A Beginner’s Guide to Getting in Shape

This might be the first, tenth, or fiftieth time you’ve tried to lose weight and get healthy. Sure things didn’t work the last time, or the time before that, or even the time before that…”but things are going to be different THIS time,” right? The answer is right—here are a few tips!  Identify your kryptonite—if you tried to get in shape in the past and failed, it’s important to know WHY. Educate yourself on the hurdles and kryptonite that made you fail, and work on either avoiding those pitfalls or develop methods to deal with them.  Clean up your diet—believe it or not, 80% of your success when it comes to getting healthy will depend on your diet—unless you are running marathons on a daily basis, you cannot outrun your fork, and you can’t out-train a bad diet. Most people fail at eating better because they try to make TOO many changes at once, their stomach freaks out and they run back to their comfort foods. Pick a food change every few weeks, and stick with it. Whether it’s eating less calories per day, drinking one less soda, eating more vegetables or cooking your own meal once a week...small changes can lead to big successes in the long run.  Find an activity that makes you happy, and do it all the time—Maybe you like yoga, or dodgeball, or Ultimate Frisbee, or rock climbing, or whatever! DO IT!  We’re genetically designed to BE ACTIVE—If you don’t like to move, then it’s time to try new things until you find something that you DO like. Sign up for a new class, join your company’s running club for a day, try out something in your living room, just keep trying new stuff until you find something that you like. And then do it as often as you can. Exercising regularly will help you build muscle, strengthen your heart, lose wright, increase your endurance, stamina, and / or flexibility. On top of that, regular exercise keeps your mind thinking healthy, which in turn will keep your stomach thinking healthy, which will cause your mouth to continue eating healthy foods.  Put it all together: These are the steps you can take today:  Determine your goals or habits you want to establish. Write them down and hang them up.  Determine why you failed in the past and how you can avoid it in the future.  Start cleaning up your diet in whatever method works best for you.  Pick an activity that makes you happy, and do it. A Lot. V OLUME 1 , I SSUE 3 P AGE 5

Twenty Dollars

A well known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a $20 bill. In the room of 200, he asked. “Who would like this $20 bill?”

Hands started going up. He said, “I am going to give this $20 to one of you - but first, let me do this.”

He proceeded to crumple the 20 dollar note up. He then asked, “Who still wants it?” Still the hands were up in the air.

“Well,” he replied, “what if I do this?” He dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe. He picked it up, now crumpled and dirty. “Now, who still wants it?”

Still the hands went into the air.

“My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth $20.

Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled, and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way. We feel as though we are worthless; but no matter what happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value.

Dirty or clean, crumpled or finely creased, you are still priceless to those who love you. The worth of our lives comes, not in what we do or who we know, but by...WHO WE ARE.

YOU ARE SPECIAL—DON’T EVER FORGET IT.”

God the Holy Spirit

“For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.” Ephesians 2:18

In our communion with God in the inner chamber, we must guard against the danger of seeking to know God and Christ in the power of the intellect or the emotions. The Holy Spirit has been given for the sole purpose that “through Him we...have access by one Spirit unto the Father.” Let us beware, lest all our labor be in vain because we do not wait for the teaching of the Spirit.

Christ taught His disciples this truth on His last night. Speaking of the coming of the Comforter, He said, “In that day ye shall ask...the Father in my name...Ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full” (John 16:23-24). Take hold of the truth that the Holy Spirit was given with the one great purpose of teaching us to pray. He makes fellowship with the Father and the Son a blessed reality. Be strong in the faith that He is working secretly in you. As you enter the inner chamber, give yourself wholly to His guidance as your Teacher in all your intercession and adoration.

When Christ said to the disciples on the evening of the Resurrection, “Receive ye the Holy Ghost” (John 20:22), it was, for one thing, to strengthen and equip them for the ten days of prayer and for their receiving the fullness of the Spirit. This suggests to us three things we ought to remember when we draw near to God in prayer: 1. WE MUST PRAY IN THE CONFIDENCE THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT DWELLS IN US. And we must yield ourselves definitely, in stillness of soul, to His leading. Take time for this. 2. WE MUST BELIEVE THAT THE “GREATER WORKS” (JOHN 5:20) OF THE SPIRIT WILL BE GIVEN IN ANSWER TO PRAYER. Such “works” bring us toward the enlightening and strengthening of the spiritual life, toward the fullness of the Spirit. 3. WE MUST BELIEVE THAT THROUGH THE SPIRIT, IN UNITY WITH ALL GOD’S CHILDREN, WE MAY ASK AND EXPECT THE MIGHTY WORKINGS OF THAT SPIRIT ON HIS CHURCH AND PEOPLE.

“He that believeth on Me, as the scripture hath said, out of His belly shall flow rivers of living water” (John 7:38). “Believest thou this?” (John 11:26) P AGE 8 T HE Z ION T RUMPET

At the age of four her family moved to California, where she received her first dance training at a Catholic Community Center. Ms. Collins studied primarily with , Lester Horton, and Adolph Bolm, who were among the few ballet teachers who accepted black students. A Few Financial Basics

1. Draft a financial vision board. You need motivation to start adopting better money habits, and if you craft a vision board, it can help remind you to stay on track with your financial goals. A vision board is a poster or bulleting board you fill with images and words that illus- trate your ideal life. 2. Set specific financial goals. Use numbers and dates, not just words, to describe what you want to accomplish with your money. How much debt do you want to pay off—and when? How much do you want to save, and by what date? It’s a method that has helped individuals to pay down $40,000 of debt. 3. Adopt a spending mantra. Pick out a positive phrase that acts like a mini rule of thumb for how you spend. For example, ask yourself, “is this [fill in purchase here] better than Bali next year?” or “I only charge items that are $30 or more.” 4. Love yourself. Sure, it may sound corny, but it works. 5. Make bite-size money goals. One study showed that the farther away a goal seems, and the less sure we about when it will happen, the more likely we are to give up. So in addition to focusing on big goals (say, buying a home), aim to also set smaller, short-term goals along the way that will reap quicker results-like saving some money each week in order to take a trip in six months. 6. Banish toxic money thoughts. Hello, self-fulfilling prophecy! If you psych yourself out be- fore you even get started (“I’ll never pay off debt!), then you’re setting yourself up to fail. 7. Get your finances—and body-in shape. One study showed that more exercise leads to higher pay because you tend to be more productive after you’ve worked up a sweat. Plus, all the habits and discipline associated with, say, running marathons are also associated with managing your money well. 8. Learn how to savor. Savoring means appreciating what you have now, instead of trying to get happy by acquiring more things. 9. Get a money buddy. According to one study, friends with similar traits can pick up good habits from each other—and it applies to your money too! So try gathering several friends for regular money lunches, like one woman did, paying off $35,00 of debt in the process.

Please Support the Owners of these Businesses who are our Members. Give us your card so we can advertise for you.
