Walker (Department of Political Science) Outside Member: Dr. Stephen Ross (Department of English) Additional Member: Dr. David Cook (Victoria College, University of Toronto) The Metaphysics Experiment attempts to explicate a theory and history of universalism in modern physics, through an analysis of its conception of nature. Understood as an axiomatic and hegemonic metaphysical premise through four hundred years of scientific and political history, universalism is defined in terms of its general and persistent claim to nature or truth as an ahistorical reality. Thus, I argue that universalism is directly implicated in, not opposed to, the (Christian) monotheistic conception of God. Moreover, universalism constitutes the logic according to which nature is differentiated from history, culture, and politics. It thus constructs both sides of the same ostensible oppositions in the so-called science and culture wars that determine much of today’s politics of nature. The scientific and political dominance of universalism is demonstrated through a history in five acts. Using the current Large Hadron Collider experiment in Geneva as a principal case study in Act 1, and drawing on contemporary philosopher of science, Isabelle Stengers, I consider four pivotal historical moments in the history of physics and metaphysics that determine the universalist claims of this contemporary experiment. In Act 2, the mid-20th century development of Albert Einstein’s General Relativity framework and Big Bang Theory is read against Martin Heidegger’s critique of identity logic. In Act 3, the mid-17th century emergence of the mathematical universe in modern science and philosophy, through Galileo Galilei and René Descartes, is read against Benedict Spinoza’s univocal metaphysics. In Act 4, the late 19th century invention of particle or quantum physics is read against Henri Bergson’s idea of mind-matter dualism. Finally, in Act 5, considering the contemporary use of natural constants in physics, the insights of Michel Serres, Bruno Latour, Peter Sloterdijk, Heidegger, Stengers and Spinoza are drawn together to problematize the modern historical role of physics and its metaphysical constitution of nature. Beyond these historical event-scenes, I also offer a theoretical explication of five logics, demonstrated individually Act by Act, that comprise different dimensions of science in action. Newsom 1 Introduction For reasons that are not yet entirely clear, sharp disagreements about pre- determinism and free will became a significant feature of Jewish theological stances in the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Josephus provides the most ex- plicit consideration of these issues in ancient Jewish sources, as he attempts to distinguish the positions of the three major Jewish sects with respect to the philosophical category of “fate” (εἱμαρμένη). Josephus identifies the position of the Essenes as believing strongly in fate, to the apparent exclusion of free will (Ant. 13.172). Similarly, modern scholarly treatments of the Qumran yaḥad have acknowledged the very strong predeterminist element in their thinking, attested in a variety of sectarian or closely related texts.1 At the same time, there has been a degree of perplexity as to what to do with the obviously volun- tarist statements and assumptions that are present in these same documents. A variety of suggestions have been made, mostly to the effect that the sectar- ians were inconsistent or not fully systematic in their beliefs.2 This may in- deed be the case, though Jonathan Klawans argues that, properly understood, all deterministic systems are consistent with voluntarism in a rather minimal 1 I take the Qumran yaḥad movement to be Essene, though I consider it possible that the term “Essene” may also have referred to groups not formally part of the yaḥad. Kittler’s Aufschreibesysteme 1800/1900 (1985, translated as Discourse Networks 1800/1900) was regarded as belonging to a type of book that might be labeled “kulturtechnisch,” which included other works such as Hans-Dieter Bahr’s Über den Umgang mit Maschinen (1983, “On interacting with machines”), Jean Baudrillard’s L’Échange symbolique et la mort (1976, Symbolic Exchange and Death), Oskar Negt and Alexander Kluge’s Geschichte und Eigensinn (1981, History and Obstinacy), Wolfgang Schivelbusch’s Geschichte der künstlichen Helligkeit im 19. Many of the heated arguments about the meaning of “Bell’s theorem” arise because this phrase can refer to two different theorems that John Bell proved, the first in 1964 and the second in 1976. His 1964 theorem is the incompatibility of quantum phenomena with the dual assumptions of locality and determinism. His 1976 theorem is the incompatibility of quantum phenomena with the unitary property of local causality. This is contrary to Bell’s own later assertions, that his 1964 theorem began with that single, and indivisible, assumption of local causality (even if not by that name). While there are other forms of Bell’s theorems — which I present to explain the relation between Jarrett-completeness, “fragile locality”, and EPR-completeness — I maintain that Bell’s two versions are the essential ones. Although the two Bell’s theorems are logically equivalent, their assumptions are not, and the different versions of the theorem suggest quite different conclusions, which are embraced by different communities.

Serres became a bestselling author in France but has been largely neglected in Anglophone scholarship. Branches is a good a place as any to start to navigate and provide a glimpse of his lucidly inclusive and complex thought. Geoghegan / Occult Communications In 1864, the French neurologist Jean-Martin Charcot advanced a communicative account of spiritualism. Speaking to auditors of his medical lectures at l’Hôpital de la Salpêtrière, he recounted the case of an outbreak of spiritisme at a military penitentiary in Brittany.1 According to Charcot, the officers’ wives at the penitentiary convened séances—at the time a fashionable diversion in Paris salons—to pass the idle hours away in the remote military installation, which in turn instigated maddened possessions in the daughter and two sons of one officer. Charcot diagnosed dreary settings, congenital nervousness, social isolation, and a lack of parental supervision as features that contributed to the children’s susceptibility to outside influence. In addition, the family’s belief in the marvelous and its immoderate consumption of ghost stories had amplified the suggestive powers of the séance.2 Under these inauspicious circumstances a trickle of superstitious inputs transformed into a torrent of hysteria.

Peña-Guzmán Johns Hopkins University The Scientific Face of Beauvoir Without a doubt, the single most powerful (and illustrious) element of Simone de Beauvoir’s magnum opus, The Second Sex (1949), is her radical declaration that biological processes do not make a “woman.” Social relations do. Perhaps more so than any other claim found in any her works, this claim helped Beauvoir bulldoze over the mythos of gender essentialism that has saturated Western philosophy since the days of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle. Indeed, according to some, this claim turned The Second Sex into the “feminist bible” of the twentieth century. Of course, various other thinkers—living both before and after Beauvoir—have made comparable claims about the relationship between biology and gender, usually from the standpoint of value theory.
