We went through every emotion - shock, uncertainty, hope, disillusionment and of course the sadness of not being able to do our job and give festival-goers what they so badly want. But as in any major crisis, there is always a small glimmer of light that can bring unexpected strength and boost creativity. The soul of the MJF lies in reinventing its model over time while preserving the spirit so dear to our founder: music above all else, but also the warmth of the welcome and the art of sharing. So, with this creative energy, the entire MJF team spent months coming up with ideas, shaping new projects and accelerating a transformation process that was already in the pipeline. This passion, this self-sacrifice, which could even be described as tenacity, has always been guided by this simple but motivating leitmotiv that we cherish: nothing is impossible, you just have to believe. Mathieu Jaton, CEO Montreux Jazz Festival It is therefore with pride and emotion that we present to you, dear journalist friends, this 55th edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival. The journey has been full of challenges and this will certainly continue to be the case until the last day of the Festival. However, delivering the show fills us with joy, not only because it has been created in such special circumstances, but above all because it reveals more than ever who we are and what the Festival has been, is and will continue to be. Critical Studies in Improvisation / Études critiques en improvisation, Vol. 14, Nos. 2–3 Book Review Tele-Improvisation: Intercultural Interaction in the Online Global Music Jam Session, Springer Series on Cultural Computing Roger Mills Springer International Publishing, 2019 ISBN: 9783319710396 ISBN: 9783319710389 214 pages Reviewed by David Lane Author and trumpeter Dr. Roger Mills1 is a research associate and lecturer at the University of Technology Sydney. As musical director of the Ethernet Orchestra, an “Internet-based networked music ensemble exploring intercultural improvisatory collaboration,”2 Mills builds upon his experiential foundation to write his 2019 book Tele-Improvisation: Intercultural Interaction in the Online Global Music Jam Session (“Jam Session”). Jam Session navigates a range of conceptual and research domains including musicology, ethnography, improvisation, cognition, and information technology. Mills’s enthusiasm, ambition, and multidisciplinary perspective as a performer, collaborator, and academic permeate throughout Jam Session. The three dynamic interpersonal disciplines integrated throughout Jam Session (telematics, improvisational practice, and interculturalism) are each experiencing a blossoming of scholarship and practice. In Chapter 1, “Intercultural Interaction Tele-Improvisation: Inside the Online Global Music Jam Session,” Mills presents the key concepts and ideas explored in the book’s eight chapters. He begins with the historical practices and conceptual principles that ground his work and then broadly introduces the research practice that informs his theory of tele-improvised intercultural practice. His research practices employ a multimodal theoretical and analytical framework, grounded in models largely built upon the notions of conceptual metaphor and embodied cognition. These foundations set up his concluding discussions that relate to considerations for future research and scholarship.

  • On September 30Th 2014, Sam Fischer Popped a Message on Twitter
On September 30th 2014, Sam Fischer popped a message on Twitter. “Just booked a one way ticket to LA,” he tweeted. “Phwoar.” LA, it turned out, was less aroused. Things got pretty bleak, pretty quickly, and it wasn’t long before Sam had trouble making ends meet. But a mere five years, a couple of false starts and millions of streams later Sam has found his place, his voice, and his audience, both through his own naturally charismatic songs and those he’s written for artists like Ciara, Keith Urban and more. “I try to write uncomplicated, honest truths about myself,” he says of his own work. “Honesty and vulnerability should be celebrated, and if the last five years have taught me anything it’s that you should never be afraid to be your honest self.” Sam spent the earliest part of his life in Australia, on a small farm in the picturesque town of Grose Vale, just outside Kurrajong, just outside Sydney. “I used to come home from school,” Sam reports, “get my kit off and run around the farm naked.” School itself was an hour’s drive away meaning Sam spent plenty of time with his parents’ collection of three compact discs: Whitney Houston’s Bodyguard soundtrack, Michael Jackson’s HIStory, and a random rock compilation album. “That’s it right there on three pieces of plastic,” Sam laughs. “My entire musical education.” He joined the school choir (alongside a pre-fame Delta Goodrem — a fact Sam only recently discovered during a songwriting session with Goodrem two decades later) but the family relocated to Sydney when Sam was seven.

GERRY MULLIGAN DISCOGRAPHY GERRY MULLIGAN RECORDINGS, CONCERTS AND WHEREABOUTS by Gérard Dugelay, France and Kenneth Hallqvist, Sweden January 2011 Gerry Mulligan DISCOGRAPHY - Recordings, Concerts and Whereabouts by Gérard Dugelay & Kenneth Hallqvist - page No. 1 PREFACE BY GERARD DUGELAY I fell in love when I was younger I was a young jazz fan, when I discovered the music of Gerry Mulligan through a birthday gift from my father. This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

  • Sam Fischer & Demi Lovato New Single 'What Other People
SAM FISCHER & DEMI LOVATO NEW SINGLE ‘WHAT OTHER PEOPLE SAY’ OUT NOW SAM FISCHER ANNOUNCED AS YOUTUBE’S FIRST ‘ARTIST ON THE RISE’ FOR 2021 Following the huge success of his global smash hit This City and recent project Homework, Sam Fischer has teamed up with Demi Lovato to release his new single What Other People Say out now via RCA Records. Listen HERE. Written by Sam before his single This City became a hit, it was a song he always knew would be a duet and was blown away when Demi Lovato became the perfect person to accompany him on vocals. Written about a feeling of being alone and not wanting to let people down, the pairing takes two different lives and perspectives and unites them in one message of human experience, emotion and togetherness, so they are alone with one another in the song. It is a truly special track with a powerful, moving and relatable chorus and is the next official single release for Sam since This City. Sam says; “What Other People Say is a confession, realizing how far away you can get from who you are in an effort to be liked. It’s about the pressures of society and how getting caught up with the wrong things can change you.” Demi says; “This song is a reflection on what it’s like to lose who you truly are in an effort to please other people and society. Song Exploder Arlo Parks - Black Dog Episode 210 Hrishikesh: You’re listening to Song Exploder, where musicians take apart their songs, and piece by piece, tell the story of how they were made. My name is Hrishikesh Hirway. Both the song and the interview allude to suicide, so please be careful before listening. If you’re thinking about suicide, or if you have a friend who is, or if you just need someone to talk to right now, you can get support by calling the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) or by texting HOME to 741-741, which is the Crisis Text Line. If you’re outside of the U.S., check out the list of international hotlines at suicide.org. I’ll link to all of this on the Song Exploder website and in the episode show notes.
