BUNDITH PHUNSOMBATLERT

Bundith Phunsombatlert is a media artist living and working in NYC. Through media art projects, he designs systems for sharing and communicating with the viewer that explore and transform fact-based orientation to imagination. This parallels his migration between traditional and new media, as well as from his native to his current home in the US. Furthermore, by interpreting the transformative space in which the state of being and becoming meet in interactive art, his artwork offers a unique concept of “new” media art. For Phunsombatlert, “new” media is defined not only by the use of technology, but also by the way each individual (himself included) can connect personal background and cultural identity to transform history globally.

The concept of the 2017 awards, Returning Dialogue: Fragments of Blue and White Porcelain, takes form using fragmented porcelain pieces with digitally transferred illustrations referencing historical photographs of Asian Americans. The deconstructed porcelain here implies the state of beginning, pushing the boundaries beyond the standard set of rules, and the ability to be transformed through the effect of the surrounding space.

Originally from China, blue and white porcelain has a long multicultural history through innovation, trade, and exchange. Cobalt blue, imported from the Middle East, was incorporated into the innovation of porcelain in China to create what is now known as “blue and white porcelain” and was dispersed extensively through the 14th century. Eventually it was in special production by order only for exclusive clients from the West, until the establishment of a porcelain factory in Europe in the 18th century. As a result, this blue and white porcelain embodies innumerable complex social and political implications that are interwoven into its history. Parallel to the migration of this artifact, Returning Dialogue: Fragments of Blue and White Porcelain aims to trace the lives of Asian migrants through the ceramic form that originated in Asia, migrants who were also absorbed and transformed by the journey of time into new environments. 7 PERFORMERS
