The Boy was born just a few years ago while bassist Pete Wentz, vocalist Patrick Stump, and guitarist Joe Trohman were in high school in Chicago. They recruited their buddy Andrew Hurley to man the drums, and the quartet quickly recorded a demo (a joint CD with Project Rocket), and released their first full-length record Take This To Your Grave on the Fueled By Ramen label. At their age, it’s a good bet Top Ramen is their source of fuel. Hurley, one of the band’s elder statesmen at 24 years old, joined after Fall Out Boy unsuccessfully auditioned a series of drummers. “I was in college, going full-time, and we were playing local shows. That was about the time we started talking to labels, and interest started growing, and it totally took off very fast,” Hurley says with an innocent voice that befits his calm, bespectacled face, but belies his tattooed arms and intense playing. “We were writing and recording Take This To Your Grave when I was still in school full time. I’d be going down from Milwaukee, which is an hour and a half away, so I’d be driving there and back everyday to go to school, and then I’d go do pre-production for the record.

  • One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and Their Fans
One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Annie Lyons TC 660H Plan II Honors Program The University of Texas at Austin December 2020 __________________________________________ Renita Coleman Department of Journalism Supervising Professor __________________________________________ Hannah Lewis Department of Musicology Second Reader 2 ABSTRACT Author: Annie Lyons Title: One Direction Infection: Media Representations of Boy Bands and their Fans Supervising Professors: Renita Coleman, Ph.D. Hannah Lewis, Ph.D. Boy bands have long been disparaged in music journalism settings, largely in part to their close association with hordes of screaming teenage and prepubescent girls. As rock journalism evolved in the 1960s and 1970s, so did two dismissive and misogynistic stereotypes about female fans: groupies and teenyboppers (Coates, 2003). While groupies were scorned in rock circles for their perceived hypersexuality, teenyboppers, who we can consider an umbrella term including boy band fanbases, were defined by a lack of sexuality and viewed as shallow, immature and prone to hysteria, and ridiculed as hall markers of bad taste, despite being driving forces in commercial markets (Ewens, 2020; Sherman, 2020). Similarly, boy bands have been disdained for their perceived femininity and viewed as inauthentic compared to “real” artists— namely, hypermasculine male rock artists. While the boy band genre has evolved and experienced different eras, depictions of both the bands and their fans have stagnated in media, relying on these old stereotypes (Duffett, 2012). This paper aimed to investigate to what extent modern boy bands are portrayed differently from non-boy bands in music journalism through a quantitative content analysis coding articles for certain tropes and themes.

The Politics of Popular Music COURSE DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES: In “The Poli9cs of Popular Music,” you will examine popular UNIVERSITY music as an art form, a social movement, and a business. In doing so, you will consider what studying pop music — including songs, EGMT 1510 albums, videos, and performances — can tell us about the Fall 2018 polical context and historical moment in which it was created Monroe 134 and, in turn, the world it helped create. Mon/Weds You will ask serious Ques9ons about the produc9on and 3:30 to 4:45 recep9on of popular music, such as: Why did it take a white arst like Elvis covering a song like “Hound Dog” to make it a hit, and OF VIRGINIA why did his performance of the song on television ignite such controversy? Who decided holding a “Disco Demoli9on Night” between the two halves of a 1979 Chicago White Sox/Detroit Tigers doubleheader was a good promoonal idea, and why did it turn into a riot? What made Ronald Reagan praise Bruce Springsteen at a 1984 campaign stop, and why did Springsteen UNIVERSITY tell a concert audience two days later that Reagan must not have understood his songs? Why did a conserva9ve pundit dismiss Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” as “paranoi[d]…Millennial Professor groupthink,” and what does that reac9on have to do with the Josh Mound song and its video’s content? mound@ You will learn to think cri9cally about the nature of popular music as an art form and musicians as ar9sts. You also will learn virginia.edu how to analyze popular music as an aesthe9c object and how to describe sounds and lyrics and the emo9ons they evoke.
