MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY Pram Shankar Prasad 1963 ~“- w IIUL 1.1 3 8 02 2832 )\ ‘II Lh" Us F' ABSTRACT STUDY ON FISH PARASITE OF LAKE MANITOU, MICHIGAN WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO INFESTATION OF SMALLMOUTH BASS BY THE BASS TAPEWORM, PROTEOCEPHALUS AMBLOPLITIS (LEIDY) by Prem Shankar Prasad This is a report of an investigation of the degree of infestation of smallmouth bass of Lake Manitou, Michigan, by the bass tapeworm, Proteocephalus amblgplitis, and the extent of host tissue damage. A sample of 42 fishes was examined in this study Which was represented by 36 small- mouth bass, five yellow perch, and one green sunfish. Al- together, nine different species of helminth parasites from the three phyla were recovered. The larval stage of the bass tapeworm (plerocercoids) were present in all the 42 fishes examined and were found to be most damaging. The extent of damage is greater in the females than in the males of the same age group. A study on larval lengths revealed that gonads, especially the ovaries, are better suited for the growth of these larvae. As the fish advance in age the larvae in the gonads also increase in length. The rate of growth of larvae is approximately three times greater in Prem Shankar Prasad the females than in the males. -

The four major types of helminths are flukes (trematodes), round worms (nematodes) tapeworms (Cestodes) and thorny worms (acanthoephala). The majority of helminths infect the digestive tract but some may be recorded in other organs such as trachea, eye or brain. In the present checklist helminths along with their bird hosts is being provided. Keywords: Checklist, Trematodes, Cestodes, Nematodes, Acanthocephala, Birds, Pakistan. INTRODUCTION Birds are most fascinating creatures and amongst one of the valuable gift of Almighty Allah. Studies on avian helminth parasites are important both from economic and zoonotic point of view. Comparatively less research has been conducted on parasites of birds in Pakistan. Information about avian helminth parasites in Pakistan is meager. Several species have been described and published in local and foreign journals. A comprehensive list is presented here of trematodes, nematodes, cestodes and acanthocephalan along with their hosts from different localities of Pakistan. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present information has been collected from published work in local and foreign journals. Classification for the species is presented based on original descriptions. The data was collected from University of Karachi, University of Sindh, Jamshoro and University of Punjab, Lahore. -

Introduction I AM DELIGHTED TO PRESENT TO YOU THE 2014 ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE AUSTRALIAN SOCIETY FOR PARASITOLOGY INC., WHICH HAS BEEN PREPARED BY OUR ASP NETWORK TEAM, LISA JONES, IAN HARRIS AND NICK SMITH. Parasitology research in Australia continues to flourish, with over 490 research papers published in 2014 and various, well-deserved honours bestowed on ASP Members, including the induction of three new Fellows of the ASP: Geoff McFadden; Tom Cribb; and Rob Adlard. However, funding for our research reached a low point for the last decade, with only 37 research grants or fellowships (worth $17 million) awarded to ASP members, versus 10-year averages of 60 grants (range: 37-87) and $34 million (range, $17-54 million). This reduced funding is being experienced across diverse disciplines and is, by no means, a reflection of any ASP President, Robin Gasser decline in quality or intensity of parasitological research in this country. Unfortunately, though, at this point there is no sign of a reversal of this disturbing trend in research funding patterns in Ryan O’Handley (SA Reps), Colin Stack (NSW rep.), Melanie Leef Australia, which seems to buck many international trends. Thus, (Tasmania rep.), Jutta Marfurt and Benedikt Ley (NT reps), Abdul international linkages forged by schemes like our own Researcher Jabbar (Victorian rep.), Mark Pearson (QLD rep.), Alan Lymbery Exchange, Training and Travel Awards, will become increasingly and Stephanie Godfrey (WA reps), Chris Peatey and Tina Skinner- important and critical. These endobacteria can also infect vertebrate hosts of the helminths and cause serious diseases in animals and humans. Neorickettsia have been isolated from infected animals and maintained in cell cultures, and their morphology in mammalian cells has been described. -

Dobrovolskij1,2 Abstract Background: The somatic musculature in trematode hermaphroditic generation (cercariae, metacercariae and adult) is presumed to comprise uniform layers of circular, longitudinal and diagonal muscle fibers of the body wall, and internal dorsoventral muscle fibers. Meanwhile, specific data are few, and there has been no analysis taking the trunk axial differentiation and regionalization into account. Yet presence of the ventral sucker (= acetabulum) morphologically divides the digenean trunk into two regions: preacetabular and postacetabular. The functional differentiation of these two regions is already evident in the nervous system organization, and the goal of our research was to investigate the somatic musculature from the same point of view. Results: Somatic musculature of ten trematode species was studied with use of fluorescent-labelled phalloidin and confocal microscopy. The body wall of examined species included three main muscle layers (of circular, longitudinal and diagonal fibers), and most of the species had them distinctly better developed in the preacetabuler region. In majority of the species several (up to seven) additional groups of muscle fibers were found within the body wall. Among them the anterioradial, posterioradial, anteriolateral muscle fibers, and U-shaped muscle sets were most abundant. These groups were located on the ventral surface, and associated with the ventral sucker. The additional internal musculature was quite diverse as well, and included up to twelve separate groups of muscle fibers or bundles in one species. -

Soon after beginning, however, it became apparent that, perhaps, a more important contribution might be made at this time through a survey of the trematodes found in ducks in Michigan. The obvious need for, and the excellent opportunity afforded at the W. K. Kellogg Bird Sanctuary for such a study, were instrumental in the change. Too, although Prosthogonimus is highly pathogenic in chickens, certain other trematodes seemed to be of more importance in ducks.
