KOHL KARI FREDERICKSON HAROLD SELESKY DIANNE BRAGG A DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of History in the Graduate School of The University of Alabama TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA 2017 Copyright David Jonathan White 2017 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT This dissertation examines the collapse of southern Unionism between October 1859 and April 1861. This study argues that a series of events of violent antislavery and southern perceptions of northern support for them caused white southerners to rethink the value of the Union and their place in it. John Brown’s raid at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, and northern expressions of personal support for Brown brought the Union into question in white southern eyes. White southerners were shocked when Republican governors in northern states acted to protect members of John Brown’s organization from prosecution in Virginia. Southern states invested large sums of money in their militia forces, and explored laws to control potentially dangerous populations such as northern travelling salesmen, whites “tampering” with slaves, and free African-Americans. Many Republicans endorsed a book by Hinton Rowan Helper which southerners believed encouraged antislavery violence and a Senate committee investigated whether an antislavery conspiracy had existed before Harpers Ferry. In the summer of 1860, a series of unexplained fires in Texas exacerbated white southern fear. As the presidential election approached in 1860, white southerners hoped for northern voters to repudiate the Republicans. When northern voters did not, white southerners generally rejected the Union. -

Photo Source: Digital Commonwealth. 60 61 Fitchburg’s Abolitionist Legacy: Anti-Slavery Pageants at the Fitchburg Normal School, 1911-1932 DaRRen baRRy Abstract: !is article examines the Fitchburg Normal School’s anti-slavery pageant and its use as a tool for educating future teachers and public school children. !e Historical Pageant to Illustrate the Contest Between Slavery and Freedom aimed to teach students about the evils of human bondage and the Northern Civil War e"ort to abolish it. Fitchburg was home to widespread anti- slavery activism during the decades before the Civil War. Many of the pageant’s long and varied themes can be connected to local Fitchburg events. Although the pageant resisted the then-popular romanticizing of the Civil War that erased slavery and racial inequality as primary causes, it also demonstrates the limitations of early twentieth-century American progressivism. For example, it portrayed African Americans as mere bystanders to the abolitionist drama. !is article adds to our knowledge about the nation’s #rst teacher training or “normal” schools by illuminating the content taught at these in$uential institutions, particularly on the important topics of slavery and the Civil War. More signi#cantly, it sheds light on how normal school graduates may have translated that content material to their own students after being hired as classroom teachers all over the country. -

Glatthaar © 2016 Eric Michael Burke ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Eric Michael Burke: Egyptian Darkness: Antebellum Reconstruction and Southern Illinois in the Republican Imagination, 1854-1861 (Under the direction of Harry L. Watson) Historians have identified an antebellum Republican “critique of the South” outlining the detrimental effects of slavery on white Southern society and the vital importance of “reconstructing” the white South in the image of the free labor agrarian North following the eventual collapse of slavery. The efforts to follow through with this transformation have historiographically been relegated to efforts of radical Republicans to reconstruct the ex- Confederacy between 1863 and 1877. This paper argues that Republican strategies and efforts to “reconstruct” the white South were evident during the late antebellum period (1848-1861) applied to the southern counties of Illinois which were inhabited chiefly by Southern “poor white” migrants. The Afro-Native American artist is best known for her thematic sculptures such as Forever Free (1867), Hagar (1875), and Death of Cleopatra (1876). The academic attention paid to these works obscures the fact that portrait busts account for over a third of her artistic output. Consequently, Lewis’s portrait busts have not received a concentrated analysis. Who were the individuals portrayed? What were their relationships to the artist? Using Lewis's bust of James Peck Thomas (1874), her only existing portrait of an African-American patron as a case study, this study explores these two questions in depth. “A SECOND DEGREE OF SLAVERY”: HOW BLACK EMANCIPATION FREED THE DEEP SOUTH’S POOR WHITES by KERI LEIGH MERRITT (Under the Direction of James C. Cobb) ABSTRACT Because antebellum southern history has been interpreted primarily through studies of slaves and planters, poor whites remain understudied. Generally defined as owning neither land nor slaves, poor whites comprised between 30 and 50 percent of the South’s white population on the eve of secession. By the 1840s and 50s, slavery had notably reduced the demand for white laborers, creating a large underclass of impoverished whites who spent long periods of time unemployed or underemployed. Poor whites could not compete – for jobs or living wages – with profitable slave labor. Their rampant poverty sometimes led to the familiar accompanying psychological and social ills of alcoholism, domestic violence, and criminal activity. Preferring to live outside of society and sometimes outside of the law, poor whites made inviting targets for a southern legal system dominated by slaveholders, who generally incarcerated them for behavioral, non-violent “crimes” like trading, drinking, and other social interactions with slaves and free blacks. Poor whites’ discontent had reached a critical point in the few years before secession, as they began forming labor unions and demanding freedom from competition with blacks, at times even threatening to withdraw their acceptance of slavery. Ultimately, this divisive socio- economic inequality between whites helped to push planters to the brink of Civil War. Although many poor whites objected to the Confederate cause, slaveholders used threats of imprisonment or vigilante violence to impress them into service. During Reconstruction, poor white workers were finally able to compete in a free labor economy.
