  • Italy 2016 Itinerary
Italy 2016 with Dr. Marc Shapiro July 26 - August 3, 2016 ITINERARY (subject to change) Tuesday 26 July : Rome Arrival in Rome airport, followed by transfer to the hotel. Begin sightseeing (from the hotel) at 1 PM in the former ghetto area of Rome. Rome is the oldest Jewish community in the Diaspora, and its ghetto remained longer than anywhere else in Europe. As part of our tour, we will see the Jewish Mu- seum, the Great Synagogue, and the Trastevere, where there is evidence of the medieval Jewish com- munity. We will also visit the Campo Di Fiori where, on Rosh Ha-Shanah 1553, the Talmud was burned. In the evening, enjoy a welcome dinner. Accommodations : Hotel Ponte Sisto Wednesday 27 July : Rome Breakfast. This morning begins with a visit to the Arch of Titus and its famous Menorah that, as we will learn, does not correspond to other ancient descriptions. We will then visit the Colosseum, with its legacy of horrors and bravery as slaves fought for their lives to the roars of spectators cheering and booing. This massive structure was actually built with slaves brutally seized after putting down the Jewish Revolt in Eretz Yisrael. Continue to the ruins of the Roman Forum, an international center filled with great palaces and all the pomp that we connect with names like Caesar, Nero and Ci- cero. Later, drive to the Spanish Steps and soon find yourself in the romantic setting of the glorious Trevi Fountain, beloved spot for many great films made in “Roma.” After lunch, enjoy the afternoon at leisure to explore Rome on your own or join an optional tour of the Vatican Museum.

400 TRASTEVERE 401 TRASTEVERE rastevere (map p. 702, A3–B4) is the area across the Tiber (trans Tiberim), lying below the Janiculum hill. Since ancient times there have been numerous artisans’ Thouses and workshops here and the inhabitants of this essentially popular district were known for their proud and independent character. It is still a distinctive district and remains in some ways a local neighbourhood, where the inhabitants greet each other in the streets, chat in the cafés or simply pass the time of day in the grocery shops. It has always been known for its restaurants but today the menus are often provided in English before Italian. Cars are banned from some of the streets by the simple (but unobtrusive) method of laying large travertine blocks at their entrances, so it is a pleasant place to stroll. Some highlights of Trastevere ª The beautiful and ancient basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere with a wonderful 12th-century interior and mosaics in the apse; ª Palazzo Corsini, part of the Gallerie Nazionali, with a collection of mainly 17th- and 18th-century paintings; ª The Orto Botanico (botanic gardens); ª The Renaissance Villa Farnesina, still surrounded by a garden on the Tiber, built in the early 16th century as the residence of Agostino Chigi, famous for its delightful frescoed decoration by Raphael and his school, and other works by Sienese artists, all commissioned by Chigi himself; HISTORY OF TRASTEVERE ª The peaceful church of San Crisogono, with a venerable interior and This was the ‘Etruscan side’ of the river, and only after the destruction of Veii by remains of the original early church beneath it; Rome in 396 bc (see p.

Each year, the Eternal City’s numinous qualities draw millions of devout Christians to undertake a pilgrimage there just as they have for nearly two millennia. Visiting the most venerable sites, culminating with St. Peter’s, the Mother Church of Catholicism, the processional journey often reinvigorates faith among believers. It is a cleansing experience for them, a reflective pause in their daily lives and yearly routines. Millions more arrive in Rome with more secular agendas. With equal zeal they set out on touristic, educational, gastronomic, and retail pilgrimages. Indeed, when in Rome, I dedicate at least a full and fervent day to “La Sacra Giornata di Acquistare le Scarpe,” the holy day of shoe shopping, when I visit each of my favorite stores like so many shrines along a sacred way. Although shoes are crucial to our narrative and to the completion of any pilgrimage conducted on Opposite: The Trevi Fountain, 2007. • Third Rome’ Circus Maximus As a Space of Fascist Simulation
fascism 3 (2014) 20-45 brill.com/fasc The Factory of Illusions in the ‘Third Rome’ Circus Maximus as a Space of Fascist Simulation Aristotle Kallis Department of History, Lancaster University, Lancaster, United Kingdom [email protected] Abstract Although the site of the ancient Circus Maximus was one of the most loaded spaces of the Fascist ‘Third Rome’, it has received limited attention as a privileged site where a dizzying array of myths and illusions were entertained, simulated, and deposited as new Fascist layers on Rome’s urban and mnemonic palimpsest. Previously a decayed, ‘unsightly’, and overcrowded hodgepodge of layers of life, his- tory, and memory, it was substantially restored, ruthlessly emptied of its previous life, and then used for a multitude of Fascist rituals and projections (parades, cele- brations, exhibitions, mass spectacles). In this article, I explore the diverse facets of the circus’s transformation in the 1930s and argue that the site was used as a prime space of enacting and simulating the full thrust of the Fascist regime’s regenerative repertoire, involving erasure and disruption of layers of the past, new additive ele- ments and spatial practices, as well as a multitude of projections of a decidedly modern Fascist new order and temporality. Keywords Fascism – Third Rome – Circus Maximus – space – modernism – romanità – exhibi- tions – architecture The site of the Circus Maximus, the most impressive in scale ancient circus in Rome, has hosted a kaleidoscope of discordant memories across the two mil- lennia of its history. Religion and entertainment, grandiose construction and decay, spectacle and utility, grandeur and poverty – all have inscribed their traces on layers upon layers of soil and memory deposited on the site.

  • Chiesa Di San Luigi Dei Francesi in Campo Marzio
(092/37) Chiesa di San Luigi dei Francesi in Campo Marzio San Luigi dei Francesi is the 16th century titular and French national church located near Piazza Navona in rione VIII (Sant’Eustachio). The full dedication is to the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Dionysius (St Denis) and St Louis IX, King of France. History: The site was acquired by the French community in Rome from the monks of the Abbey of Farfam in 1478. The deal was facilitated by Cardinal Guillaume d'Estouteville. Pope Sixtus IV approved the project, sponsored by King Louis XI, and authorized the foundation of the Confraternita della Concezione della Beata Vergine Maria, San Dionigi et San Luigi Re di Francia, the ancestor of the present Les Pieux Etablissements. The area was full of remains of Roman buildings, including the Baths of Alexander Severus and the Baths of Nero. Pope Sixtus IV (1471-1484) confirmed the exchange uniting various small churches into a single parish in honor of “The Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Dionigi (Denis) and St. Louis, King of France” (patron saints of the French nation), and also set up a Confraternity with the same name to manage the area. In the early 16th century, the Medici family took over. Cardinal Giulio de Medici, later Pope Clement VII, commissioned Jean de Chenevière to build a small round church for the French community here in 1518. Building was halted when Rome was sacked in 1527. In the mid-16th century, with the support from Caterina de’Medici who lived in the nearby Palazzo Madama, a new church was begun.
