  • West Wing This Week Someone Who Is Not Only a Very Good Friend of Mine, but Has Been a Mentor Since I Was About 18
A Werribee Tigers promotion West Wing This week someone who is not only a very good friend of mine, but has been a mentor since I was about 18. He played 261 games with the Bulldogs. He has been very influential on my career and my life and he has a son playing AFL SW: Welcome Steve Wallis Tell us your story, you are a Leongatha boy. Wally: Yes at 16 I came down and played with the Bulldogs in the under 19 competition, so the club put me through school. I did accounting part time as well as school. I actually started work in Werribee, at Werribee Mazda, when I was 18. SW: You retired in 1996, how do you see the game these days in comparison to your days. Wally: We were only part time footballers, we only trained three times a week and usually late in the afternoon because most of us worked. I think the big change in recovery and the fitness of the players is the fulltime aspect. Being able to manage your body daily is a lot easier than when you had people working fulltime. I think they expect a lot more out of their bodies these days. The only thing that worries me watching Mitch, is wondering how long his body will hold up to the rigors of AFL . SW: You played for a long time and you played with some great players-EJ Whitten, Charlie Sutton- Only joking. Who were some of the best you played with? Wally: I was on the end of Kelvin Templeton’s career at the Bulldogs, he was a standout player.

To use another overblown metaphor, clubs are also the essential fabric out of which the rich, variegated tapestry of the game’s history has been woven.

  • 1908 Episode 12.Odt 16/05/19 Not All Events Went to Plan
Episode No: 12 Title: 1908 Now there are Ten Date Written: 1 Length Words: 6885 Date Recorded: TBD Length Time est at 125 WPM: Date Uploaded: TBD Length Time when recorded: Intro Music Welcome Hello and welcome to Grand Final History. I am Kieran Magee and in this episode we go back to 1908, the 12th year of the VFL, where the competition welcomed its first two expansion clubs, Richmond and University, creating a 10 team league. Carlton were looking to become the first club to complete a hat trick of premierships, St Kilda and South Melbourne would try to maintain their improved from and the remaining clubs wanted to make their mark on this expanded league. Background 1908 was a big year in sport internationally and locally. London hosted the 4th Modern Summer Olympics. The games took 6 months to complete1, a bit different to the 3 weeks we are familiar with today. Australian won one gold medal when the Wallabies Rugby Union team, already on tour in the UK in 1908, beat Britain, represented by the Cornwall Rugby Team2. In the other sporting highlight of the year, Melbourne would host Australian Football’s 50th anniversary Jubilee Carnival. More about that later. In Sydney, where the VFL would tell us the Australian game was thriving, the big news was the establishment of a professional Rugby League competition, breaking away from the amateur Rugby Union3. One key factor in the emergence of Rugby league was the demand by working class players for payment to recognise the commitment they made to the game and the need for financial assistance when recovering from injuries.

Unforgettable Characters in Football A series of articles written by H.A.de Lacy during the 1941 VFL football season and published in The Sporting Globe. Peter Burns Henry “Tracker” Young Albert Thurgood Henry “Ivo” Crapp Dick Lee Syd and Gordon Coventry Roy Park Jack Worrall Ivor Warne-Smith Hughie James Percy Parratt & Jimmy Freake Horrie Clover Roy Cazaly Alan and Vic Belcher Vic Cumberland Tom Fitzmaurice Rod McGregor Dave McNamara Albert Chadwick PETER BURNS Greatest Player Game Has Produced May 3, 1941 – https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/180297522 When I walked into the South Melbourne training room on Thursday night and asked a group of old timers, "Did any of YOU fellows play with Peter Burns when he was here?'' work stopped. Billy Windley left off lacing a football. "Joker" Hall allowed the compress on Eric Huxtables ankle to go cold, and Jim O'Meara walked across the room with a pencil sticking out of the side of his mouth, while one of the present-day Southern stalwarts stood half naked Waiting for the guernsey that Jim carried away in his hand. I had struck a magic chord collectively and individually all three said play with Peter — he was the greatest player the game has produced and a gentleman in all things." Well it was certainly nice to have them unanimous about It. and so definite too. I wanted Information and I got it in one hot blast of enthusiasm. Peter Burns — what a man; what a footballer, they all agreed. Today in the South Melbourne room working side by side at the moulding of a younger side.

Coincidentally, I joined AFL Tasmania as a Director at virtually the same time Andrew became Chief Executive and during my seven years as Chairman of AFL Tasmania our team has worked very closely with Andrew, Gillon McLachlan and other members of the AFL executive management team. The facts speak for themselves; Andrew Demetriou has been an outstanding national leader of our game and in my opinion he has also provided exceptional support and advice to Tasmanian football through AFL Tasmania. The first time I met with Andrew he was very clear about the fact that the AFL must prioritise its development activities in Queensland and New South Wales. The growth of the game in these two northern states will ultimately be to the benefit of a traditional football state such as Tasmania.
