ASSOCIATION OF FUNDRAISING PROFESSIONALS AND ASSOCIATION OF FUNDRAISING PROFESSIONALS FOUNDATIONS FOR PHILANTHROPY

www.afpglobal.org MESSAGE FROM ANN HALE, CFRE, CHAIR, AFP

AFP represents the fundraising profession. On its face, that statement seems obvious. We are the Association of Fundraising Professionals—of course we represent the profession. But take a step back and think about what representing the profession truly entails. Does AFP just exist to provide you with fundraising skills and a code of ethics? Or does our obligation extend further? Do we champion not just the profession, but also every single one of you—each and every member and their own unique professional career and goals? Does our mission reach Ann Hale, CFRE beyond your skills and training and into the social impact sector and your Chair, AFP workplace, ensuring you operate in an environment that helps you flourish? I am so proud that AFP is increasingly taking the broader view of our mission and addressing issues not directly related to fundraising but that still impact fundraising and the ability of each and every member to advance in the profession. All the skills and training in the world don’t matter if you work in a culture that is unsupportive, toxic or even unsafe. The launch of our Women’s Impact Initiative in March of this year marked a critical point in AFP’s evolution, tackling significant issues such as pay equity and harassment that affect not just our profession but society in general. Our ground-breaking survey on sexual harassment—showing that one in four women have been harassed in the workplace—demonstrates the extent of the problem we face. The initiative is also addressing the issue of equity. For example, we know that while women represent at least 70 percent of the profession, they account for only 30 percent of senior management fundraising positions. In its first year, the Women’s Impact Initiative is creating research to identify the scope of the challenges and then developing resources to address them. I’m excited about the work of the initiative, and it’s been so rewarding to receive so much positive feedback from members. These issues are important to you as well, and it gives us confidence moving forward as we look at other important topics. 2018 was an incredible year for AFP in other areas too. In November, we launched our new, state-of-the- art website. It’s easier to read and navigate and adjusts seamlessly no matter if you’re reading it from your computer or smart phone. The website ushers in a whole new era and level of service delivery—serving as the foundation for a new series of programs and benefits we will be rolling out in the coming years. As part of our increasing focus on leadership issues for fundraisers of all levels, we have added key staff to improve our capacity and member service. We also dramatically expanded our advocacy efforts, pushing for the universal charitable deduction in the U.S. and working with the new Special Committee on the Charitable Sector in Canada. And all of this happened because of our continued strong financial standing and the incredible work of our staff and board. So please take a look at our annual report for 2018 and learn more about everything AFP has done to advance not just the profession, but you—each and every individual member. I hope you’ll see how committed AFP is to ensuring that you work in a culture and a profession that supports your growth and your entire career.

2 | 2018 ANNUAL REPORT MESSAGE FROM SCOTT DECKSHEIMER, CFRE, CHAIR, AFP CANADA

2018 was the first full year that AFP Canada operated in the AFP community, working to advance fundraising in Canada. Like any new organization, we experienced a few growing pains since being formally incorporated in May 2017, but I’m incredibly proud of the sheer number of projects, campaigns, documents and resources we have developed for Canada’s fundraising profession. In 2018, we produced the Fundraising is Awesome! Document, which captures the dimensions, purpose and energy of the profession in Canada. It’s an incredible—or more accurately, awesome—document to share with those Scott Decksheimer, CFRE new to the profession or considering fundraising as a career. It’s also a great Chair, AFP Canada reminder for more experienced practitioners about the collective impact of what we accomplish every year. Documents like Fundraising is Awesome! provide baseline information important to fundraisers and the public and set the foundation for conversations as we change public perceptions about fundraising. Public policy is a critical issue for AFP Canada. We have a great opportunity to move the needle of legislation affecting fundraising and philanthropy with the creation of the Senate Special Committee on the Charitable Sector, chaired by Sens. Terry Mercer and Ratna Omidvar. Several members of AFP, including myself, testified before the committee on new public policy ideas that could significantly improve and enhance both philanthropy and the work of the nonprofit sector in our country. To further capitalize on the Senate Committee, we greatly expanded our Day in the Ridings project, meeting with 130 Members of Parliament to discuss issues related to fundraising and philanthropy. There are plenty of other projects and resources I could highlight—our member value matrix, our work with the media, and the support of our Foundation’s work with the What Canadian Donors Want report and the inspiring Fellowship in Inclusion and Philanthropy program. But I want my message to be more than just a list of things that AFP Canada has done for you. Equally important is the sense of community that the board has been endeavoring to create. We are one AFP— both across Canada, and, just as critically, across the entire AFP global membership. There is an incredible amount we can learn from the broader AFP community and that they can learn from us. That’s why I’m excited that documents like Fundraising is Awesome! and our membership value matrix are inspiring staff and volunteers at AFP Global. At the same time, I’m so proud that AFP Global is addressing issues such as women’s equity and sexual harassment in the profession, and that AFP Canada is a key advocate for this campaign while also providing a unique perspective on these topics that will resonate with our members. AFP Canada’s mission is to represent you and the fundraising profession, providing you personal skills, training and knowledge while ensuring that the fundraising environment and our workplaces are conducive to professional advancement. And we’ll do that, working hand-in-hand with each of you, as well as AFP Global and of course, the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy–Canada. We’ve had a great first year-and-half, and I’ve been honored to serve as the first chair of our organization. Our work is in great hands as I pass the baton to Paula Attfield in 2019. Many thanks to all of you for your support, feedback, questions and comments, and my deepest appreciation for your dedication to ethical and effective fundraising.

2018 ANNUAL REPORT | 3 2018 PROGRAMS, INITIATIVES, ACHIEVEMENTS AND MILESTONES

• AFPGLOBAL.ORG: All of us at AFP were so proud to be able to launch the fundraising community’s new website both early and on-budget. Based on your feedback and input, we developed a website that not only provides member benefits like education, networking and the latest trends and information, but also helps tell the story of our profession and the impact we have on society. The new website will serve as the hub for much of AFP’s work in the future, and many thanks to all of you who helped us on this project from day one! • Microlearning Videos: You told us you’re busy, you want content in different formats, and you want it fast and to the point. We heard you loud and clear. Our microlearning videos are short informal videos—2 to 3 minutes long—that share key learning objectives about important topics. More videos will be coming every month, and most will be members-only. • Women’s Impact Initiative (WII): It’s not enough just to provide education and training—AFP must work to ensure that every member of the profession has the same opportunities to find success and advance as far as they want in the profession. In March, we published the first-ever comprehensive survey about sexual harassment in the fundraising profession, sponsored by the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy—U.S. and in partnership with The Chronicle of Philanthropy. Our Women’s Impact Initiative continues to work on issues related to harassment, the salary gap, and many others, with more research and programs coming in the future. • AFP Connect: We know that networking is such an important member value and that members get so much information and perspective simply from talking with each other. That’s why we launched AFP Connect in 2018—so you can share with fundraisers from around the world— and there are already hundreds of conversations on these members-only online forums. Ask your question, join a group, share your own experience and get the information you need from professionals who understand your challenges and opportunities. • Advancing Philanthropy: Even with so many programs moving online, we know many of you still want a written publication giving you in-depth knowledge and perspective from experts and pioneers in the field. We remade our flagship publication, Advancing Philanthropy, and are now sending a copy to every member, though you can still read it online if you wish. Comprehensive, forward looking, and chock full of information you need to know, our magazine is a must-read! • ICON (International Conference on Fundraising): Seeing so many of your colleagues all together—more than 3,500—can be so inspiring and make you realize why you became a fundraiser in the first place. We started to reimagine ICON in 2018, and that process will continue into 2019. You can still get continuing education credits and order recordings of sessions from ICON 2018.

4 | 2018 ANNUAL REPORT • Research: Research is an important member benefit, and AFP made it a priority in 2018. Our Compensation and Benefits Survey showed another significant gender gap, so we’re developing new research on that issue. Findings from the Nonprofit Research Collaborative and the Fundraising Effectiveness Projectare generating discussions and content about donor retention, the impact of the economy and other issues. We also launched the fourth iteration of our What Canadian Donors Want survey. AFP and our foundations authored and/or sponsored research on these issues and many more in 2018. • Leadership Academy: Leadership development is becoming a huge emphasis for AFP, and we started our work by redesigning the Leadership Academy. We sold out the Academy for this time this year, and you’ll see even more changes in 2019 in Phoenix, Oct. 3–5. • Policy and Advocacy: Government policy can have a huge impact on our organizations’ fundraising, and AFP represented the profession on numerous issues in 2018. AFP worked to educate Congress on the impact of the 2017 tax changes on charitable giving and pushed for legislation allowing all donors an opportunity to take a charitable deduction whether or not they itemize their taxes. We also submitted comments to the Internal Revenue Service on proposals to limit the charitable deduction for state and local tax credits, as well as to several state and local governments about fundraising regulations and registration. In Canada, AFP recommended several provisions to the Canadian Parliament, including designating a federal department to oversee the charitable sector, and testified before the Special Senate Committee on the Charitable Sector about ways to improve fundraising and the operations of the sector. AFP Canada also held its second Day in the Ridings event, meeting with more than 130 Members of Parliament, introducing AFP and talking about fundraising and philanthropic policy issues. • Chapters and Members: We are honored to serve fundraising professionals around the world every year. We ended 2018 with more than 30,875 memberships in 240 chapters across the globe. For their tremendous work in advancing ethical and effective fundraising on the local level, 37 chapters were honored with the Ten Gold Star status and 86 other chapters with the Ten Star status. We also awarded the Friends of Diversity designation to 90 chapters for their commitment to diversity and inclusion in the profession. • Promoting Philanthropy: In 2018, more than 125 AFP chapters held National Philanthropy Day events around the world, involving more than 50,000 people and recognizing donors, volunteers, corporations, foundations and others involved in the philanthropic process. AFP launched its special National Philanthropy Day website and published two special supplements on giving and philanthropy through a partnership with The Globe and Mail in Canada.

14 | 2018 ANNUAL REPORT AFP FOUNDATION FOR PHILANTHROPY–U.S.

It has been a profound privilege to serve as the chair of the US Foundation for the last two years. We have moved from a time of trepidation to a future of optimism and growth. I want to thank an amazing group of colleagues and staff at AFP and the US, Canadian, and Mexican Foundations for their diligent perseverance and belief in our Association. I believe the US Foundation is now coming into its own and is well-positioned to truly become the “Foundation for Philanthropy,” an organization that can have a real impact, not only within AFP but even Brian Bonde, ACFRE beyond our sector. We must continue to serve and fundraise amongst our Chair association members, but now is also the time to start looking externally both for our support and in our service. With our new Case for Support, we have the tools we need to seek that external support. The case outlines an ambitious four-part strategy to strengthen our sector. 1. Attract and Develop Fundraising Leaders 2. Support Research on Critical Issues in Fundraising 3. Build a Stronger Sector Through a More Diverse Workforce 4. Renew Public Trust in Charitable Organizations While it is important to always be looking ahead, it is also great to reflect on the impact that the Foundation has provided to the fundraising profession. Some of the highlights and milestones of the Foundation’s 2018 work included: • Making Educational Opportunities Available—For the 2018 AFP International Conference on Fundraising in New Orleans, the Foundation provided 134 Chamberlain Scholarships (for first- time attendees), 23 Diverse Community Scholarships and 11 Collegiate Scholarships, giving scholars the opportunity to engage with thousands of fundraisers at the largest fundraising conference in the world. The Foundation also granted 15 Leadership Scholarships for members to attend the 2018 Leadership Academy in Toronto, Ont. • Supporting AFP Chapters—The Foundation distributed $100,828 back to chapters who achieved or exceeded their BE the CAUSE fundraising goals. Chapters then used these funds to fund a variety of professional education, leadership development, ethics and public awareness programs in their communities. • Leadership Development—the AFP Leadership Academy in Toronto, Ont., was sponsored by the US Foundation for the third year. The Foundation is proud to provide this important educational opportunity for our chapter leaders and fundraising professionals on their leadership development. • Research—the Skystone Partners Research Prize was awarded to Beth Breeze, for her book, “The New Fundraisers: Who Organises Charitable Giving in Contemporary Society?” I am pleased with the growing strength of the US Foundation. But we are just at the beginning of realizing our potential.

2018 ANNUAL REPORT | 15 AFP FOUNDATION FOR PHILANTHROPY– CANADA

The AFP Foundation for Philanthropy–Canada is proud of the many achievements and impact made possible through the support of our donors. As I think back on 2018, some significant accomplishments are worth noting. First, the Foundation is excited by AFP’s growth in Canada and the creation of the new AFP Canada Board that quickly became an important partner and collaborator of the Foundation’s work. In 2018 a joint AFP in Canada Strategic Plan was approved by the boards of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy–Canada and AFP Canada in partnership with Roger Ali, MBA, CFRE Chair our Canadian chapters. Through the strategic planning process, chapter leaders were engaged in developing our collective mission to serve our members. By having all the entities involved, the process brought value and buy-in to our association and the future.

Second, my vision as chair of the AFP Canada Foundation was to develop an integrated fundraising plan that includes the Every Member Campaign, our major gifts work and our twenty chapters across Canada. An integrated fundraising plan framework was developed that speaks to the respective roles of each entity and highlights how our work is complimentary but independent with respect to revenue generation. Third, having Mike Geiger, MBA, CPA, join AFP as the new president and CEO in late 2017 brought a new vision to AFP overall that include the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy—Canada. With his leadership there is a renewed sense of trust in the association and a greater sense of confidence. Being a member of the CEO Search Team allowed the AFP Canada Foundation to have a voice in the selection process. I believe that Mike has done and will do great things for our association. There are many remarkable stories in 2018 of the Foundation supporting the advancement of the fundraising profession and helping each member reach his or her own true potential. For me, some of the highlights of the year were: • Supporting Local Initiatives—The Foundation granted more than $31,000 back to chapters to help fund programs on the community level that advanced fundraising and philanthropy. These grants included scholarships to local programs and offering fundraising education in the community. • Making Education Opportunities Available—Forty-nine individuals were able to attend high-quality educational events, including the AFP International Conference, AFP Toronto Congress, AFP Leadership Academy, and local/regional gatherings through $17,025 in scholarships granted by the Foundation through the National Scholarship Program, James Julien Scholarship and Mo Davies Bursary Fund.

16 | 2018 ANNUAL REPORT • Advancing Fundraising Knowledge—The “Fundraising, Feminism and Disruption: Stories, Conversations, and Creating True Change Together” was livestreamed from the Toronto Congress with the Foundation’s support. • Promoting Diversity and Inclusion—Through a grant received from Canadian Heritage, 18 Fellows began the Fellowship in Inclusion and Philanthropy Program. • Research for the Fundraising Profession—The fourth iteration of “What Canadian Donors Want” was completed and a complementary webinar was offered to members. As I reflect back on my time as chair, I think about the ethical standards that AFP upholds and the sea of professionals who are united in providing important services to our communities. The work of the Canada Foundation validates why our members get involved and volunteer for AFP. It has been my honor to serve as chair.

2018 ANNUAL REPORT | 17 AFP FOUNDATION FOR PHILANTHROPY– MEXICO

The AFP Foundation for Philanthropy–Mexico is continuing to create impact for the fundraising and philanthropic sector across the country. 2018 was our third full year of operation, and it has been a time of rewarding partnerships. We received a third generous grant from IBM De México Comercialización Y Servicios, S De R.L. De C.V, which created two online courses in Spanish on “Legal and Tax Requirements for Nonprofits” and “How to Develop a Case Statement”. The updated AFP Fundamentals of Fundraising was translated into Spanish as well. Ana Luisa Ramirez The 3rd National Encounter of Mexican Chapters was held in Monterrey, Chair Mexico on June 14–15, 2018. The chapters partnered with Tec de Monterrey in sponsoring the event with 120 attendees.

In addition, the Foundation also continues to work with INDESOL, a Mexican governmental agency, to provide fundraising education and AFP scholarships to small nonprofits across the country. The Board would like to thank all of our donors who have supported the Foundation through their gifts of time, money and commitment. Your engagement is what makes our work possible. We look forward to working with you well into the future as we further build the story of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy–Mexico and its impact upon our country’s fundraising.

32 | 2018 ANNUAL REPORT 2018 CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Each year, the AFP Foundations are privileged to support a variety of scholarship programs to help fundraisers attend the AFP International Fundraising Congress. Individuals who work in nonprofit organizations use this opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills in fundraising and to exchange ideas with colleagues from all over the world. One such program is the Chamberlain Scholars program. This program provides the opportunity for a first-time attendee from each AFP chapter to attend the International Conference on Fundraising. These scholarships are funded by contributions to the BE the CAUSE Campaign and through a planned gift from Ralph E. Chamberlain, CFRE, a deeply committed philanthropist and AFP volunteer who began his distinguished career in 1960. In addition, the Foundations also support the Diverse Communities in Fundraising Scholarship Program, as well as the Collegiate Scholarships Program, for new fundraisers in our collegiate chapters. AFP appreciates all the donors who supported these programs to help fundraisers attend the 2018 AFP International Fundraising Conference in New Orleans, La.
