A nivel mundial, los principales abastecedores de estas especies para los mercados internacionales son Estados Unidos y algunos países del Sudeste Asiático como Indonesia y Singapur, sin embargo, un gran aumento en la participación se observa por parte de países de Latinoamérica como Colombia, Brasil, Perú y Venezuela, sobre la base de una fauna diversa y del atractivo ornamental, principalmente, de peces. Esta situación, sin embargo, es altamente dinámica, lo que se demuestra en la incorporación reciente de Marruecos y España, quienes se proyectan como grandes proveedores internacionales superando incluso a Estados Unidos. Chile, dadas las condiciones geográficas y ambientales, no posee especies de importancia comercial desde el punto de vista ornamental, por lo que debe importar la totalidad de estas especies para su comercialización a nivel local. La autorización para la importación de especies hidrobiológicas es función de la Subsecretaría de Pesca (Subpesca), mientras que las funciones de fiscalización de unidades de cuarentena y emisión de certificados sanitarios son ejecutadas por el Servicio Nacional de Pesca (Sernapesca). En este contexto, asociado al riesgo que considera la introducción de cualquier organismo vivo (amenaza a la biodiversidad local, alteración de la cadena trófica, hibridación y pérdida de material genético e introducción de agentes patógenos), este proyecto está orientado a caracterizar la actividad a nivel nacional y a establecer los requisitos de introducción, cultivo, mantención y comercialización de especies ornamentales, insertándose en el marco de las políticas para el Desarrollo Sustentable de la Acuicultura en Chile, explicitadas en la Política Nacional de Acuicultura (PNA). Desde la promulgación de la PNA, en agosto de 2003, se ha definido más claramente la orientación de la gestión e investigación en materia sanitaria y ambiental, con especial referencia a las especies de cultivo comercial, las que en su conjunto representan el sector productivo con más proyecciones a nivel nacional. La PNA, si bien establece las acciones necesarias para propender al crecimiento y desarrollo económico en un escenario con equidad de acceso, especifica que para lograr este objetivo es prioritario establecer acciones concretas tendientes a proteger el patrimonio sanitario y ambiental, de tal forma que la actividad pueda ser sustentable. En este sentido, son variadas las acciones que se han comenzado a desarrollar en el ámbito de revisión de las normas aplicadas a la actividad acuicultora, como la definición de zonas aptas, implementación de programas y sistemas de vigilancia epidemiológica y ambiental. Estas medidas, en su conjunto, están orientadas principalmente a las especies de importancia comercial destinadas a consumo humano, sin embargo, cuando se hace referencia a especies hidrobiológicas no sólo se deben considerar los recursos que son cultivados con este fin, sino que también aquellas pertenecientes a una actividad en ii INFORME FINAL FIP 2005-17. “BASES CIENTIFICAS PARA LA ELABORACIÓN DE PROTOCOLOS PARA LA INTERNACIÓN DE ESPECIES ORNAMENTALES AL PAÍS” INSTITUTO DE FOMENTO PESQUERO / DIVISIÓN INVESTIGACIÓN EN ACUICULTURA creciente desarrollo referida a la importación y comercialización de especies ornamentales. Dentro de este contexto, el Consejo de Investigación Pesquera (CIP) priorizó un estudio tendiente a contar con la información que permita ordenar más apropiadamente la actividad comercial vinculada con las especies ornamentales, toda vez que es un negocio que ha crecido marcadamente en los últimos años, y para lo cual es imprescindible el desarrollo de orientaciones que permitan fortalecer el cuidado del patrimonio ambiental y sanitario del país. En virtud de la necesidad de sistematizar y regular la actividad de importación y cultivo de especies ornamentales, se ha desarrollado una serie de actividades orientadas al cumplimiento del objetivo general y objetivos específicos de los términos básicos de referencia, entre las cuales se incluyen como los más relevantes, realizar un diagnóstico de la situación presente y perspectivas de la actividad de importación y cultivo de especies ornamentales; realizar una propuesta de modificación a la normativa vigente; elaborar directrices y proponer medidas de manejo para la internación y mantención de especies ornamentales y finalmente, realizar una evaluación económica de las medidas propuestas. De esta manera, a través del análisis de la normativa nacional de importación de especies hidrobiológicas al país, del análisis de la información obtenida del Servicio Nacional de Aduanas respecto de las especies ornamentales hidrobiológicas importadas, de las reuniones sostenidas con los organismos oficiales involucrados en el proceso de importación y de la aplicación y análisis de las encuestas, así como de las visitas realizadas a las instalaciones de importadores, se logró diagnosticar la situación actual y las perspectivas de desarrollo de esta actividad a nivel nacional. Utilizando la información entregada por la Subsecretaria de Pesca en cuanto a las especies ingresadas al país, se iii INFORME FINAL FIP 2005-17. “BASES CIENTIFICAS PARA LA ELABORACIÓN DE PROTOCOLOS PARA LA INTERNACIÓN DE ESPECIES ORNAMENTALES AL PAÍS” INSTITUTO DE FOMENTO PESQUERO / DIVISIÓN INVESTIGACIÓN EN ACUICULTURA caracterizaron 152 especies ornamentales, entre las que se encuentran peces, moluscos, crustáceos y plantas elaborándose una ficha individual que incluye fotografías y las principales características de cada especie como distribución geográfica, tipo de reproducción, hábitat, entre otras. Por otra parte, el análisis exhaustivo de la legislación nacional e internacional asociada al proceso de importación, así como de los tratados, protocolos y/o acuerdos internacionales suscritos por Chile en esta materia, permitieron establecer los criterios comparativos entre la institucionalidad y legislación nacional y la experiencia internacional en la autorización de internación de especies hidrobiológicas ornamentales. A base de este análisis comparativo, se estableció una propuesta de modificación a la normativa nacional asociada al proceso de importación y mantención/cultivo de especies ornamentales a fin de promover la actividad en un marco de sustentabilidad sanitaria, ambiental y económica. De igual manera, se presentó una propuesta de medidas de manejo para los stocks importados y cultivados a nivel nacional y un modelo de análisis de riesgo diseñado para su aplicación en el ámbito importador. En síntesis, las actividades desarrolladas durante la ejecución de este proyecto han permitido la generación de información científica-técnica para el Estado a fin de que éste establezca y aplique las medidas regulatorias, administrativas y fiscalizadoras tendientes a asegurar la protección sanitaria y la biodiversidad de los ecosistemas naturales. Abstract: Local communities in some Asian, African and American countries, use plant toxins in fish poisoning for fishing activities; however, the effects of this practice on the particular wild fish assemblages is unknown. This study was conducted with the aim to investigate the effects of fish poisoning using Tephrosia candida, on freshwater fish diversity and abundance in streams at the boundary of the World Natural Heritage site, Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Sri Lanka. A total of seven field trips were undertaken on a bimonthly basis, from May 2013 to June 2014. We surveyed five streams with similar environmental and climatological conditions at the boundary of Sinharaja forest. We selected three streams with active fish poisoning practices as treatments, and two streams with no fish poisoning as controls. Physico-chemical parameters and flow rate of water in selected streams were also measured at bimonthly intervals. Fish were sampled by electrofishing and nets in three randomly selected confined locations (6 x 2 m stretch) along every stream. Fish species were identified, their abundances were recorded, and Shannon-Weiner diversity index was calculated for each stream. Streams were clustered based on the Bray-Curtis similarity matrix for fish composition and abundance.

Abstract: This study compared the parasites community in Corydoras ephippifer, Corydoras melanistius, Corydoras amapaensis and Corydoras spilurus from tributaries from the Amapari River in State of Amapá (Brazil). A total of 151 fish of these four ornamental species were examined, of which 66.2% were parasitized by one or more species, and a total of 732 parasites were collected. Corydoras ephippifer (91.2%) and C. spilurus (98.8%) were the most parasitized hosts, while C. amapaensis (9.6%) was the least parasitized. A high similarity (≅ 75%) of parasite communities was found in the host species.
