This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

  • Alex Becerra
Alex Becerra Interview Alex Becerra – Storefront Show 10 - 24 August 2020 Karma International: For the storefront show you made 48 drawings of different jazz musicians. How did this project come about and how did you choose which musicians to portray? Alex Becerra: This specific project was in some ways a complete accident, it really started as an exercise in listening and exploring new music, past and present, in my studio. One of my passions outside of art making is consuming anything music and exploring albums that catch my attention via cover art, specific record labels and the rush of record digging. Last year, 2019, I found myself quite uninspired in the studio so I would pull jazz records out of my shelves and just take in the music. Music is very powerful and doesn't need much explanation beyond pure listening and I found myself enveloped in the sounds of jazz innovators such as Horace Tapscott, Cecil Taylor, Joe McPhee, Don Cherry, Noah Howard, amongst many others. While having the albums on repeat on my turntable—once one side was over I would get up and simply start the tracks all over again—I found myself reading the liner notes for more context of the players and sounds I was listening to and being totally fascinated by its cover art and design. So I started to sketch a few of my favorite jazz musicians that are much more associated with “free music” or the "avant-garde,” to me they asked more of the listener and in most cases passive listening while drinking a martini and washing the dishes is not what this music was about.

These are the words that Quincy Jones pronounced to present the preservation and restoration project of one of the musical monuments from the 20th century, the Montreux Jazz Festival Archives. From Aretha Franklin or Ray Charles to David Bowie or Prince, more than 5,000 hours of concerts have been recorded both in audio and video, since the creation of the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1967, by the visionary Claude Nobs. This collection contains many of the greatest names in middle and mainstream Jazz, including Errol Garner, Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Oscar Peterson to Herbie Hancock. Most of them composed great number of improvised jam sessions extremely rare. Miles Davis played his last performance, conducted by Quincy Jones in 1991. Many artists, like Marvin Gaye, recorded their first and only performance for television in Montreux. This collection of “live” music recordings, ranging from 1967-2012, with universal significance and intercultural dimensions has no direct equal in the world. This musical library traces a timeline of stylistic influences from the early styles of jazz to the present day. In 2007, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) and the Montreux Jazz Festival have decided to join forces to create a unique and first of a kind, high resolution digital archive of the Festival. 2.0 Nominator 2.1 Name of nominator (person or organization) THIERRY AMSALLEM (MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL FOUNDATION) 2.2 Relationship to the nominated documentary heritage MEMBER OF THE MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL FOUNDATION BOARD & OWNER AND CURATOR OF THE MONTREUX JAZZ FESTIVAL AUDIOVISUAL LIBRARY 2.3 Contact person(s) (to provide information on nomination) M.

March27 May 2001 2005 Getting the Band Back Together Appeared in - The Adelaide Review Cream Royal Albert Hall, London 5 May When it was first announced in the English press that the 1960s cult group Cream was reforming for four nights at the Royal Albert Hall there was an outpouring, you might say, of dairy metaphors. Would they be as fresh as they were thirty seven years ago? Would the old enmities between mem- bers sour the occasion? Would they blend, or remain somehow colloidal? Would they prove to be long life, or go to powder? Word of the reunion first came from the guitarist, Eric Clapton, when he blurted the news on Radio 2 back in December last year, and, when tickets went on sale in March, all four concerts sold out in a matter of hours. Since then, rumours have been rife of tickets on e-Bay going for upwards of two thousand quid. On the night I attended there were dozens of scalpers briskly pacing the circumference of the Albert Hall looking to buy, sell and trade the hottest ticket in London. There are many reasons why a Cream reunion should be such an event. Hailed as the first supergroup - meaning, the players came from already successful bands - Cream, modestly named by Clapton to indicate their calibre, were, in 1966, something completely different. Their first album, Fresh Cream, with a cover depicting the band in aviator leathers while the title graphics formed a white psychedelic droplet in the right hand corner, suggested a new hybrid - musicians with peerless blues credentials (Alexis Korner, John Mayall, Graham Bond’s Organisation) were also pick- ing up signals from the acid rock scene in the American West.

  • Michael Des Barres – Carnaby Street
Michael Des Barres is probably not a name that most readers will be familiar with, yet most everyone knows him. Des Barres has a new band, and a great new rocking album called Carnaby Street, that is not what most would expect from a 64 year old man. River City Tanlines is a three piece rock band from Memphis, led by singer/guitarist/songwriter Alicja Trout, who’s signature guitar is a white Gibson Flying V. Coast To Coast is River City Tanlines’ ( a river city tanline is what is also known as a farmer tan) second full length album since the band’s formation in 2004, and it’s the best thing that they have ever recorded. Jon Lord, best known as keyboardist and founding member of Deep Purple, passed away July 16 from a pulmonary embolism at 71. Lord is often overlooked and underappreciated for his achievements. He was responsible for introducing the Hammond organ to rock music as well as pioneering the fusion of classical and rock music. Lord was also a founding member of Whitesnake, and he had numerous side projects, but for now, we’ll be taking a look at the second incarnation of Deep Purple. Michael Des Barres – Carnaby Street Michael Des Barres has been a lead singer in several bands, including the early 70’s glam rock band Silverhead and the criminally overlooked hard rock band Detective, that was signed to Led Zeppelin’s Swan Song label in the mid‐70’s, and included ex‐members of Yes and Steppenwolf . The huge 80’s hit Obsession by Animotion, was a cover of Des Barres’ song that he had recorded with Holly Knight.
