The cells are physically situated such that a mobile device will stay connected to the network seamlessly as it moves from cell to cell. So, the communication path is from the sending mobile device, to an antenna situated in the nearest base station, to the network, to an antenna in the base station closest to the receiving mobile device, and then to the receiving mobile device. To allow for the largest possible cell size, antennas are installed in high places to provide for the strongest possible signals over the cell. These places are commonly atop individual stand-alone towers, in bell towers, atop telephone/utility poles, or the tops of tall buildings. Base stations are connected to each other and to the primary network via cables. When cable connections between towers are not practical, such as in rural areas, line-of-sight microwave radio transmission is used. This study proposes a design of a flying humanoid robot named Jet-HR2 (Fig. 1). The robot has 10 joints driven by brushless motors and harmonic drives for locomotion. To overcome the challenge of the stable-attitude takeoff in small thrust-to-weight conditions, the robot was designed based on the concept of thrust vectoring. The propulsion system consists of four ducted fans, that is, two fixed on the waist of the robot and the other two mounted on the feet for thrust vector control. The thrust vector is controlled by adjusting the attitude of the foot during the flight. A simplified model and control strategies are proposed to solve the problem of attitude instability caused by mass errors and joint position errors during takeoff. The experimental results showed that the robot’s spin and dive behaviors during takeoff were effectively suppressed by controlling the thrust vector of the ducted fan on the foot. The robot successfully achieved takeoff at a thrust- to-weight ratio of 1.17 (17 kg / 20 kg) and maintained a stable attitude, reaching a takeoff height of over 1000 mm. I.     AD41700 Robots, Art and Culture Prof. Fabian Winkler (AD/ETB) in collaboration with Prof. Justin Seipel (ME) Fall 2015 AD41700: Robots, Art and Culture (Variable Topics in Electronic and Time-Based Art) The history of robots has always been closely connected not only to technological but also cultural and social issues. From early Renaissance automatons to contemporary entertainment, industry and military robots, the field of robotics is developing rapidly, and while robots have become increasingly ubiquitous in everyday life, they have also become important reflections of our own culture. We will investigate ideas and concepts central to the field of robotics as starting points for artistic interventions. Specifically, speculations about the future of the field - based on the knowledge of its past - will provide a rich source of ideas for the creation of new work. We will explore issues at the intersection of culture and robots including the historical development of robots and their representation in fiction, concepts of robots in Asia and the West, bio-inspired robot locomotion and speculations on the future development of robots. Technical workshops in this course will focus on the creative application of robotic technologies (sensors, actuators, microcontrollers) with Arduino - however students will also have the opportunity to work on class projects investigating robots using a variety of media (video, film, sound, text, interactivity, etc.). Special highlights for this semester’s Robots, Art and Culture class will be a particularly interdisciplinary approach to the course topics through a collaboration with Prof. Justin Seipel (Purdue Mechanical Engineering), an exhibition of speculative robot artifacts as part of Purdue’s Dawn or Doom 2 summit and residency activities and exchanges with visiting artist Huang Yi/KUKA (through Purdue Convocations).
