The publication is arranged into two major parts. The first part provides commentaries and speculationon the study of the Third World, pointing out some of the unexploited opportunities for innovation. Innovative approaches and some illustrations for studying I the Third World are offered in the second major part. Innovations described include computer assisted instruction, simulations and games, audio-visual media, different kinds of roles which faculty members can paly, using students as teachers and architects, different approaches to language-learning, and using the worldas a s classroom in overseas study programs. PREFACE Concerned that many important innovations in undergraduate edu- cation were apparently having little impact on the transnational di- mensions of American higher education, the Council for Intercultural Studies and Programs (formerly tae National Council of Associations for International Studies) sought support from the Institute of In- ternational Studies of the U.S. Office of Education two years ago to undertake a project designed to define more precisely the nature of the problem, if not to solve it. The project has two major purposes. The first is to identify instances in which "innovative" ap- proaches have been used in the undergraduate study of Asian and Afri- can societies and traditions specifically and the Third World some- what more generally. The major consequence of this effort is reflec- ted in the second section of the present publication, which includes a number of illustrations of what the faculty,members, perhaps partic- ularly those who adopt such practices, regard as "innovations" in undergraduate education. The second objective of the project is to encourage more interest in imaginative, if not necessarily "innovative," approaches to the study of the Third World and to develop more linkages between those involved in introducing important innovations into American under- graduate education and those concerned with international aspects of the undergraduate curriculum in general and Third World studies in particular. (Innovation, which is a relative term, is impossible to define in any meaningfully precise or categorical way.) This objec- tive is being served in several ways. One important part of the U.S. Office of Education-sponsored project is the development of three "model units" which will hopefully be suggestive of how interesting new approaches to the study of Asian and African societies and traditions can be developed by resourceful college faculty members, working with their students.The first of these "model units," dealing with rural social change in India through contrastive visual materials is now completed. The other two "model units," which involve developing a typology of the history of Indian civilization through its cities, based on a series of 8mm. loop films, and participating in an Indian urban problem-solving exercise revolv- ing around the basic requirements of "space" and "shelter" in an urban environment, have been delayed because of the recent crisis in the South Asian subcontinent, but will be available shortly.

    The Free University of New York: The New Left’s Self-Education and Transborder Activism Toru Umezaki Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Toru Umezaki All rights reserved ABSTRACT The Free University of New York: The New Left’s Self-Education and Transborder Activism Toru Umezaki This dissertation addresses the unique history of the Free University (School) of New York (FUNY), 1965-1968, in the context of the American radical movement that occurred amidst the international upheaval of national liberations. The Free University of New York was founded by young radical intellectuals who were inspired by the struggles for self-determination that were taking place in Third World countries. Radicals concerned with Third World liberation movements created the anti-Vietnam War group May 2nd Movement, from which the Free University was born. Although FUNY only existed for a short period of time, from 1965 to 1968 it functioned as a center for radical education and politics for intellectuals in leftist circles within New York and in the United States as a whole. The uniqueness of the Free University lay in its experimental education and in its instructors’ activities beyond the U.S. borders. The radical education at the Free University clearly reflected the interests of New Left intellectuals in the Sixties in America. The transborder activism of the Free University instructors included organizing an international pacifist movement against the U.S. involvement in the War in Vietnam, discussing the meaning of liberation with European intellectuals, and importing the idea of national liberation from the Third World revolutions.
