A guide and list to a collection of Historic Railway Documents www.railarchive.org.uk to e mail click here December 2017 1 Since July 1971, this private collection of printed railway documents from pre grouping and pre nationalisation railway companies based in the UK; has sought to expand it‟s collection with the aim of obtaining a printed sample from each independent railway company which operated (or obtained it‟s act of parliament and started construction). There were over 1,500 such companies and to date the Rail Archive has sourced samples from over 800 of these companies. Early in 2001 the collection needed to be assessed for insurance purposes to identify a suitable premium. The premium cost was significant enough to warrant a more secure and sustainable future for the collection. In 2002 The Rail Archive was set up with the following objectives: secure an on-going future for the collection in a public institution reduce the insurance premium continue to add to the collection add a private collection of railway photographs from 1970‟s onwards provide a public access facility promote the collection ensure that the collection remains together in perpetuity where practical ensure that sufficient finances were in place to achieve to above objectives The archive is now retained by The Bodleian Library in Oxford to deliver the above objectives. This guide which gives details of paperwork in the collection and a list of railway companies from which material is wanted. The aim is to collect an item of printed paperwork from each UK railway company ever opened. -

Success lies in the details and advance technology www.roco.cc H0e Diesellokomotive Diesel locomotive Rh 2095, ÖBB 2 www.roco.cc H0e Von den Simmering Graz Pauker Werken wurde im Jahr 1958 auf der sogenannten „Wie- ner Herbstmesse“ erstmals eine dieselhydraulische Schmalspurlokomotiven: mit 760 mm Spurweite vorgestellt. Unter der Bezeichnung LDH 600/s wurde die 600 PS starke und rund 60 km/h schnelle Lok präsentiert. Die Konstruktion sah einen Antrieb über die mittleren Radsätze sowie Treibstangen vor. Die Österreichischen Bundesbahnen (ÖBB) testeten die Lokomotive noch im gleichen Jahr ausgiebig auf den Strecken von St. Pölten nach Mariazell und Gresten. Bereits im Dezember 1958 wurde mit der 2095.01 die erste, im Vergleich zur Prototyp-Lok umge- baute, Lok in Dienst gestellt. Damit war bei den ÖBB eine neue Loktype unter der Rei- henbezeichnung 2095 vorhanden. Weitere zwei Dieselloks folgten der ersten Maschine. Die Loks der Reihe 2095 bildeten über Jahrzehnte das Rückgrat der ÖBB auf den dieselbetriebenen Schmalspurstrecken. Sie beförderten alleine im Waldviertel täglich eine Vielzahl an Arbeitern zu ihren Betrieben. Doch auch im Güterzugverkehr und insbe- sondere im Rollbock-/Rollwagenverkehr wussten die Stangenloks zu überzeugen. Heute werden einige der Lokomotiven auf touristisch betriebenen Strecken wie der Krimmler- bahn, zwischen Zell am See und Krimml sowie auf der durch die NÖVOG betriebenen Waldviertelbahn von Gmünd aus eingesetzt. Straight from the Simmering Graz Pauker factories, a diesel hydraulic narrow gauge locomotive with a gauge of 760mm was shown for the first time at the “Vienna Autumn Fair” in 1958. -

If we had a $ or £ or € for every time we’ve been asked how to wire track and point-work, we’d be writing this on a beach somewhere while sipping a cold beer! A great layout needs good trackwork, so first - a word about trackwork and getting good performance. Choose carefully! DO think about making your own turnouts if you have even moderate skills. It is not as hard as you think, needs only basic skills and tools... and we do our best to make it easy with our top quality gauges, trackwork frets and templates. PLUS we will soon provide a detailed “How to make track” tutorial too. Interested? Then call or email us and we will do our best to help you. No matter what scale you will model in, DO NOT even consider using insulated frogs! Yes, lazy retailers who do not understand what they sell - and modellers who have never done a proper job of laying track so it runs well may well recommend it to you… but do NOT be tempted. No matter which brand makes the turnouts, if you use insulated frogs, you WILL have small locos stalling or also suffer from wider wheels bridging the frog tip and creating momentary shorts that are hard to fix and really are a source of constant frustration. Use more realistic rail sizes please: Usually this will be code 55 in N, or Code 75 and 83 in OO or HO Scale. -

Appendix J Haddington Branch Line Survey AllanRail East Lothian Access STAG Physical feasibility of re-opening the Haddington Rail Branch Line Background The reopening of the Haddington Railway branch line from the East Coast Main Line (ECML) at Longniddry to Haddington is one of the options that are required to be considered in the East Lothian Access STAG. This initial report informs the appraisal work of the feasibility of re-opening the railway, some of the issues and problems that would need to be resolved, choices that are available and suggests an order of magnitude cost. Because the rest of the railway is electrified it is assumed that the Haddington branch will also be equipped with standard 25Kv overhead electrification equipment. The report is based on a physical site walk-over on 21 February 2019, carried out by David Prescott of AllanRail who has considerable experience in the initial development of re-opened railways in Scotland including walk-overs on the Stirling – Alloa – Kincardine, Airdrie- Bathgate and Borders Railway routes in the inception and pre-construction stages. This is not an engineering assessment, but an initial view based on observation and experience. The route is considered in the Longniddry to Haddington direction and the report is broken down into key route sections.
