The History/Literature Problem in First World War Studies Nicholas Milne-Walasek Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for a doctoral degree in English Literature Department of English Faculty of Arts University of Ottawa © Nicholas Milne-Walasek, Ottawa, Canada, 2016 ii ABSTRACT In a cultural context, the First World War has come to occupy an unusual existential point half- way between history and art. Modris Eksteins has described it as being “more a matter of art than of history;” Samuel Hynes calls it “a gap in history;” Paul Fussell has exclaimed “Oh what a literary war!” and placed it outside of the bounds of conventional history. The primary artistic mode through which the war continues to be encountered and remembered is that of literature—and yet the war is also a fact of history, an event, a happening. Because of this complex and often confounding mixture of history and literature, the joint roles of historiography and literary scholarship in understanding both the war and the literature it occasioned demand to be acknowledged. Novels, poems, and memoirs may be understood as engagements with and accounts of history as much as they may be understood as literary artifacts; the war and its culture have in turn generated an idiosyncratic poetics. It has conventionally been argued that the dawn of the war's modern literary scholarship and historiography can be traced back to the late 1960s and early 1970s—a period which the cultural historian Jay Winter has described as the “Vietnam Generation” of scholarship. -

Relationships to the Bush in Nan Chauncy’s Early Novels for Children SUSAN SHERIDAN AND EMMA MAGUIRE Flinders University The 1950s marked an unprecedented development in Australian children’s literature, with the emergence of many new writers—mainly women, like Nan Chauncy, Joan Phipson, Patricia Wrightson, Eleanor Spence and Mavis Thorpe Clark, as well as Colin Thiele and Ivan Southall. Bush and rural settings were strong favourites in their novels, which often took the form of a generic mix of adventure story and the bildungsroman novel of individual development. The bush provided child characters with unique challenges, which would foster independence and strength of character. While some of these writers drew on the earlier pastoral tradition of the Billabong books,1 others characterised human relationships to the land in terms of nature conservation. In the early novels of Chauncy and Wrightson, the children’s relationship to the bush is one of attachment and respect for the environment and its plants and creatures. Indeed these novelists, in depicting human relationships to the land, employ something approaching the strong Indigenous sense of ‘country’: of belonging to, and responsibility for, a particular environment. Later, both Wrightson and Chauncy turned their attention to Aboriginal presence, and the meanings which Aboriginal culture—and the bloody history of colonial race relations— gives to the land. In their earliest novels, what is strikingly original is the way both writers use bush settings to raise questions about conservation of the natural environment, questions which were about to become highly political. In Australia, the nature conservation movement had begun in the late nineteenth century, and resulted in the establishment of the first national parks. -

Move on, Move on! What it is to be Chinese in Australia today Chek Ling Abstract The Chinese are all right now. On the whole the mainstream population is quite relaxed about the Chinese presence in their midst. That of course was not the case for the 100 years to the end of WWII. And so it should come as no surprise that now and again old scars will resurface. Yet the Chinese have metamorphosed in the psyche of mainstream Australia: honorary whites like Li Cunxin, lionized professionals like Victor Chang, are neon-lit signs of this change. All the same, as a huayi (overseas Chinese) immigrant, my observations over the last 50 years have compelled me to conclude that there is one last gate for the present-day Chinese to walk through, and that it is time for the remaining rearguards of White Australia to consciously remove themselves from that gate. Lambing Flat has lain in my subconscious, ever since I first heard of it some forty years prior. At the time, I would have been hard at it, trying to make a life in Australia, as an engineer, a situation I did not enjoy, having studied engineering by accident and not finding it to my liking after the first week. I had flown into Melbourne, on a Colombo Plan scholarship, a week or two before the lectures started in 1962, from Sarawak, the soon to be abandoned British Colony. Sarawak had been the private fiefdom of three generations of the Brooke family of Great Britain, until the end of the Second World War. -

Wells to Octavia Butler by Rosalind Diaz Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Berkeley Professor Katherine Snyder, Chair This dissertation turns to alien invasion narratives to elucidate the social, ethical and political consequences associated with the modern body as an entity with clearly defined borders. The imperatives of liberalism and neoliberalism constitute the modern body as a white, male, heteronormative body, navigating appropriate relationships to production and consumption. How does the human body emerge as a bounded entity in science and science fiction from the nineteenth century onward? Alien invasion narratives offer a fruitful way to trace this concept and its development over time. These narratives model proper ways of attending to one’s body as well as proper ways of defending oneself—and, by extension, the planet—from alien invasion. The present inquiry focuses on three different alien invasion narratives, beginning with H. G. Wells’s influential The War of the Worlds (1897), before moving to consider a pair of twentieth- century American texts: Philip Kaufman’s film Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and Octavia Butler’s novel Fledgling (2005). -

Hörmedien von kommerziellen Produzenten, in Australien ist ABC Enterprises der größte, sind in der Regel gekürzte Versionen von Büchern. Bolinda Audio arbeitet kommerziell, veröffent- licht aber nur ungekürzte Versionen. Louis Braille Audio und VoyalEyes sind Abteilun- gen von Organisationen für Blinde, die Tonträger auch an Bibliotheken verkaufen und sie sind auch im Handel erhältlich. Grundsätzlich gelten öffentliche Bibliotheken als Hauptzielgruppe und ihnen werden spezielle Dienstleistungen von den Verlagen selbst oder dem Bibliothekszulieferer angeboten. Die britische und amerikanische Konkurrenz ist im Kindertonträgerbereich besonders groß. Aus diesem Grund spezialisieren sich australische Hörbuchverlage auf die Produktion von Büchern australischer Autoren und/ oder über Australien. Bei Kindern sind die Autoren John Marsden, Paul Jennings und Andy Griffiths sehr beliebt. Stig Wemyss, ein ausgebildeter Schauspieler, hat zahl- reiche Bücher bei verschiedenen Verlagen erfolgreich gelesen. Musik bzw. Lieder wer- den auf Hörbüchern nur vereinzelt verwendet. Es gibt aber einige Gruppen, z.B. die Wiggles, und Entertainer, z.B. Don Spencer, die Lieder für Kinder schreiben und auf- nehmen. Da der Markt für Kindertonträger in Australien noch im Aufbau ist, lohnt es sich, die Entwicklungen weiter zu verfolgen. -

We meet a 14 year old girl named Marina through her diary. Her face has been scarred by her father who attempted to throw acid onto Marina's mother, but missed and hit Marina instead. When she refuses to tell the truth about what happened to her, she finds herself institutionalized at Warrington, a boarding school for girls. But even at Warrington, she will not speak. Then one day, Mr. Lindell, Marina's new English teacher, asks the entire class to try keeping a journal. Marina resents the idea, but simply can't resist the allure of writing. She starts by telling obscure, minor details about her life, but eventually, she clarifies her story and gains the bravery to write about the terrible things that have happened to her. At the same time, she tells us through the diary that she's starting to open up to people, and she even has some friends, even though she can't muster the bravery to just speak to people. Eventually, she forgives her father, and tries to reunite with him again. She speaks her first words in the entire novel to her father: "Hello, Dad.
