Taking to the Montreux stage for the first time on 16 June 1968 for the festival’s second edition, Simone built a lasting relationship with Montreux Jazz Festival and its Creator and Founder Claude Nobs, which uniqueness, trust and electricity can be clearly felt on the recordings. Simone’s multi-faceted and radical story is laid bare on NINA SIMONE: THE MONTREUX YEARS. From Nina’s glorious and emotional 1968 performance to her fiery and unpredictable concert in 1976, one of the festival’s most remarkable performances ever witnessed, the collection includes recordings from all of her five legendary Montreux concerts – 1968, 1976, 1981, 1987 and 1990. Featuring rare and previously unreleased material from Claude Nobs’ private collection, Nina Simone devotees worldwide will be thrilled by the inclusion of the powerful “I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free,” poignant and fearless “Four Women” and Simone’s hauntingly beautiful performance of “Ne Me Quitte Pas.” A spine- tingling version of Janis Ian’s searing and potent “Stars,” which Simone covered for the very first time during her 1976 Montreux performance, sits alongside her bold and electrifying re-imagine of Bob Marley’s ballad “No Women No Cry” in 1990. The collection closes with the encore of Nina Simone’s final Montreux Jazz Festival 2LP Tracklist: concert and one of Simone’s most-loved and best-known record- SIDE ONE SIDE THREE ings, the exuberant “My Baby Just Cares For Me,” showcasing the 1. • Gerry Mulligan Discography
GERRY MULLIGAN DISCOGRAPHY GERRY MULLIGAN RECORDINGS, CONCERTS AND WHEREABOUTS by Gérard Dugelay, France and Kenneth Hallqvist, Sweden January 2011 Gerry Mulligan DISCOGRAPHY - Recordings, Concerts and Whereabouts by Gérard Dugelay & Kenneth Hallqvist - page No. 1 PREFACE BY GERARD DUGELAY I fell in love when I was younger I was a young jazz fan, when I discovered the music of Gerry Mulligan through a birthday gift from my father. This album was “Gerry Mulligan & Astor Piazzolla”. But it was through “Song for Strayhorn” (Carnegie Hall concert CTI album) I fell in love with the music of Gerry Mulligan. My impressions were: “How great this man is to be able to compose so nicely!, to improvise so marvellously! and to give us such feelings!” Step by step my interest for the music increased I bought regularly his albums and I became crazy from the Concert Jazz Band LPs. Then I appreciated the pianoless Quartets with Bob Brookmeyer (The Pleyel Concerts, which are easily available in France) and with Chet Baker. Just married with Danielle, I spent some days of our honey moon at Antwerp (Belgium) and I had the chance to see the Gerry Mulligan Orchestra in concert. After the concert my wife said: “During some songs I had lost you, you were with the music of Gerry Mulligan!!!” During these 30 years of travel in the music of Jeru, I bought many bootleg albums. One was very important, because it gave me a new direction in my passion: the discographical part. This was the album “Gerry Mulligan – Vol. 2, Live in Stockholm, May 1957”.

C.A.R. Presskit We could go the long way around and talk about German post- war music history such as “Krautrock” , “Kosmische” and “Jazz- Rock” and what these terms mean to us. But we could also just say: “Hello, we are C.A.R. from Cologne and we play music as we like it: A little bit acoustic, a little bit electronic; on a trip, but without a specific destination; intense but not brutal; spherical, but not arbitrary; excessive, yet precise. Does this help you? No? Alex Becerra Interview Alex Becerra – Storefront Show 10 - 24 August 2020 Karma International: For the storefront show you made 48 drawings of different jazz musicians. How did this project come about and how did you choose which musicians to portray? Alex Becerra: This specific project was in some ways a complete accident, it really started as an exercise in listening and exploring new music, past and present, in my studio. One of my passions outside of art making is consuming anything music and exploring albums that catch my attention via cover art, specific record labels and the rush of record digging. Last year, 2019, I found myself quite uninspired in the studio so I would pull jazz records out of my shelves and just take in the music. Music is very powerful and doesn't need much explanation beyond pure listening and I found myself enveloped in the sounds of jazz innovators such as Horace Tapscott, Cecil Taylor, Joe McPhee, Don Cherry, Noah Howard, amongst many others. While having the albums on repeat on my turntable—once one side was over I would get up and simply start the tracks all over again—I found myself reading the liner notes for more context of the players and sounds I was listening to and being totally fascinated by its cover art and design. So I started to sketch a few of my favorite jazz musicians that are much more associated with “free music” or the "avant-garde,” to me they asked more of the listener and in most cases passive listening while drinking a martini and washing the dishes is not what this music was about.

  • Close Readings of Metal Lyrics
International Journal of English Learning and Teaching Skills; Vol. 1, No. 4; ISSN : 2639-7412 (Print) ISSN : 2638-5546 (Online) POETRY AND LYRICS IN LANGUAGE ACROSS CENTURIES: CLOSE READINGS OF METAL LYRICS Anushka Banerjee Aishika Mukherjee Sayantan Chanda, Shivam Shubham B.Tech Second Year, Mayurakshi Dev Assistant Professor of English Department of Basic Science and Humanities, Institute of Engineering & Management, Kolkata Introduction Ever since its inception into the realm of music during the mid-70, heavy metal has been hailed as one of the most extreme genres in terms of loudness, machismo and lyrical content. Throughout its existence, heavy metal has been mired with controversies; critics slighted the music by shunning it off as being riddled with overblown adolescent theatrics, and conservative groups have accused the genre of being provocative due to its evil lyrical content. Inspite of all those adversities, heavy metal has held its stance as one of the most consistent forms of rock music. Metal music, through its efforts has reinstated the “ancient Indo-European spirit of vir”1 through a Romantic, Faustian form of music culture. This has staggered the general concept of mainstream music and has hence, since long, remained controversial. Heavy metal has never been popular with the mainstream masses, primarily due to the nature of the music. Amongst other things, lyrical content of the songs is one thing that is largely frowned upon and often considered to be one of the primary reasons why metal music has never struck a chord with the masses. But such allegations, while partly true, remain biased to a large extent.
