HISTORY IN LANCASHIRE NEWSLETTER NO. 24 (PRIMARY) AUTUMN TERM 2001 UPDATE The good news is that courses and consultancies are thriving, proving that History is alive and well in Lancashire! We are delighted with the increasing attendance on courses, and we do pay particular attention to course evaluations and suggestions. Indeed, many of you will have filled in the ‘History needs identification forms’ sent into schools at the end of October. The responses from these helped to inform future courses for 2002/2003 – a summary of which is enclosed at the end of this letter. The glossy history courses booklet should be with you in the first half of next spring term, and this will give you lots of details. Some of the forthcoming courses are already recruiting well, so please book your place as soon as possible. I have included an INS/1 for you to use for this purpose. Due to this interest, coupled with the requests from mainstream schools about SEN history provision, we are aiming to produce some helpful guidance. A specialist working group will ‘pool’ their experience and ideas, and put this inspiration into a planning framework. More details will follow in the Spring term. INTRANET/INTERNET/CLEO There has been a lot of excellent work done on the CLEO website (Cumbria and Lancashire Education Online). There are some wonderfully interactive pupil topics that have been produced – Susan Willoughby and Fiona Revell created the Pendle Witches units for KS2 and KS3. Maggy Simms is the CLEO Learning Consultant and she has spoken to some of you at a number of courses this year. We have worked closely together to provide lots of activities and both intranet and internet links to enhance and deepen historical skills and understanding. Have a look at the CLEO site at www.cleo.net.uk/cleo.content/home.csm. This also provides links to recommended internet sites, and other resources such as the Lancashire Grid for Learning which can be found on www.lancsngfl.ac.uk/. This site has information about History courses, and resources such as useful History and ICT plans. HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY As you may recall, the first Holocaust Remembrance Day was on Saturday 27th January of this year. The Government has announced that this event will happen each year to mark the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp. A number of school across Lancashire contributed work for a special exhibition that was held in January at the Woodlands Centre, Chorley. Pupils who worked on the display attended the opening of the exhibition alongside County Councillors and representatives of local communities including the Jewish community. It was a huge success, as Councillor Hazell Harding, Leader of Lancashire County Council commented: “Holocaust Remembrance Day will ensure that the horrendous crimes against humanity committed during the Holocaust will never be forgotten. I applaud schools for making resources available for pupils to understand the significance of the Holocaust, and to interpret it in this moving and meaningful exhibition.” Although the exhibition mostly contained examples of Key Stage 3 pupil work, there were two wonderful displays from the Primary phase – St John’s CE, Coppull, Chorley and St Michael’s CE, Kirkham.
