Hinduism: An Overview Hinduism is the major religion of the Indian sub-continent, it is also known as Sanatana Dharma, or the "Eternal Way," it is our planet's original and oldest living religion, with over one billion adherents spread around the world. Today it has four main denominations: Saivism, Shaktism, Vaishnavism and Smartism, each with hundreds of lineages. They represent a broad range of beliefs, practices and mystic goals, but virtually all concur on certain bedrock concepts. All Hindus worship one Supreme Reality, though they call it by many names. There is no eternal hell, no damnation, in Hinduism, and no intrinsic evil--no satanic force that opposes the will of God. Hindus believe that the cosmos was created out of God and is permeated by Him--a Supreme Being who both is form and pervades form, who creates, sustains and destroys the universe only to recreate it again in unending cycles. Hinduism is unique among the world’s religions. To begin with, it is mankind’s oldest spiritual declaration, the very fountainhead of faith on the planet. Hinduism’s venerable age has seasoned it to maturity. It is the only religion which is not founded in a single historic event or prophet, but which itself precedes recorded history. Hinduism has been called the “cradle of spirituality” and the “mother of all religions,” partially because it has influenced virtually every major religion and partly because it can absorb all other religions, honor and embrace their scriptures, their saints, their philosophy. This is possible because Hinduism looks compassionately on all genuine spiritual effort and knows unmistakably that all souls are evolving toward union with the Divine, and all are destined, without exception, to achieve spiritual enlightenment and liberation in this or a future life. -

Revere Mother Power and Flourish Angelica Spearwoman Introduction Sanskrit is a divine language, said to be the only language tapped into the essential nature of the universe. The Rgveda, the first available text of the entire human race, is written in Sanskrit (Vempaty Kutumba Sastry, Sanskrit and Development of World Thought. New Delhi, D.K. Printworld, 2014, vii) and today, many of the words we use have their roots in Sanskrit. It is a language with an infinite and endless amount of words, each word carrying with it its own meaning and context. Like many ancient languages, it is facing its own fear of extinction alongside many of the species living on our planet, including us humans. Now more than ever, it is vital that we look to this language to see what it is we can learn from it before it is too late. In many of the sacred Sanskrit texts, the highest accord is rendered to both women and Mother Earth, however, in today’s dominant culture, women and the earth are not as respected and revered as they once were. Given this background, the paper aims at investigating, through Sanskrit, how Mother Earth and women are depicted, interpreted, and revered. Further, an attempt is made to understand the gap between the Sanskrit perspective of Mother Earth and women and the social practices seen in contemporary India. Specifically, issues related to environmental destruction and the marital life and social security of women in India. This paper seeks to answer the following questions; What makes Sanskrit a divine language? How are Mother Earth and women are depicted, interpreted, and revered in Sanskrit? Can Sanskrit help to bring about a change in rethinking our perspective to Mother Earth and nature? Keeping these questions in mind, the papers tries to portray the power of Sanskrit as a language of higher consciousness, understand and describe how Mother Earth and women are depicted in Sanskrit, and lastly, to relate Sanskrit and the reverence of Mother Earth and women in contemporary Indian culture. -

Bhagavata Purana
Bhagavata Purana The Bh āgavata Pur āṇa (Devanagari : भागवतपुराण ; also Śrīmad Bh āgavata Mah ā Pur āṇa, Śrīmad Bh āgavatam or Bh āgavata ) is one of Hinduism 's eighteen great Puranas (Mahapuranas , great histories).[1][2] Composed in Sanskrit and available in almost all Indian languages,[3] it promotes bhakti (devotion) to Krishna [4][5][6] integrating themes from the Advaita (monism) philosophy of Adi Shankara .[5][7][8] The Bhagavata Purana , like other puranas, discusses a wide range of topics including cosmology, genealogy, geography, mythology, legend, music, dance, yoga and culture.[5][9] As it begins, the forces of evil have won a war between the benevolent devas (deities) and evil asuras (demons) and now rule the universe. Truth re-emerges as Krishna, (called " Hari " and " Vasudeva " in the text) – first makes peace with the demons, understands them and then creatively defeats them, bringing back hope, justice, freedom and good – a cyclic theme that appears in many legends.[10] The Bhagavata Purana is a revered text in Vaishnavism , a Hindu tradition that reveres Vishnu.[11] The text presents a form of religion ( dharma ) that competes with that of the Vedas , wherein bhakti ultimately leads to self-knowledge, liberation ( moksha ) and bliss.[12] However the Bhagavata Purana asserts that the inner nature and outer form of Krishna is identical to the Vedas and that this is what rescues the world from the forces of evil.[13] An oft-quoted verse is used by some Krishna sects to assert that the text itself is Krishna in literary -

Lesson 40 The yamas and niyamas The yamas and niyamas are the Hindu code of conduct. Heeding the ten yamas or “restraints” keeps our instinctive nature in check. Abiding by the ten niyamas, “observances,” makes us more religious and cultured, revealing our refined soul nature. A foundation for our spiritual progress The yamas and niyamas provide the foundation to support our yoga practice and sustain us from day to day and year to year on the path to Siva. 1.AHIMSA: “Noninjury.” Do not harm others by what you do, say or think, even in your dreams. Live a kindly life, never causing fear, pain or injury. See God in everyone. Follow a vegetarian diet. 2.SATYA: “Truthfulness.” Speak only what is true, kind, helpful and necessary. Be true to your promises. Don’t keep secrets from family or friends. Be accurate and frank in discussions. Don’t deceive others. Admit your failings. Do not gossip, backbite or tell lies. 3.ASTEYA: “Nonstealing.” Do not steal. Control your desires, and live within your family’s means. Do not desire what others possess. Do not misuse things you borrow. Do not gamble or fail to repay debts. Do not use others’ names, words, resources or rights without permission and acknowledgement. 4.BRAHMACHARIYA:“Divine conduct.” Control your desires when single, reserving sexual relations for marriage. Before marriage, use vital energies in study, and after marriage in creating family success. Dress and speak modestly. Seek holy company. Avoid pornography and violence on TV, in movies, magazines and online. 5.KSHAMA:“Patience.” Restrain intolerance with people and impatience with circumstances. -

The Twelve Alwars Paige Alvar Bhoothathalvar Peyalvar Thirumalisai Alvar Nammalvar Madhurakavi Alvar Kulashekhara Azhwar Periyalvar Andal Thondaradippodi Alvar Thiruppaan Alvar Thirumangai Alvar In the Sri Vaishnavite tradition in their history of their lineage, they list some outstanding devotees. There were twelve Alvars who appeared in South India. Not all at the same time, but over a period of several centuries. They established the basis of the Krsna bhakti cult in the Kaliyuga. The appearance of such great devotees in the Kaliyuga is predicted in the SrimadBhagavatam. Srimad- Bhagavatam was spoken at the beginning of the Kaliyuga, and when Krsna left this planet then he took with Him dharma. The Vedic dharma at that point disappeared, or became invalid, and spiritual knowledge was also obscured. But it says in the same verse that Lord Krsna left the Srimad Bhagavatam for the people in Kaliyuga to get light out of. Now still, the book Bhagavata was there but they also needed the person Bhagavata, or one who lives the SrimadBhagavatam. In other words, they needed the spiritual master. So in the initial stage of Kaliyuga, the first few centuries, these twelve Alvars appeared in South India, and actually established the basis of what would later on become the four Vaisnava sampradayas. The four sampradayas all had their origin in South India, and the founders of these sampradayas each in their own way drew, to a greater or lesser extent, from this tradition of the Alvars, especially in the Laksmi sampradaya, but it is also there in our sampradaya too, and in the others.
