Special Edition SPECIAL EDITION COMPETITIONS, RESULTS, RECORDS Dear friends! Azerbaijan is a young, dynamic country rapidly growing in all spheres, as well as the field of sports. As a result of the sports policy initiated by national leader Heydar Aliyev and successfully continued by President Ilham Aliyev our country had been introduced to the world as a sporting nation. The rise of economic power of the country year by year had a positive impact on the development of the sport, as in all other spheres. Today the sport have a great care and attention at the state level. 12-22 May 2017 This year was announced as a “Year of the Islamic Solidarity” in Azerbaijan. It is an important initiative to unite all Muslim countries with each other even more closely. In this regard, the IV Islamic Solidarity Games which going to be held in our country will be a great celebration of sport, also will show our friendship. Islamic Solidarity Games to be held in our will be games of unity, brotherhood and friendship. As a result of the high care and attention to sports and sportsmen by the government, our athletes had a great success on the international arena, worthy represent the country. Azerbaijan became to one of the world sports centers and organize most prestigious sports events in a high level. We are confident that, we – Azerbaijan Weightlifting Federation will have an own little part in the IV Islamic Solidarity Games. Our athletes will demonstrate their full strength and try hard to please the azeri nation in the Islamic Games. High organizational level, and success which will be achieved will introduce the name of Azerbaijan to the world once again. I wish each of you a great sports holiday! Thirty weight categories in three styles will be contested over seven days of competition. The Individual World Cup is serving as a substitute event for the 2020 World Championships. The event was canceled after not fulfilling the criteria set forth by the UWW Bureau. The criteria included having at least 8 of 10 of the top nations from the 2019 World Championships and 70% of total athletes participate in 2020. The Individual World Cup represents international wrestling's return to competition and will lay the groundwork for safety protocols and countermeasures around all competitions. This will be vital to ensure a safe environment for future competitions in the lead up to the Tokyo Olympics. The event has a prize pool of 300,000 Swiss Francs, which will be divided evenly across the 30 weight categories. Lopez claimed his third Olympic Games gold medal at super heavyweight by sneaking past reigning world champion Riza KAYAALP (TUR) in the 130kg final at Rio 2016, while world champion Vlasov followed up a win in London four years ago with another gold medal performance in Rio de Janeiro. Of the four remaining Greco-Roman champions crowned at Carioca Arena, only Ismael BORRERO MOLINA (CUB) at 59kg was able to match Vlasov by moving seamlessly from world champion to the Olympic Games gold medal – his first. Like Lopez, two-time world champion Artur ALEKSANYAN (ARM), who slipped to No.2 in the rankings at 98kg after a loss at the European championships in March, reclaimed the top spot with a 3-0 victory over Yasmany LUGO CABRERA (CUB). Meanwhile, Davit CHAKVETADZE (RUS) went from third to No.1 at 85kg with a win over world champ Zhan BELENYUK (UKR) and 2014 world champion Davor STEFANEK (SRB) carved his way through a crowded field at 66kg to go from No.6 in the rankings to No.1.

    TURKISH AND US PRESIDENTS MET IN OSAKA On June 28-29, Japanese city of Osaka hosted the G20 Summit. Along with the G20 heads of state, representatives from Spain, Singapore, Thailand, Egypt, Senegal, Chile, Vietnam and the Netherlands were also invited to the meeting in Osaka. The main outcomes of the G20 summit were meetings of leaders of Russia, the United States and China, discussion of issues on the START-3 Treaty and trade wars. Despite the lack of breakthrough solutions, forum participants confirmed their desire to continue improving the global trading system, including the WTO reform. In addition, the summit participants have concluded that it is necessary to resist the dissemination of information about terrorism through the Internet. According to a number of commentators, the G20 agenda itself has faded into the background - basically all attention has been focused on meetings of the leaders. In particular, the meeting of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and US President Donald Trump attracted much attention. Two leaders managed to reach agreement on a number of important issues of bilateral cooperation and regional policy. Following the meeting, R.T. Erdogan announced that D. Trump’s visit to Turkey was scheduled for July. PRESIDENT OF TURKMENISTAN VISITED TATARSTAN On June 23, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov paid a working visit to the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, Kazan.
