The revised guidelines reflect the ever-expanding array of activities on offer in South Australian schools, preschools and the environment beyond and deal with numerous activities. They acknowledge the increasing recognition of the value of camps and excursions and related sporting and recreational activities in all areas of the curriculum, as described in the South Australian Curriculum Standards and Accountability framework. The revised guidelines also respond to the increasing need to ensure attention to occupational health, safety and welfare issues in all of our worksites, as required by the OHS&W Act 1986. For the purposes of that Act, worksites include schools, preschools and any other areas where educational activities take place. In that sense, a camp or excursion venue is considered to be an extension of the worksite. Emphasis is therefore given to important planning considerations impinging on the safe conduct of activities in regard to students/children, teachers and other participants. These include qualifications and experience of leaders, the nature of the student/child group, individual needs such as health care, local terrain and weather conditions, communication facilities and emergency action plans. The age of children is an important factor in planning for any camp or excursion activity. This publication has been written specifically for children who attend schools and preschools and is not intended to take the place of regulations or national standards in Family Day Care, Centre Based Childcare or Out of School Hours Care services. These guidelines were originally developed in consultation with many preschool, school, district and state office staff who provided valuable feedback and advice. The guidelines will assist principals, preschool directors and organisers of camps and excursions by providing a structure for planning the safe conduct of activities. This should support and strengthen existing provisions and practices that are in place in schools and preschools. Above all, the emphasis is to facilitate the planning and success of camps and excursions that offer interest, challenge and discovery to both supplement and extend upon day to day classroom and preschool experiences. I argue that, despite its historical connections to countercultural and subcultural expression, surfing has emerged as a cultural formation which, in multiple ways, contributes to and sustains dominant conceptions of national identity. This claim is demonstrated through the investigation of a diverse range of texts produced both within surf culture and outside it, including documentary and fictional cinema, novels, magazines and advertisements. Reading these texts for the politics of gender, race and class that inform them, I identify the crucial connections of surfing culture to the dominant discourses of white Australia, while also attending to the various manifestations of surfing masculinity that do not ‘fit in’ with contemporary national identity.

    SUBMISSION TO THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT BUDGET 2021/22 FROM: AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC COMMITTEE, AND COMMONWEALTH GAMES AUSTRALIA ON BEHALF OF THEIR MEMBER SPORTS Introduction The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA) welcome the opportunity to provide this Pre-Budget Submission (“the Submission”) ahead of the Federal Government’s 2021/22 Budget. In recognising the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, this Submission is measured and has been calibrated to focus on an immediate two-year period, appreciating the Government’s diverse priorities in leading the nation out of the pandemic and the associated economic challenges. Accordingly, the Submission seeks to ensure that the Sports are able to play their important role in the community, while at the same time successfully representing Australia on the international stage thereby inspiring and uniting the country. In the 2021/22 year, the Sports and their athletes will be representing Australia at the Tokyo Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games (July-August 2021), the Beijing Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games (February 2022) and the Birmingham Commonwealth Games (July- August 2022). The athletes will be training, qualifying and competing in the environment of the continuing COVID-19 health crisis. This requires significant ongoing logistical and financial commitments from the Sports, so their athletes are able to represent Australia at these Games. In parallel with the challenges of this extraordinary Games’ period, the Sports in 2021/22 are doubling down on their efforts to drive recovery in their businesses to support the development and growth of their clubs and grassroots. The Government should be assured that the Sports will continue to play their part in reconnecting our communities and getting our nation back on track, as they did during the bushfires in 2020 and during the early lock down phases of the COVID-19 pandemic.

For many of Australia’s athletes, their families and supporters, coaches and high performance ATHLETES staff, the next seven months leading into Tokyo 2020 represents the culmination of years of training, competing and dreaming. For everyday Australians, athletes in the green and gold on the international stage play a crucial role in motivating and inspiring us to get active and involved in physical activity. That’s why ‘achieving sporting excellence’ is a key priority of the Federal Government’s National Sport Plan, Sport 2030. Built around the pillars of participation, performance, integrity and industry, Sport 2030 is our clear and bold vision for sport in Australia — to ensure we are the world’s most active and healthy nation, known for our integrity and sporting success. Australia’s success on the international stage depends on a united and collaborative high performance sports system. Last month, I joined with Ministers of Sport from around the country to approve the historic National High Performance Sport Strategy 2024 (NHPSS). Approval of the NHPSS signals the first time all states and territories have agreed to an aligned high performance strategy and is recognition of a unified Australian system. With input from across sport led by the AIS, along with State and Territory Institutes and Academies of Sport, the NHPSS demonstrates the value of collaboration between the various governments of Australia to foster a shared approach to investment, responsibility and accountability.
