The Newsletter of the Iroquoia Club Summer 2012 Vol. 47 No. 3

The Iroquoianwww.iroquoia.on.ca 2012 annual meeting highlights The annual meeting of the Iroquoia Bruce Club for the year 2011 – 12 was held April 14 at the Canterbury Hills church camp in Dundas Valley. Almost 70 members attended. The business meeting was preceded by a short and a medium hike, followed by a lunch. Treasurer Martin Hazelden reported that the Club was in a good financial position. Other club direc- tors provided details on club activities throughout the year. Following the election of the board of directors for the year 2012 – 13, the directors appointed these individuals to the following positions:

President: Cathie Mills Vice President: Gary Wrathall Secretary: Charlotte Stewart Treasurer: Martin Hazelden Bruce Trail Conservancy board representative: Paul Toffoletti Trail Director: Ken Lawday Landowner Relations Director: John Farquharson Hike Management Director: Anne Armstrong Volunteer Director: Ron Simpkin Land Stewardship Director: Gary Beaudoin Publicity & Public Education Director: Margaret Lee Events Support Director: Don Corrigian

A number of awards for volunteer service to the Club were presented, including the annual Trail Worker of the Year award to Paul McClenachen. The Club also presented a gift to Patti & Jim Blair, owners of the popular outdoors store in Burlington called Tumblehome, who have been generous finan- cial supporters of the Bruce Trail and the Iroquoia Club for many years. Patti and Jim have retired from the retail business, and the store closed in March. But they attended the meeting to present the Club with a donation for more than $ 1,800. We wish them well in their retirement.

    page 6 iroquoia bruce trail club A 50 kilometre trail challenge Imagine this

50 hikers -- following the blazes of the Bruce Trail — for 50 kilometres — in the same day!

What is it?

It’s the 50 KM Trailblazers Challenge — a fundraising event of the Bruce Trail Conservancy to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the first ‘Bruce Trail’ hike. It takes place in the Caledon Hills and Dufferin Highlands sections of the Bruce Trail on Saturday, June 24th.

It won’t be easy!

Hikers will meet in the Mono Cliffs Provincial Park in the Dufferin section of the Trail for a pre-hike rally, then take a bus south to a spot in the Caledon section to start the hike. Along the northward hike they can take advantage of refreshment stations, and if they reach the end, a post-hike feast & celebration. Because it’s a fundraiser, all hike participants are required to pre-register, and have a minimum of $ 500 in pledges to support them. The funds raised will go to the BTC goal to secure, steward and make available to the public an addition- al 5,000 acres of Niagara Escarpment landscape.

Here’s how you can help

Two members of the Iroquoia Club – veteran end-to-enders Fiona Nisbett and Dan Welch — are the official club participants in the 50 km challenge. Anyone who knows them will know they can hike the entire distance. You can make or pledge donation to either Fiona or Dan in one of two ways:

• Dan Welsh’s fundraising page: www.gifttool.com/athon/MyFundraisingPage?ID=2035&AID=2004&PID=272714 • Fiona Nisbets’s fundraising page: www.gifttool.com/athon/MyFundraisingPage?ID=2035&AID=2004&PID=272723 • Call our Club’s vice-president Gary Wrathall at 905-681-6167 (Burlington) or e-mail him at gary.wrathall@ sympatico.ca to make a donation. Those making an eligible pledge donation will be issued a tax receipt. Iroquoia bruce trail club page 7 Grindstone Creek

One of the most pleasant walks of the Iroquoia sec- tion is crossing the Grindstone Valley, from Snake Road to Smokey Hollow, south of Waterdown. The 3.4 km trail is considered to be 87% secured, as the properties being crossed are subject to an ease- ment or owned by the BTC or Conservation Halton. This significant achievement is thanks to the efforts of volunteers such as Eric Best and Paul Toffoletti, and staff members Antoin Diamond and Scott Lang- ley, among others. We continue to be in touch with the remaining land- owners, and look forward to the day when the entire valley is secured.
