3. What does the first part describe ? (50 words)

The first part describes a football match in Jess’s (day)dream. She sees herself playing for Manchester United alongside famous players such as David Beckham. It is but a dream since Jess is a girl and is scoring a goal, thus becoming journalists’ new pet player and eclipsing David Beckham, a highly unlikely situation. (54 words)

4. Explain why Alan Hansen says “ tell you what, I wish she was playing for Scotland.”

Alan Hansen must be Scottish himself, and therefore must be a Scottish football fan and supporter. As in Jess’s dream she has become a football star, no wonder Alan Hansen would like her to play for the team he supports, Scotland. (NDLR : Actually Alan Hansen was a former Scottish football player and is a BBC football commentator.)

5. What happens during the blank between line 21 and line 22? Give a title to each part.

The first part was a dream. The second part is the reality of Jess’s life, with her mother coming into her bedroom and interrupting her dream. Two possible titles are Dream(ing) for part 1 and (Back to) reality for part 2. We learn about a mother and a sister, Pinky. (1 point for the 2 characters) We learn that Pinky is getting engaged the day after. (1 point) The mother wants her daughter to come downstairs, probably to be with the rest of the family or to be part of the engagement party preparations, or to help her sister who is getting hysterical or stressed, or who has things to prepare for the party, we don’t know. 7. What do the words ‘‘Football shootball!’ reveal about Jess’s mother’s point of view about Jess’s love for football?

We discover that Jess’s mother does not share, let alone understand her daughter’s love for football. This expression is obviously derogatory / pejorative / a criticism of football. ‘Shootball’ may mean that the mother wants to shot the ball with a gun, or that shooting the ball is all the game is about, which in her eyes is not much.

8. What does David Beckham represent for Jess? (50 words)

David Beckham is Jess’s role model, her hero, her star, her confidant, her (bosom) friend, maybe even her family for her, and definitely her role model. She spends time talking to him and addressing him. She has pinned up posters of him in her bedroom. She may be in love with him because he is so handsome and he is a star. But more than the man, she admires the player and his technique. He represents / embodies everything she wants to become (a good football player) and achieve (fame).
