SIMON, TSONGA SEEK 3RD METZ TITLE; 3 FRENCHMEN IN DOUBLES FINAL

 DAY 7 PREVIEW: A Frenchman will win the Moselle Open singles and doubles titles on Sunday as five of France’s best players put friendships aside on Court Central. No. 2 seed and No. 3 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, both 30 years old, meet for the 10th time on tour and second time in a Metz final. Simon defeated Tsonga for the 2013 Moselle Open title and has swept 12 straight matches and 19 straight sets in Metz over his last three appearances (2010 Champion, 2013 Champion, 2015 Finalist). Tsonga won the Metz title twice in Simon’s absence (2011 and 2012).

Simon vs. Tsonga is the third final of the season between countrymen after Simon defeated Gael Monfils at and beat fellow American at Houston. No matter who wins, a Frenchman is assured a sixth ATP title this season. Only Spaniards, Serbians and Swiss have won more (all with eight). The Metz doubles final features the Top 2 seeds as US Open champions Pierre-Hugues Herbert and put their nine-match win streak on the line against the first-time team of Lukasz Kubot of Poland and Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France.

 FRENCHMEN IN A RACE: The winner of Sunday’s championship match receives 250 Emirates ATP ranking points, which are valuable to both Gilles Simon and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Emirates ATP Race to London. Only the Top 8 singles players gain a berth into the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals Nov. 15-22, and Simon and Tsonga are No. 14 and No. 15 respectively. The Moselle Open champion receives 250 ranking points and the runner-up receives 150. With competing in the St. Petersburg Open final on Sunday, it’s important for Simon and Tsonga to keep pace with the 24-year-old Canadian when the race standings are updated on Monday.
