    RICHARD ROWE (S65-74) He has successfully sailed round the world as part of the BT Global Challenge in 1996/7. This is his story of that epic journey. Background I first heard of Chay Blyth’s Global Challenge race in 1992 when the fleet of boats for the first race visited St Katharine’s Dock in London before their race start. I can remember thinking that the crews were mad to be going round Cape Horn and across the southern oceans, the wrong way around the world. I little realised that four years later I would be one of those crews - and this time feeling proud, excited and a little apprehensive about taking part. I was a late recruit to “Courtaulds International”, one of the fourteen 68 ft, 42 tonne steel yachts. I only signed up in June 1996. Just enough time to hand in my notice from my contract in Hong Kong and arrive back in the UK at the end of August, 4 weeks before the start. In those four weeks, I got to know the rest of the crew very well socially but with little opportunity to understand their sailing abilities. All of them had sailed before, though most only on the three years of weekend training provided by The Challenge Business run by Chay Blyth. Leg 1 - Southampton to Rio De Janeiro The start on the 29 September was a sudden awakening to the realities of ocean racing with 45 kn winds, lumpy seas and driving rain. “Courtaulds International” performed well and gave us early confidence of its ability to sail well in bad weather.

Sachs This research used a qualitative exploratory approach to investigate the experiences of professional sailors who competed in a fully crewed around-the-world race known as the 2005/06 Volvo Ocean Race (VOR). Specifically, the following areas were examined: (a) the various environmental, technical, and interpersonal demands that make the VOR an extreme sport, (b) the impact of these demands on the sailors’ performances, (c) the strategies used by the sailors to maintain high levels of performance, and (d) the sailors’ reasons for competing in the race. Participants were 15 professional sailors, ranging in age from 23-49 years ( M age = 35.9 years; SD = 7.4), who competed in the 2005/06 VOR. After receiving approval from the Temple University Institutional Review Board, the iv researcher recruited participants who were subsequently required to provide informed consent to participate in the study. Using a semi-structured interview format, face-to- face interviews were completed with three sailors in Miami, FL, and with nine sailors in Valencia, Spain (three interviews with individual participants, one interview with two participants, and a focus group with four participants).

    Three new crew members join Team SCA Three new crew members have joined Team SCA to add to the growing squad of women who now form part of the team. It was confirmed today that Dee Caffari (GBR), Sara Hastreiter (USA) and Elodie-Jane Mettraux (SUI) would all be joining Team SCA, leading global hygiene and forest products company SCA's, all-female team in the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15. Caffari (41) is no stranger to ocean racing having competed in the Vendée Globe Race, the Global Challenge, Barcelona World Race and four transatlantic races. She is the only woman to have sailed solo around the world in both directions (east about and west about) as well as being the only female to have sailed around the world three times non-stop. She also holds the female crewed monohull Round Britain and Ireland speed record, a record she established in June 2009, with Team SCA crew mate Sam Davies. Hastreiter (29) has been working towards double-handed offshore racing on Class 40’s and other short-handed races as well as campaigning to do a Trans-Atlantic. She has sailed over 40,000 nautical miles and has competed in races including the Caribbean 600, Newport to Bermuda Race, IRC Nationals, NYYC Race Week, Antigua Race Week and the St. Thomas Rolex Regatta among many deliveries and working on various boats around the world. Mettraux (29), whose sister Justine joined the team earlier this year, is one of four under-30’s in the squad. She joins the squad from a rich sailing background with the Geneva Training Center, which she has managed for a number of years.
