Biographical Sketch Alvo E. Albini was the Director of Public Relations at Loyola University Chicago from 1967 to 1983. He first worked as a reporter for his local newspapers in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He received his bachelor‟s degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1940 and later received his master‟s degree in journalism from the Medill School of Journalism. While working as Director of Public Relations for Loyola, he organized the public relations for Loyola‟s year-long 100th anniversary and Loyola‟s ten year $180- million capital campaign, which included the groundbreaking and dedication of the medical center, the Cudahy Library addition, the science hall, the law school, and the sports center. After his retirement in 1983 he continued to live in the Chicago area and worked as a consultant. However, he spent most of his time focusing on his passion for reading and writing. He frequently researched at the Northbrook Public Library on topics ranging from the life of Bento de Goes to Abraham Lincoln‟s cabinet. Alvo Albini passed away in March of 1994 at the age of 77.

Scope and Content The Alvo E. Albini papers consist of 8.33 linear feet spanning the years 1967- 1994, and include photographs, correspondence, photocopies and documents, magazine articles, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, audio cassettes tapes, typed and handwritten notes, and literary works. Although some material relates to Albini‟s public relations career at Loyola University, most relate to Albini‟s writings on various subjects including Bento de Goes, Emperor Akbar, and Abraham Lincoln‟s Cabinet. Languages in the collection are English and French; some notes are in shorthand.

Series 1: Loyola Papers, 1957, 1967-1973, 1976, 1978-1979, 1982-1983, 1985, n.d., Boxes 1-3 This series contains materials relating to Albini‟s tenure as Loyola‟s Director of Public Relations including photocopies of documents, correspondence, office memos, press releases, photographs, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, papers, and a few books. Subjects include Loyola‟s community programs, the Jesuit Renewal Program, Cardinal Dell‟Acqua, and Loyola‟s 1982 “East Meets West: The Jesuits in ” Symposium which centered on . Some materials are in French and some notes are in shorthand.

Series 2: Bento de Goes Literary Works and Research, 1984-1990, 1993, n.d., Boxes 3-6 This series contains materials related to Albini‟s historical-fiction novel on the life of Bento de Goes, Brother Bento, and all subsequent offshoots of that novel. Series includes photocopies, typed and handwritten notes, drafts of literary work, magazine articles, notebooks, papers, maps, and newspaper clippings. Subjects include Bento‟s life in the , Bento as a soldier in , Bento‟s conversion to the Society of Jesus, and Bento‟s Journey to Cathay, China.

Series 3: Akbar Literary Works and Research, 1985-1990, n.d., Boxes 6-7 This series contains materials related to Albini‟s historical-fiction literary works on Emperor Akbar, and includes photocopies of research, typed and handwritten notes, drafts of literary works, magazine articles, notebooks, papers, and newspaper clippings. Subjects include Jesuit interactions with Akbar, Akbar‟s Christian wife, Akbar‟s death, and Akbar‟s tomb.

Series 4: Short Stories, 1988, Box 7 This series contains materials related to Albini‟s short story works independent of the Bento novel and Akbar stories. Series includes typed and handwritten notes, drafts of literary works, and correspondence. Subjects include the fictional diary of a Jesuit priest in Malabar and Catholic confessionals.

Series 5: Lincoln’s Cabinet Literary Work and Research, 1989, 1992-1993, n.d., Boxes 7-9 This series contains materials related to Albini‟s historical literary work on Abraham Lincoln‟s Cabinet, The Senseless War in Lincoln‟s Cabinet, and the series includes photocopies of research, typed and handwritten notes, drafts of literary work, one book, correspondence, note cards, and newspaper clippings. Subjects include Edwin Stanton, President Buchanan, Gustavus Fox, Fort Sumter, and the Monitor v. Merrimack naval battle.

Series 6: Additional Research, 1983, 1985-1993, n.d., Boxes 9-15 This series contains materials unrelated to Albini‟s above literary works and includes photocopies of research, typed and handwritten notes, magazine articles, pamphlets, note cards, notebooks, correspondence, maps, and newspaper clippings. Series 7: Cassette Recordings 1984, 1987, 1990-1994, n.d., Box 16 This series contains thirty nine audio cassette tapes with recordings from a Loyola lecture by Father Burrus and a Portuguese language learning tape, but most tapes feature discussions from WGN Radio‟s Extension 720 talk show. Subjects are religion, the 100th Anniversary of the Newberry Library, Margaret Thatcher, and William Kennedy. Some segments may be inaudible.
