A key to reading the motu proprio “Magnum principium” The new Motu Proprio Magnum principium has altered the formulation of some norms of the Codex iuris canonici regarding the translation of liturgical books into modern languages. Pope Francis has introduced some modifications to the text of canon 838 in this Motu Proprio, dated 3 September 2017 and entering into force from 1st October 2017. The reason for these changes is explained in the papal text itself, which recalls and explicates the principles which underlie translations of the Latin typical editions as well as the delicacy required by those who undertake such work. Because the Liturgy is the prayer of the Church it is regulated by ecclesial authority. Given the importance of this work, the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council had already considered the question of the roles of both the Apostolic See and the Episcopal Conferences in this regard (cf. Sacrosanctum concilium, nn.36, 40 & 36). In effect the great task of providing for liturgical translations was guided by norms and by specific Instructions from the competent Dicastery, in particular Comme le prévoit (25 January 1969) and then, after the Codex iuris canonici of 1983, by Liturgiam authenticam (28 March 2001), both published at different stages with the goal of responding to concrete problems which had become evident over the course of time and which had arisen as a result of the complex work that is involved in the translation of liturgical texts. The material relating to the whole field of inculturation was, on the other hand, regulated by the Instruction Varietates legitimae (25 January 1994). -
Psalms Psalm
Cultivate - PSALMS PSALM 126: We now come to the seventh of the "Songs of Ascent," a lovely group of Psalms that God's people would sing and pray together as they journeyed up to Jerusalem. Here in this Psalm they are praying for the day when the Lord would "restore the fortunes" of God's people (vs.1,4). 126 is a prayer for spiritual revival and reawakening. The first half is all happiness and joy, remembering how God answered this prayer once. But now that's just a memory... like a dream. They need to be renewed again. So they call out to God once more: transform, restore, deliver us again. Don't you think this is a prayer that God's people could stand to sing and pray today? Pray it this week. We'll pray it together on Sunday. God is here inviting such prayer; he's even putting the very words in our mouths. PSALM 127: This is now the eighth of the "Songs of Ascent," which God's people would sing on their procession up to the temple. We've seen that Zion / Jerusalem / The House of the Lord are all common themes in these Psalms. But the "house" that Psalm 127 refers to (in v.1) is that of a dwelling for a family. 127 speaks plainly and clearly to our anxiety-ridden thirst for success. How can anything be strong or successful or sufficient or secure... if it does not come from the Lord? Without the blessing of the Lord, our lives will come to nothing. -

Fœderatio Internationalis Una Voce Positio N. 33 THE SANCTORAL CYCLE OF THE EXTRAORDINARY FORM FEBRUARY 2018 From the General Introduction These papers, commissioned by the International Federation Una Voce, are offered to stimulate and inform debate about the 1962 Missal among Catholics ‘attached to the ancient Latin liturgical traditions’, and others interested in the liturgical renewal of the Church. They are not to be taken to imply personal or moral criticism of those today or in the past who have adopted practices or advocated reforms which are subjected to criticism. In composing these papers we adopt the working assumption that our fellow Catholics act in good will, but that nevertheless a vigorous and well-informed debate is absolutely necessary if those who act in good will are to do so in light of a proper understanding of the issues. The authors of the papers are not named, as the papers are not the product of any one person, and also because we prefer them to be judged on the basis of their content, not their authorship. The International Federation Una Voce humbly submits the opinions contained in these papers to the judgement of the Church. THE SANCTORAL CYCLE OF THE EXTRAORDINARY FORM: Abstract Pope Benedict XVI foresaw the inclusion of new saints in the calendar of the Extraordinary Form. This does not imply that this Form will cease to have a distinct calendar; calendrical differences have always been a feature of the Church’s liturgy. The EF Sanctoral Cycle is distinctive in having a greater number of feasts than that of the Ordinary Form; of including a large number of very ancient saints; and of commemorating the miraculous. -

MORIN. In Chapter I Jerome is speaking himself on his method(s?) of translating the 'hebraica veritas'. Chapter II discusses the afflnities between Hh and the other Latin Psalters (some of the evidence should weaken ALLGEIER'S thesis that Hh preceded Hg). Chapter III investigates the relations between Hh and LXX, and especially the all-pervading influence of a.', a', (0', upon Hh (this being the main part of the book: 62 out of 139 pages). Jerome's insufficient knowledge of Hebrew along with some other observations on the nature of Hh, compel M. to minimize the value of Hh for recogniz- ing the Hebrew text on which Jerome was working. It is a great pity that this book will have lost some of its importance before coming into general use, since M.'s book (preface dated June 1955) is based upon HARDEN'S 1925 edition 1) of Hh, which was based upon 9 Mss, and not upon the more recent edition (imprimatur dated June 1954) of H. de SAINTE-MARIE,which is based upon 19 Mss. The use of SAINTE- MARIE's edition invalidates a number of the examples given in HARDEN. A Tenebrae Service
The following is adapted from the Episcopal Book of Occasional Services, 1994 edition. Concerning the Service: The name Tenebrae (the Latin word for "darkness" or "shadows") has for centuries been applied to the ancient monastic night and early morning services (Matins and Lauds) of the last three days of Holy Week, which in medieval times came to be celebrated on the preceding evening. Apart from the chant of the Lamentations (in which each verse is introduced by a letter of the Hebrew alphabet), the most conspicuous feature of the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles and other lights in the church until only the Paschal Candle, considered a symbol of our Lord, remains. Toward the end of the service this candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the forces of evil. At the very end, a loud noise is made, symbolizing the earthquake at the time of the resurrection (Matthew 28:2), the Paschal Candle is restored to its place, and by its light all depart in silence. Tenebrae The ministers enter the church in silence and proceed to their places. The Office then begins immediately with the Antiphon on the first Psalm. It is customary to sit for the Psalmody.
