Curt 129 Online. K k JULY 2014 VOL. 26 #7 H WOWHALL.ORG KWOW HALL NOTESK g k IT’S JERRY’S BIRTHDAY On Friday, August 1, KLCC and Dead Air present an evening to celebrate Jerry Garcia featuring two full sets by the Garcia Birthday Band. Jerry Garcia, famed lead guitarist, songwriter and singer for The Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band, among others, was born on August 1, 1941 in San Francisco, CA. Dead.net has this to say: “As lead guitarist in a rock environment, Jerry Garcia naturally got a lot of attention. But it was his warm, charismatic personality that earned him the affection of millions of Dead Heads. He picked up the guitar at the age of 15, played a little ‘50s rock and roll, then moved into the folk acoustic guitar era before becoming a bluegrass banjo player. Impressed by The Beatles and Stones, he and his friends formed a rock band called the Warlocks in late 1964 and debuted in 1965. As the band evolved from being blues-oriented to psychedelic/experi- mental to adding country and folk influences, his guitar stayed out front. His songwriting partnership with Robert Hunter led to many of the band’s most memorable songs, including “Dark Star”, “Uncle John’s Band” and the group’s only Top 10 hit, “Touch of Grey”. Over the years he was married three times and fathered four daughters. He died of a heart attack CHATHAM COUNTY LINE in 1995.” On Sunday, July 27, the Community Tightrope also marks a return to Sound Fans have kept the spirit of Jerry Garcia alive in their hearts, and have spread the spirit Center for the Performing Arts proudly wel- Pure Studios in Durham, NC, where the and the music to new generations.

  • Formed in America During 1999, the Warlocks Produce a Relentless
Formed in America during 1999, The Warlocks produce a relentless, hypnotic wall of sound that suggests a collision between classic psychedelia, Krautrock and Velvet Underground style rock and roll. It's just what the head doctor orders if you wish to be an underground stateside phenomenon and that's exactly what The Warlocks became. Front man Bobby Hecksher grew up in the swamps of Tampa Bay, Florida where he was practically raised at a radio station owned his grandfather and where his mum also worked as a secretary. As a result Bobby was soon eating and breathing rock'n'roll on a daily basis. Bobby recalls, "My granddad was an inspiration. He created the radio station out of thin air. And from it all these nuggets of rock'n'roll came toward me". At sixteen his family left the swamps and moved to LA where Bobby soon found kindred spirits. He jammed with Beck, playing bass on Stereopathetic Soulmanure, Beck’s second independently released album. He hung out in the decadent atmosphere of the Mad Hatter club and moonlighted in the Brian Jonestown Massacre whilst also attending parties with legendary acid guru Timothy Leary, a potent cultural and creative mix that led to the formation of The Warlocks. Their debut album Rise & Fall (Bomp 2000) set out their template, allowing The Warlocks to build upon their reputation as a forceful live act. But it was the band's signing of a worldwide deal with Mute (in conjunction with City Rockers in the UK and with Birdman in America) that led to the release of Phoenix (2003) a record that raised their profile significantly.

Jamband expert Dean Budnick coined the term shortly thereafter to describe bands that perform long, improvised jams during their live shows. As these improvised shows have increased in popularity, they have become great spectacles, featuring light shows, filmed images, dancing, storytelling, and short plays. While the performance happening inside the arena deserves study, there is an equally interesting performance that takes place in parking lots before and after the shows.

Instructor Manual for Joe Stuessy & Scott Lipscomb’s Rock and roll: Its history and stylistic development (edited for use with the 7th edition text) Jay Dorfman Boston University Natalie Zelensky Colby College Scott D. Lipscomb University of Minnesota Dorfman, Zelensky, & Lipscomb Instructor Manual Rock and roll: Its history and stylistic development Stuessy & Lipscomb © 2012 by Pearson Education, Inc. p. ii Dorfman, Zelensky, & Lipscomb Instructor Manual Rock and roll: Its history and stylistic development Stuessy & Lipscomb Preface The purpose of this Instructor Manual is to facilitate the process of designing and teaching a rock history course using the text Rock music: Its history and stylistic development (7th edition, Prentice-Hall). In addition, the following pages provide significant food for thought, both for beginning instructors and for those who are quite experienced in teaching such a course. The following pages provide much more than a simple synopsis of the textbook content, though that forms an important component of the material. Rather, the Instructor Manual contains many innovative ideas to stimulate students – both inside and outside the classroom – and to help them develop an intimate understanding of the genre of music that, arguably, has had the greatest musical, cultural, and sociological impact during the twentieth and twenty- first century. With the exception of the Introduction, which provides a general set of teaching tips and suggests a means of structuring the course content, each chapter of the present text is subdivided into a consistent set of sections. The chapter overview provides a detailed outline of the content of each chapter, highlighting some of the most significant points addressed and, at times, providing supplemental information that will be of interest to students and instructors.
