The work of professional football Most professional footballers don’t have a Ferrari, a mansion, a celebrity girl- friend or a lucrative book deal. Few of them will ever play at Wembley. Their careers are short, insecure, and played out under constant scrutiny. The Work of Professional Football offers a sociological study of the working lives of ‘ordinary’ professional footballers. Based on extensive research, including in- depth interviews with players who have achieved varying degrees of professional success, it provides unprecedented insight into this ‘closed’ world, and a unique sociological exploration of a contemporary working culture. The Scottish national football team’s last gasp 10 victory over Slovenia in the World Cup qualifier on Sunday March 26 has breathed some life into a campaign that was trundling towards elimination. The Scots are now fourth of six nations – two points off secondplaced Slovakia but six behind table topping England, aka the Auld Enemy. It will take more than one home win to lift the longsuffering Tartan Army, however. Next year it will be 20 years since Scotland’s legendary fanbase last saw their nation reach the finals of any international football tournament. That World Cup 1998 in France was a typically Scottish outing that lurched from heroics (against Brazil) to disaster (Morocco). In hindsight it was the end of a golden era stretching back to the late 1960s. For a time, Scotland was to worldclass footballers what Detroit was to soul singers. Big names, including Denis Law, Archie Gemmill, Jimmy Johnstone, Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen seemed to come off an endless production line of navy blue talent. The Scots barely missed a World Cup in that era and just about looked like contenders in 1974 and 1978 – albeit snatching romantic defeat in the opening rounds from the jaws of victory each time.

The aesthetic personality of football does not submit to a template inappropriately borrowed from elsewhere. One consequence is that beauty should not be awarded privileged status. Any just aesthetics of the game must be properly hospitable to the game's less hygienic and agonistic features, such as stolid defence, scuffling and scavenging, heroic goalkeeping, visible toil and strain, the intrinsic possibility of failure, the visibly strenuous working with materials (most obviously the body), one’s exposed vulnerability to conditions, luck, loss of form and the injured or ageing body, and the visible realisation of a plurality of life-values in a self-enclosed domain. This gives football a deep affinity with a Modernist aesthetics. However, ‘traditional’ aesthetics might also have a substantive and precious input into the aesthetics of football.
