  • Why the Legal Strategy of Exploiting Immigrant Families Should Worry Us All
\\jciprod01\productn\H\HLP\14-1\HLP101.txt unknown Seq: 1 30-JAN-20 10:17 Why the Legal Strategy of Exploiting Immigrant Families Should Worry Us All Jamie R. Abrams* This article applies a family law lens to explore the systemic and traumatic effects of modern laws and policies on immigrant families. A family law lens widens the scope of individuals harmed by recent immigration laws and policies to show why all families are affected and harmed by shifts in state power, state action, and state rhetoric. The family law lens reveals a worrisome shift in intentionality that has moved the state from a by- stander to family-based immigration trauma to an incendiary agent perpetrating family trauma. Modern immigration laws and policies are deploying legal and political strategies that intentionally sever the parent-child relationship and demonize immigrant families. The family law lens brings into focus how the state is acting under the parens patriae power, which positions the state as the “parent of the nation.” For the state to intervene using its parens patriae power to perpetrate the exact kinds of harms that would be con- sidered abusive if deployed by a parent, suggests a deep dissonant injustice in the use of state power in certain families. This shift in intentionality exacerbates longstanding dif- ferences in government family interventions by race, class, and immigration status. Laws and policies that exploit the hardships of families as political pressure should worry all families under the law because we entrust the state to intervene to protect fami- lies. These political strategies threaten the constitutional norms that are the foundation of modern family law.

  • 5 Things We Learned from Adweek's Bonnie Hammer Profile
5 Things We Learned from AdWeek's Bonnie Hammer Profile 04.21.2014 AdWeek published a lengthy profile of the normally press-shy NBCU Cable Entertainment boss Bonnie Hammer on Monday, and it's packed with insight into the direction the executive has been moving her properties in the year since she being elevated to her current gig. If there's one thing that AdWeek's Sam Thielman stresses over and over again, it's Hammer's laser-focus on the brand identity of each of the properties under her command, and how those clearer identities have made the properties more lucrative for the company. Hammer oversees USA, SyFy, Bravo, E!, Oxygen, G4, and Sprout, among other networks. "She's given Syfy a real identity and an audience, and she's done the same for USA," NBCU Vice Chairman Ron Meyer told the magazine. "It could have been a potpourri of miscellaneous shows that had nothing in common." The entire piece is worth a read. But our five key takeaways: 1. Hammer knows Oxygen needs fixing. And she's on it. Her team realized there was a problem when they did some research that showed Oxygen's viewers were all over the demographic map. Some shows drew 12-year olds, while others skewed 55-plus. "From an ad-sales perspective, it was hard to sell," Hammer told AdWeek. So her team is forging a new brand identity for the female-centic network: aspirational twenty-somethings, just out of school or starting their adult lives. This group has some discretionary money, but not a lot, and are less secure in their positions. "They're a bit more authentic and real because they're coming out of the millennial world," she says.

Ben Mankiewicz Tarana Burke Danny Trejo Quentin Tarantino The Luminary The Impact Award The Visionary The Distinguished Award Award Storyteller Award 2019 TWELFTH ANNUAL Ann-Margret The Legend Award NATIONAL ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT JOURNALISM AWARDS LOS ANGELES PRESS CLUB 12TH ANNUAL National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards A Letter From the Press Club President Good evening and welcome to the 12th annual National Arts & Entertain- ment Journalism Awards. Think about how much the entertainment industry has changed since the Press Club introduced these awards in 2008. Arnold Schwarzenegger was our governor, not a Terminator. Netflix sent you DVDs in the mail. The iPhone was one year old. Fast forward to today and the explosion of technology and content that is changing our lives and keeping journalists busy across the globe. Entertainment journalism has changed as well, with all of us taking a much harder look at how societal issues influence Hollywood, from workplace equality and diversity to coverage of political events, the impact of social media and U.S.-China rela- tions. Your Press Club has thrived amid all this. Participation is way up, with more Chris Palmeri than 600 dues-paying members. The National Arts & Entertainment Journalism Awards have grown and changed as well. Tonight we’re in a ballroom in the Millennium Biltmore Hotel, but in 2008 the awards took place in the Steve Allen Theater, the Press Club’s old home in East Hollywood. That building has since been torn down. Our first event in 2008 featured a cocktail party with no host and only 111 entries in the competition.
