ABSTRACT In the last five years, news of various scandals in the pageant industry has inundated media outlets. These recent incidents are by no means outliers in the history of pageantry. This article ex- plores the significance of one of these controversies - the Rebekah Revels litigation, which stemmed from the disputed 2002 Miss North Carolina pageant. For context, this article first outlines allegations of wrongdoing in early pageants. It proceeds with an analysis of how the Revels liti- gation serves as an exemplar of the types of contract lawsuits that may continue to entangle pageant organizations in the future. Finally, the article provides an examination of the specific legal, economic, and sociocultural effects that the Revels litigation has had, and likely will continue to have, upon the business model of the pageant industry.

  • An Examination of Gender Violence in Two Primary Schools in Uganda and Approaches for Sustainable Prevention Ellen Turner
Doing and undoing gender violence in schools: An examination of gender violence in two primary schools in Uganda and approaches for sustainable prevention Ellen Turner A thesis submitted to the UCL Institute of Education for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2020 2 Author’s declaration I, Ellen Turner, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. This thesis may be made available to the general public for borrowing, photocopying, or consultation without the prior consent of the author. The copyright of the thesis rests with the author. Quotation from the thesis is permitted, provided that full acknowledgement is made. The PhD was funded by a Bloomsbury studentship. Word count: 99, 534 Signed: Date: 31st August 2020 3 Abstract Recent decades have seen huge expansion of research and policy frameworks into preventing violence against children, yet have also shown the persistence and intractability of this violence. While offering potential to challenge violence and inequality, schools are also spaces in which children experience significant acts of physical, emotional and sexual violence, wherein structural inequalities are learned and reinforced, and in which children construct and negotiate their gendered identities in relation to violence. School-based interventions have sought to prevent violence, however little is known about their long-term influence and sustainability. This thesis examines gender violence in two primary schools in Luwero District, Uganda, and the long-term influence of the Good School Toolkit intervention to prevent violence. It offers these findings to the broader field of sustainable approaches to violence prevention in schools.

  • Among the Beautiful People
Page 1 of 3 Among the beautiful people November 8 2003 12:00AM The politics may be deadly but in Venezuela gorgeousness is a patriotic duty. Nicholas Griffin meets the ‘Misses’ and the men who remake them Last month I travelled to Caracas, to act as a judge in the Miss Venezuela competition. With 80 per cent of the population watching the pageant on television, Miss Venezuela commands a much greater audience share than any FA Cup Final. In international beauty competition, the country is dominant, having won four Miss Universes, five Miss Worlds and three Miss International titles in the past 24 years. It is said that Venezuela has two great exports: oil and beauty. The former accounts for more than 90 per cent of GDP, but despite this source of wealth half the populace lives in poverty, a legacy of poor government spanning generations. Even with the oil millions at its disposal, the current Chavez administration persists in blaming its failings on private enterprise and imperialism as it tries to force an unwilling nation towards Cuban-style communism. Beauty, on the other hand, is much more accessible to the average Venezuelan. Whether you travel on the subway or walk the finest shopping streets, you will find men and women who care deeply about how they look. It is estimated that 20 per cent of average household income is spent on beauty products and enhancements. With such interest, it is little wonder that winning the Miss Venezuela title is considered a genuine achievement. As a result, competitors in the pageant come from all walks of life, although the 20 entrants who make the final cut are invariably university students.
