23 Geoffrey Holder and Carmen de Lavallade papers, circa 1900-2018 Manuscript Collection No. 1432 Series 2 Photographs, 1900-2017 Boxes 60 - 118

Scope and Content Note This series consists of photographs from Geoffrey Holder and Carmen de Lavallade's professional and personal lives circa 1900-2017, including photographs of family, friends, rehearsals, and performances, as well as other events such as lectures, awards ceremonies, and weddings. Photographs of Holder's family and friends include documentation of celebratory and casual gatherings, as well as portraits, with early photographs (1930-1952) depicting life in Port-of- Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. Lifelong collaborators, such as Scoogie Brown and Jacques Sigurd; childhood friends, such as Tommy Carr; parents, Louise and Arthur Holder; sisters, Jean and Marjorie; brother Boscoe Holder; and others are well-represented in the series. Early Holder dance company photographs depict events, rehearsals, and portraits of dancers, including performances and gatherings at the Caribe Hilton Hotel (Puerto Rico). Some include captions, such as names of performers, written on the back. There are several portraits of performers and models taken by Holder circa 1940-1952. Some, such as Tropical Rhapsody, depict mythological scenes and include story-like descriptions written on the back. Later nude portraits by Holder were included in Holder's book Adam (1986). Holder's music and dance events, lectures, and interviews, including performances of Instant Theater (circa 1970s) are included in this series. Performances Holder choreographed and/or directed, such as Danse Creole (Ballet Hispánico, undated), Dougla (, 1974), Timbuktu (1979), The Wiz (circa 1975-1979), Ballet, Ballads, the Blues and the Bible (circa 1982), Prodigal Prince (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, circa 1958-2010), and instances of Banda (circa 1940s-1982) throughout Holder's career, are well-represented. Holder's costume designs can be seen in these works, as well as in Dance Theatre of Harlem's Firebird (circa 1982). Some of his designs are modeled throughout this series by de Lavallade, Léo Holder, and other models. There are several promotional photographs, behind-the-scenes images, set stills, and captions from film and television productions in which Holder acted. There are several photographs of Holder's and drawings, as well as of people who modeled for Holder's (sitters). Notable sitters were Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll, and Anthony Perkins. There are photographs of some of Holder's art exhibitions, including his first exhibition in New York at Barone Gallery and early exhibitions documented by Betty Statler. Early photographs of Carmen de Lavallade's family include her father, Leo de Lavallade; mother, Grace Grenot de Lavallade; aunts, Angelique Bratton and Adele de Lavallade; cousin Janet Collins; sisters, Yvonne and Elaine de Lavallade; and others. Several photographs include Holder and de Lavallade's family at events and gatherings together, including some of de Lavallade, Jean and Marjorie on a beach. De Lavallade's work as a dancer, choreographer, and actor is seen in candid photographs backstage, rehearsals, workshops with children, and performances. Early (circa 1950s) performances with Lester Horton such as Salome, Another Touch of Klee, Choreo '54 and The Beloved are well-documented. Her work with John Butler including performances of Cartulli

Carmina (1967) and Portrait of Billie (circa 1960s-1992), as well as rehearsals, performances, and parties with the Butler dance company in Spoleto, depict de Lavallade's relationships with other dancers, artists, and friends. There are several negatives, prints, and slides of the de-Lavallade-Ailey American Dance Company on tour through Southeast Asia (1962) and some instances of de Lavallade and Alvin Ailey performing in Roots of the Blues (circa 1960s) and House of Flowers (1954). Yale Repertory Theater performances (circa 1960-1977) include A Midsummer Night's Dream (1975). There are some portraits of de Lavallade's solo work As I Remember It (circa 2007), as well as other lesser-known solo performances throughout her career. There are also photographs of her teaching engagements, seminars, and workshops, including events attended by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater artistic director emerita, Judith Jamison. Photographs of Holder and de Lavallade together include rehearsals and performances with Josephine Baker and in House of Flowers (1954). They are pictured together at awards ceremonies and other formal events, dinners, and parties, such as the (Washington, D.C.) and "Night of 100 Stars" (circa 1982-1985), where Holder took several portraits of notable figures and celebrities. Their 1955 wedding is also prominently featured with photographs by recurring collaborators Carl Van Vechten, Peter Basch, and Peter Fink. Many portraits of Holder, de Lavallade, and Léo at their New York home were taken by photographers Margot W. Astrachan, M.J. Dain, and others whose work occurs several times in this series.

80 Geoffrey Holder and Carmen de Lavallade papers, circa 1900-2018 Manuscript Collection No. 1432 Subseries 6.2 Scripts, 1953-2010 Boxes 39 - 58

Scope and Content Note This subseries consists of scripts and related documents dating from 1953-2010. It includes scripts, teleplays, and screenplays for television shows, films, theatrical plays and musicals, video games, advertisements, and ceremonies. Synopses, treatments, outlines, and proposals often appear in addition to, or instead of, complete scripts. Related correspondence, production materials, and research materials accompany some scripts. Production materials include call sheets, production and rehearsal schedules, cast lists, audition materials, programs, and notes. Some scripts contain hand-written annotations. Geoffrey Holder authored many scripts and related writings in this subseries. The Odyssey of Anna and Her Red Pumps (circa 1991) and Sister Alice in Wonderland (circa 1998-2001) appear in multiple drafts and distinct versions and are arranged with artist notes that illuminate Holder’s creative process. Artist notes are also present for Holder’s Willie Sings the Blues (circa 1990). This subseries also contains the screenplay Mr. Orpheus Black (2005), a romantic tragedy set in New Orleans, Louisiana, and based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice; and Les Mysteres, an undated treatment by Holder involving several Loas including Baron Samedi. Other synopses and verses written by Holder, or attributed to Holder, have been retained in this subseries. A considerable number of productions for which Holder performed, directed, choreographed, or designed costumes appear in this subseries. Notable examples of roles performed by Holder include: "Punjab" in Annie (1981), "Nelson" in Boomerang (1992), " X" in Doctor Dolittle (1966), "Johnson" in Ghost of a Chance (1987), "Baron Samedi" in Live and Let Die (1972), "Cudjo" in Swashbuckler (1975), and "Calypso Man/Singer" in "The Bottle Imp" (1957). The subseries contains significant materials related to Harold Arlen and Truman Capote’s House of Flowers (circa 1954 and 1968) in which Holder performed the roles of "The Champion" and "Baron of the Cemetery" (Baron Samedi) and choreographed the Banda dance. Also present are materials related to Phantom of the Opera (circa 1983-1991). Holder obtained the rights to create a musical version of Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel The Phantom of the Opera and brought on and Arthur Kopit to write the music and lyrics in 1983. Holder planned to direct the production, but it was put on hold. A significant volume of material related to The Wiz (1975) and Timbuktu! (1978) includes multiple script drafts, production materials, audition materials, correspondence, and drawings. The subseries also contains several items written by Holder’s long-term collaborator Jacques Sigurd, including The Voodoo Tragedy (1975), and an original screenplay written by William Dufty titled The Happening (undated). Several scripts are for television programs in which the Geoffrey Holder Dance Group performed. Various scripts in this series were sent to Holder to read and review.
