    Steve Earle Townes Biography Steve Earle had two reasons for coming out with this long-planned tribute to Townes Van Zandt now. The first reason is practical. Earle is currently pushing himself to finish a years-in-the-making novel, and he wants to see it in print before the publishing business goes belly up. The second is a more personal concern. Like all artists worthy of the name, Steve Earle loves the truth, and in the case of Van Zandt, he sees that the waters are muddying before his eyes. Very often over periods of years, the truth first becomes myth and myth later becomes truth. In regards to his teacher, hero and friend Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle was not about to let that happen. “I’m very thankful that when I got out of jail I started meeting people like Jay Farrar and other people his age that knew Townes chapter and verse,” he says. “I’ve always been very thankful for that. But a lot of what powered that is a take on roots music that comes from alternative music, and the crowd that kind of attached itself to Townes was the same kind of people that have White Light / White Heat in the front of their record collection so everybody knows how intense they are when they have a party.     Club 47 ® Club 47 ® Honoring the past, Celebrating the future The Club 47 concert series, across the years and around the country, has been a club house for stars of the acoustic music world and a springboard for emerging talent. Most of all, it’s been an extraordinary musical experience for millions of fans of all ages, in concert halls and on radio and television. Here’s how it began. The Club 47 once was a coffee house in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Although it was only open ten years (January, 1958 to April, 1968) and seated only about 80 people, it became the flagship of the Boston area’s coffee house armada and one of the centers of the 1960s folk music revival. It hosted many of the heroes of traditional music: Appalachian dulcimer players, Cowboy singers and storytellers, Delta blues men and women, gospel groups, Celtic artists, jug bands, bluegrass bands... legendary artists from around the globe. You could also hear new voices at the Club 47 ... the young Joan Baez trying out a Child ballad for the first time, or that new kid, Bob Dylan, up from New York, testing the crowd’s reaction to some new lyrics set to an old melody. Judy Collins, Richie Havens, Van Morrison, Eric Anderson, Tom Paxton, John Hammond, Tom Rush and a host of others came to that tiny room, and learned. They learned how to listen, sitting at the feet of giants. They learned songs, and how to sing and play them. While Austin enjoys international acclaim for its live music scene, Houston has long had one of the richest and most diverse musical histories of any city in Texas. Although not always adequately recognized for its contributions to the state’s songwriting traditions, Houston had a thriving folk music scene from the 1960s to the 1980s, helping launch the careers of numerous singer-songwriters. Founded in January 2016, the Houston Folk Music 47 Archive at the Woodson Research Center, which is part of Rice University’s Fondren Library, seeks to preserve and celebrate Houston’s folk music history, including its artists, venue owners, promoters, producers, and others. During the process of digitizing 2-track radio reels from Rice University’s student-run radio station, KTRU, I discovered a large number of folk music recordings, including live shows, interviews, and in-studio performances. Among these were such radio programs as Arbuckle Flat and Chicken Skin Music, which feature interviews and performances by Eric Taylor, Nanci Griffith, Lucinda Williams, Vince Bell, and others. The musicians tell stories about how they ended up in Houston and became part of the thriving folk community centered in the Montrose neighborhood. Not having grown up in the area, I was unaware that the local scene was so vibrant that several artists, including Lucinda Williams, had left Austin to join Houston’s tight-knit folk community.

Bill’s songs can be summed up as covering a wide base, with much of his writing style influenced by the song writing styles of the likes of Harry Chapin, James Taylor and Dan Fogelberg. His songs are written about real people living in real situations, many are true stories, always with his unique spin on things. Bill has been a musician all his life (40+ years playing and teaching guitar) and his guitar style is well refined with a bent towards finger picking and a voice that will make the listener want to hear more and more. Bill also has lived with multiple sclerosis for the last 25 years, which has caused him to find unique ways of approaching the art of playing the guitar, using altered tunings and multiple capos to facilitate using fewer fingers while playing (he will describe some of this at the show). He teaches a course in this method at song schools around the country, working with people who have lost fingers, nerve damage and other maladies.
