When I Came to UTEP, My Objective Was to Build a Perennial Top-25 Football Program That Would Become the Talk of the Nation When I came to UTEP, my objective was to build a perennial top-25 football program that would become the talk of the nation. As I embark on my fourth season with the Miners, I believe that we are well on our way to achieving that goal! We have played in two bowl games and won 21 games since 2004. Fifteen of our games have been nationally televised. Writers from every major newspaper in the country have come to town to do stories on our team, and an ESPN College GameDay crew visited El Paso as well. The Miners have been nationally ranked in the month of November two of the last three years. We have had 30 players earn All-Conference honors during my tenure. Johnnie Lee Higgins, Jr. became UTEP’s all-time leading receiver, and Jordan Palmer broke all of the school’s passing and total offense records. A UTEP player has been chosen on the first day of the NFL Draft each of the last two years. Most importantly, 60 of our student-athletes have earned degrees since my arrival. My goal is to graduate 100 percent of our players because a degree opens doors down the road! I am very pleased to announce that our Miner Athlete Academic Center (MAAC) has been expanded from 2,000 square feet to 6,900 square feet in time for the 2007 season. The MAAC is in place to make sure all of our student-athletes reach their full potential academically. I hope you decide to be a part of a UTEP football program that is on the rise! You will play before over 40,000 enthusiastic fans in the Sun Bowl, which was recently chosen the “Best Stadium in Conference USA” by The Sporting News. The local newspapers and TV stations will follow your career on a daily basis. UTEP Football is the only show in town, and you will be a celebrity in the city. If it’s quality of life you’re after, you’ll certainly enjoy some of the best weather the nation has to offer in El Paso. The sun shines 318 days a year here. I invite you to read our 2007 media guide. Take a closer look at our school, program and community, and discover why UTEP is the place for you to continue your academic and athletic career!
