Here we show that the elastic flexure dynamics of the uplifting southern shoulder of the rapidly-extending, asymmetric Corinth Rift (Greece) are recorded in 3D by its fluvial network. We explore the evolution of the mechanical flexure of the lithosphere at rift full length by means of DEM-based river profile analysis of a series

  • Comparing Extension on Multiple Time and Depth Scales in the Corinth Rift, Central Greece ∗ Rebecca E

Henstock and Jonathan M. Bull School of Ocean and Earth Science, University of Southampton, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, SO14 3ZH, UK. E-mail: [email protected] Accepted 2011 May 10. Received 2011 May 5; in original form 2011 January 17 SUMMARY The young (< 5 Ma) Corinth Rift is an ideal natural laboratory to investigate rift deformation mechanisms by comparing extension rates determined by various methods spanning different depth and time ranges. Corinth Rift geodetic extension rates averaged over 5–100 yr have been interpreted to increase from ∼5mmyr–1 or less in the east to >10–15 mm yr–1 in the west. We quantify total upper-crust and whole-crust extension on three profiles across the Corinth Rift. Whole-crust extension is greater across the central rift (∼11–21 km) than across GJI Geodynamics and tectonics the western part of the rift (∼5–13 km). This correlates with the overall rift morphology, which shows maximum basement subsidence, sediment accumulation, rift width and greatest summed Late Quaternary fault displacements in the central basin, but contrasts with the pattern of geodetic extension rates which are greater to the west of the central basin. The E–W increase in strain rates interpreted from geodetic data cannot have persisted over rift history to produce the observed rift morphology. We suggest the discrepancy between short- term and long-term extension patterns is related to shifts in the loci of maximum extension due to fault growth and linkage during Corinth Rift history, and is likely a characteristic of rift development in general.

  • Ecological Rainwater Management in Urban Areas. Preliminary Considerations for the City of Corinth, Greece E

The Effects of Irrigation and Drainage on Rural and Urban Landscapes, Patras, Greece Ecological Rainwater Management in Urban Areas. Preliminary Considerations for the city of Corinth, Greece E. Papafotiou, K.L. Katsifarakis* Department of Civil Engineering, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 54124, Greece Abstract Ecological rainwater management methods in urban areas can contribute to: 1) reduction of total rain water runoff and of its peak, 2) storage of rainwater, in order to cover low quality water demand, such as park irrigation, 3) local aquifer replenishment, 4) reduction of property damage and activity disruption, which is due to insufficient sewer networks, 5) improvement of rain runoff quality through pollutant retention, filtration, decomposition, plant uptake, etc. 6) mitigation of pollution of runoff receiving water bodies and 7) upgrading of urban and suburban landscape. In this paper emphasis is placed on rain gardens. Their main features are outlined, criteria for selection of construction sites (such as rain water collection efficiency, landscape improvement and cost) are discussed and certain suitable public or municipal sites in the city of Corinth, Greece, are briefly described. Examples include a degraded street area, a traffic island, a school area, preexisting flower beds, a suburban railway station and abandoned railway tracks. © 2015 The Authors.
