MTV Marketing Chief Tina Exharos to Depart MTV Marketing Chief Tina Exharos to Depart 10.15.2015 After 28 years at MTV, marketing chief Tina Exarhos is departing the company in the wake of Sean Atkins becoming president last month. Joe Ortiz, currently senior VP of strategy and creative at MTV On-Air Promotions, will succeed her. The move comes after there have been several changes at the top of MTV. Besides Stephen Friedman leaving and Atkins coming in, head of programming Susanne Daniels also left in July and joined YouTube. That said, Exharos appears to have been discussing leaving the network for several months, something to which Doug Herzog, president of Viacom Music and Entertainment Group, refers to in his full memo below. Exharos oversaw all marketing and creative development for MTV. She joined the network as a member of its press department in 1986. Here is Herzog's memo in full: "After 28 years with MTV, my good friend Tina Exarhos will be leaving the company at the end of the year. Tina and I have talked about it a lot over the past few months and, with new leadership coming in, she sees a great opportunity to pass the baton, move on from the brand she helped build, and pursue a new adventure that we will be hearing about shortly. Over the next few months, Tina will work with Sean Atkins on a transition plan, and will hand off leadership of the Marketing team to Joe Ortiz. As many of you know, Tina and I go way back. We were colleagues at MTV when we were babies, and we've been friends for just as long. It all came full circle when I landed back in the MTV universe earlier this year. I sat down with Tina and her team and they took me through some of their recent work. I was impressed - it was sophisticated, creative, and, more than anything, very MTV. That's the story of Tina's career. Through every change in culture and our audience, Tina has always stayed a step ahead, evolving her own skills, the department and its work to keep the MTV brand relevant. With the Millennials at MTV's doorstep, she spearheaded a bold redesign of the MTV logo in 2010 that put the audiences' faces at the center of the brand. When the network made the decision to double down on scripted, she directed provocative campaigns for series like "Teen Wolf," "Finding Carter," and "Scream." When social transformed how we engaged audiences, she championed 365-day marketing strategies to keep audiences hooked between seasons. Over the years, her team's campaigns have delivered viewers to some of MTV's most famous and infamous moments at the VMAs and Movie Awards. Their creative has elevated so many of the brand's award-winning pro-social campaigns, from "A Thin Line" to "Look Different." Look at any of MTV's historic launches - from "The Real World" to "Yo! MTV Raps," "Beavis & Butt-head" to "Jackass," to "Jersey Shore," to one of her greatest passions - "Choose or Lose" - and you'll find Tina's name in the credits. That's a hall of fame resume. But, behind the list of accomplishments and accolades, there's the Tina that I and many of you know - funny, warm, full of integrity and passion about great people and creative, lover of great ideas and great music. It's no surprise that she leaves us with an excellent team that won't miss a beat. Her love for this brand and its people are a big reason why she's been one of its driving creative forces. Please join me in thanking Tina for everything she's given to MTV, and wishing her the very best of luck." Read more at Deadline, The Wrap Image courtesy of The Wrap.

February 26, 2021 Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer, Alabama are voting to form a union with the Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union (RWDSU). We are the writers of feature films and television series. All of our work is done under union contracts whether it appears on Amazon Prime, a different streaming service, or a television network. Unions protect workers with essential rights and benefits. Most importantly, a union gives employees a seat at the table to negotiate fair pay, scheduling and more workplace policies. Deadline Amazon accepts unions for entertainment workers, and we believe warehouse workers deserve the same respect in the workplace. We strongly urge all Amazon warehouse workers in Bessemer to VOTE UNION YES. THE INNOCENT VILLAIN: INVOLUNTARY MANSLAUGHTER BY TEXT Charles Adside III* Michelle Carter’s texts instructing her mentally ill online boyfriend to commit suicide offended the social moral code. But the law does not categorize all morally reprehensible behavior as criminal. Commonwealth v. Carter is unprecedented in manslaughter law because Carter was convicted on the theory that she was virtually present as opposed to physically present—at the crime scene. The court’s reasoning is expansive, as the framework it employs is excessively vague and does not provide fair notice to the public of which actions constitute involuntary manslaughter. Disturbingly, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court affirmed the trial court’s logic. This Article concludes that a conviction based upon a virtual-presence theory is unconstitutional, as it is void-for-vagueness.

  • SCMS 2019 Conference Program
CELEBRATING SIXTY YEARS SCMS 1959-2019 SCMSCONFERENCE 2019PROGRAM Sheraton Grand Seattle MARCH 13–17 Letter from the President Dear 2019 Conference Attendees, This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies. Formed in 1959, the first national meeting of what was then called the Society of Cinematologists was held at the New York University Faculty Club in April 1960. The two-day national meeting consisted of a business meeting where they discussed their hope to have a journal; a panel on sources, with a discussion of “off-beat films” and the problem of renters returning mutilated copies of Battleship Potemkin; and a luncheon, including Erwin Panofsky, Parker Tyler, Dwight MacDonald and Siegfried Kracauer among the 29 people present. What a start! The Society has grown tremendously since that first meeting. We changed our name to the Society for Cinema Studies in 1969, and then added Media to become SCMS in 2002. From 29 people at the first meeting, we now have approximately 3000 members in 38 nations. The conference has 423 panels, roundtables and workshops and 23 seminars across five-days. In 1960, total expenses for the society were listed as $71.32. Now, they are over $800,000 annually. And our journal, first established in 1961, then renamed Cinema Journal in 1966, was renamed again in October 2018 to become JCMS: The Journal of Cinema and Media Studies. This conference shows the range and breadth of what is now considered “cinematology,” with panels and awards on diverse topics that encompass game studies, podcasts, animation, reality TV, sports media, contemporary film, and early cinema; and approaches that include affect studies, eco-criticism, archival research, critical race studies, and queer theory, among others.
