In his first three seasons at Marshall, •Kevin Long Long has led the women to a 24-26-7 record. With the addition of Long’s first recruiting class the Herd posted a 12-7 record, its highest win total in •Head Coach program history, as well as going 5-6 in Conference-USA, its best production •Fourth Season since joining the conference in 2002 and falling one game short of its first- •George Mason, 1993 ever C-USA tournament appearance. Since joining the MU staff Long has implemented an aggressive offensive system that has the Herd outshooting its opponents 767-727 over the past three years and a defense that allowed only 23 goals during the 2010 season, as well as posting seven shutouts. Long accepted the head position at Marshall following one year as the interim head coach during the 2008 season. Prior to MU, Long worked at Rider University, where he served as head coach from 2003-2008. Long left Rider as the Bronc’s winningest coach with a 37-48-12 record in five years. The Springfield, Virginia, native was hired as Rider’s third coach in the women’s soccer program history, March 2003. COACHING STAFF Long led the Broncs to record-setting victories in his first two seasons, 2003 (11) and 2004 (12). After a 12-win season in 2004, the Broncs qualified for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) playoffs. In that same season, he led Rider to the MAAC Championship Game, and in 2005, earned a first-round victory in the MAAC Championship tournament. The 2003 season was the first winning season for Rider, a season in which the Broncs won two tournaments. Rider was ranked 27th in the nation among scoring offenses, with a win-loss record ranking among the top-third in the nation. Long’s 2003 Broncs led the MAAC in shots, points, goals, goals per game and assists. Three of his players were honored for high academics. In 2004, six of his players earned All-MAAC honors, and three others were on the MAAC All-Academic team. Off the field, Long improved the Rider team’s grade point average nearly half a grade higher than in his entry year to a 3.2. Prior to Rider, he served as the assistant women’s soccer coach at North Carolina State University from 2001-2003. While with North Carolina State, Long taught physical education and he participated in the 2002 NCAA College Cup YES Clinician. From 1997-2001, Long coached women’s soccer at Randolph-Macon Woman’s college while also serving as the Director of Sports Information. While coaching at the school, Long had the only two winning seasons in program history. Also at Randolph-Macon, Long was part of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Committee where he was the Chair of the South Region. From 1998-2001, Long served as evaluator and education reference for over 30 coaches as Director of Travel Coaches for the Lynchburg United Soccer Club. Long will continue as an Olympic Development Program (ODP) Region I Senior Staff member where he coaches and trains teams to compete at the national level. Additional duties as senior staff member include selecting the regional team, training, coaching in competitions and promoting players to the national level in the Under-14 age group. From 1993 until 1998, he served as district and state head coach in Virginia, selecting teams, scheduling games and practices, attending and assisting with the Regional Selection Camp. In March 2008, he took an ODP 17-18 year-old elite women’s squad to Russia to compete against teams from Poland, Russia and Ukraine. Long guided his team to defeat Russia twice and won its bracket to advance to the semifinal round. His squad took the Bronze Championship and was the second youngest squad in the championship’s history to win its bracket. In 2007, Long was the head coach of an ODP U15 regional team who faced U-20 teams of Costa Rica, Panama, Chile and Mexico. His squad fell short to Mexico, 2-1, in the championship match. Long coaching in 2009 Long began his career in the Arlington County Public Schools, Virginia, as a health and physical education teacher and soccer coach. After college, Long taught three years at Kenmore Middle School before moving to Yorktown High School (1992-1999). Realizing the extra demands placed on student-athletes, the Buck STUDENT-ATHLETE PROGRAM Harless Student-Athlete Program, a division of Academic Affairs, was designed to provide support and guidance for the academic and personal development of MU’s student-athletes. The program was established in 1981 following a generous financial contribution from Mingo County businessman Buck Harless in order to help student-athletes prepare for life after college.
