissertation uses archival and interpretive methods to examine the life and contributions of Mary Smith McCrory Jones in Texas. Specifically, this project investigates the ways in which Mary Jones emerged into the public sphere, utilized myth and memory, and managed her life as a widow. Each of these larger areas is examined in relation to historiographicaly accepted patterns and in the larger context of women in Texas, the South, and the nation during this period. Mary Jones, 1819-1907, experienced many of the key early periods in Anglo Texas history. The research traces her family’s immigration to Austin’s Colony and their early years under Mexican sovereignty. The Texas Revolution resulted in her move to Houston and her first brief marriage. Following the death of her husband she met and married Anson Jones, a physician who served in public posts throughout the period of the Texas Republic. Over time Anson was politically and personally rejected to the point that he committed suicide.
