08 ROUND 13 | Wanderers FC vs Central Coast Mariners his year has seen the NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers embark on Ta captivating journey – unimaginable at times, through the greatest of highs and lows. From a bitter return to the grandest stage of Australian club football to a glorious night in Riyadh when a “small club” became a continental powerhouse, the Wanderers story has got it all. Having competed in four separate competitions and participated in an astonishing total of 47 matches, 2014 will go down in the books as one of, if not the, busiest schedules for an Australian club ever. From playing in front of less than 3,000 at Marden Sports Complex in Adelaide to over 63,000 in the King Fahd International Stadium for the Champions League Final, the Wanderers have experienced it all in 2014. From the start Wanderland did not have to wait long to taste victory in the New Year when a team from East Sydney came to visit in early January. A tense battle was fought out but the rightful winner was crowned when Brandon Santalab popped up in the 86th minute to score the winner in front of a sold out Pirtek Stadium. 2014 saw the Club’s debut in the AFC Champions League and led to the Wanderers proudest moment on the football pitch. Battling salary cap restrictions, congested fixtures and, often, ungracious hosts the Wanderers were well and truly behind the eight ball from the get-go. While a 3-1 loss to open the campaign dampened some spirits, the Red & Black soon surpassed expectations as wins against Guizhou Renhe, Kawasaki Frontale and a 2-0 reverse against Ulsan Hyundai saw the Wanderers top the group and set-up a meeting with Japanese Champions Sanfrecce Hiroshima. By this stage the Wanderers had secured second spot on the table meaning a week’s rest during the finals – a reprieve no doubt welcomed with open arms by Popovic who was by this stage juggling fixtures and competing priorities. Wanderers were superb against Central Coast in a spectacular Semi-Final atmosphere at Pirtek Stadium – Youssouf Hersi and Iacopo La Rocca sending the team through to their second consecutive Grand Final. Western Sydney became Australia’s second ever representative in the AFC Champions League Final after Adelaide United’s dream run that ultimately came short in 2008. ’s 64th minute strike in the first leg against Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal at Pirtek Stadium somehow proved the sole goal of the tie.
