T H E VA L U E OF LIF E

Living in a country which is widely perceived to be the m ost civilized nation in the world, we as a people too often take for granted the gua- rantee of a tomorro w. Those w ho kno w me —and have shared in m y experience —can surely understand w hy I, more than ever, have a ne w appreciation for being granted by the Almighty the right to continue in the task with w hich I have been charged. W hatever the challenge, let the industry and the world kno w that B RE Conference '88 will go on record as our most infor mative, exciting and successful conference ever. But our success will be measured by our diligent attention to detail in solving the proble ms of the past— and our quest to build upon hard- w on experience of m ore than a decade in providing the networking opportunities through which indus- try careers have been built and enhanced. After all, solving proble ms is what life is all about, isn't it? STRONGER THAN EVER.

Teddy Riley hits the Urban teens where it counts, and with mainstream/ underground crossover acts Keith Sweat and Kool Moe Dee under his belt, R&B's successful "new school" producer is ready for more! Guy gives America a slice of reality, a street beat that relates to real life, instead of the overprocessed studio sound that has become as alienating as it is tiresome. E.U., Keith Sweat, and now Guy are putting the groove back in R&B and all we can say is ..."Groove Me"!

TEDDYPENDERGRA OF THE WEEK TEDDY PENDERGRASS JOY ELEKTRA Teddy's triumphant return is truly a "joyful" occasion for Black Radio programmers, the title cut is rac ng up BRE's singles chart with heavy adds in all markets. Splitting production duties on the long awaited release are Reggie and Vincent Calloway, who are responsible for the current chart buster, and Miles Jaye, studio architect of the unbelievably romantic sounding down- tempo groover "2 A.M." Other super strong selections include "Love Is The Power" and "This Is The Last Time."

6 BLACK RADIO EXCLUSIVE May 13, 1988 BRE MUSIC REPORT IMPORTANT RECORDS

SINGLES

KEITH PATRICK—HEAVEN —ATLANTIC—This is the second release from Patrick's self-titled debut album. Oftering a smooth, down tempo ballad, the rising young star comes across well with a clear, sensitive style that sometimes parallels Howard Hewett's seductive approach.

MAC BAND FEATURING THE McCAMPBELL BROTHERS—ROSES ARE RED — MCA—Things are definitely smelling rosy for funk/dance crew the Mac Band as they pile up adds on our reporting stations. Production team L.A. and Babyface throw down another winner, with some help from re-mix master Louil Silas, Jr.

THE ZAWINUL SYNDICATE—NO MERCY FOR ME (MERCY, MERCY, ME RCY)—COLUMBIA—Zawinul reaches way back to his pre-Miles Davis days that he spent with alto sax master "Cannonball" Adderly. Re-vamped and funked up, the keyboardist/ throws down a beautifully arranged and stunningly soulful version of "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy," a song that was certainly a "hit" in Jazz terms when first released. A killer cut!

.I 1;11J ITJ

TAMARA AND THE SEEN —BLUEBERRY GOSSIP—A&M —Reaping the fruits of the funky fresh hit "Blueberry Gossip," Tamara hits back with plenty of juice from her first collection in two years. "Excite My Life" is another up-tempo radio pick, while "True Ecstasy" shows off T's vocals in the ballad setting. 'Tuff Girl" is a blazing funker for the dance floors and airwaves.

THE REDDINGS—THE REDDINGS—POLYDOR—The Redding siblings developed an impeccable sense of soul from dad Otis, and teamed with producer Robert Brookins, the trio offers some seriously solid R&B. "So In Love With You" and the danceable "R.O.C.C." are two Brookins efforts, and "Jealous Heart" was produced by the group itself.

NARADA—DIVINE EMOTION —REPRISE— Walden's first release from this latest LP is the title track "Divine Emotion." Doing it all from production to performance, the Fusion/Jazz drummer makes the most of his background and experience. Check out the ballad 'That's The Way I Feel About Cha."

Joyce Sims Wows The UK Joyce Sims, Sleeping Bag Records recording artist, has just triumphantly completed a tour in the United Kingdom and Amsterdam, where she sold out every venue she played, including two nights at the world famous Hammersmith Odeon in London. Strongly contributing to Ms. Sims' performances was the Joyce Sims Band; guest appearing with the band as the multi-talented Jimmy Castor. As one newspaper critic raved, "Joyce Sims is the Voice of the '90s, classically 'post-modern' with a skill and vocal range that leave more humble warblers gasping. The marriage between Ms. Sims and her illustrious band is truly a match made in heaven." Presently, Sims is rapidly approaching star status in the music industry. A woman who wrote, arranged, performed and produced her debut LP Come Into My Life, she has already earned a gold LP in the UK. Sims is now looking for a fifth hit single from the LP in the Barbara Acklin remake of "Love Makes A Woman," featuring Joyce Sims Jimmy Castor on saxophone.
