The fair will be held at the Puyallup Fairgrounds in Puyallup, Wash. This sustainable-living event will feature keynote speakers and experts on organic gardening, real food, modern homesteading, renewable energy and more. The MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR is family-oriented and will have activities for all ages, including more than 120 hands-on demonstrations and workshops. Editors from Mother Earth News and sister publications Grit, Natural Home & Garden and The Herb Companion, as well as experts from across the country, will present sessions. The fair also will feature an eco-friendly marketplace; a seed swap; artisan food tastings; children’s activities; organic local food and beverages; outdoor equipment and livestock demonstrations; and live music in conjunction with the Americana Music Association. Seven-Star Events will manage “greening” and waste-reduction duties for the fair. Sessions will be led by magazine editors, academics, extension professionals, leaders and members of nonprofit organizations, and everyday people who practice what they preach. Eco-friendly Shopping Pavilion Approximately 250 artisans and vendors will sell goods ranging from locally made crafts and foods to solar energy systems and outdoor power equipment. Exhibitors are located both indoors and outdoors. Community Seed Swap Sponsored by Southern Exposure Seed Exchange, Organic Seed Alliance and Seed Savers Exchange Seed swaps help preserve plant biodiversity. Attendees are encouraged to bring their best heirloom veggie or other unique saved seeds to the seed swap and trade with other gardeners. Beginners are welcome, and attendees don’t have to donate seeds to participate. Seed donors will receive a free MOTHER EARTH NEWS tote bag. The sponsors will host Q&A sessions as well. Children’s Activities The children’s “Tree House” tent will offer free activities, including arts and crafts, eco-friendly DIY projects, and story time. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Antique Tractor Retrospective The MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR pays homage to our agricultural history with The Antique Tractor Retrospective, spanning 20 years. See the evolution of design, from an unstyled 1936 John Deere B to a sleek 1955 Oliver Super 66. Hosted by The Rainier Two-Cylinder Club. Media Room The MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR will host an area for credentialed media to use for interviews, blogging, uploading files and relaxing. The room will have electrical outlets to charge equipment, a hard-wired Internet connection and a secure wireless connection. Light refreshments will be available. Seven-Star Inc., the event production partner, will organize and manage landfill diversion and eco- product conversion for the MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR. With the help of volunteers and event staff, Seven-Star Inc. is able to divert record-breaking amounts of waste from ending up in landfills. Plus, MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR works with vendors and event suppliers to offer green alternatives. About Our Efforts • Everything that can be recycled at the event is recycled. Volunteers and staff are available to assist attendees in this process. • Every plate, bowl, cup, spoon, knife, fork, straw and napkin used is 100-percent biodegradable and will be collected with all food scraps to be composted. • E-waste collection is available to participants for recycling and reuse of their electronic devices. • Event signs have been designed with reuse in mind. Each piece is made from environmentally friendly materials. • All MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR collateral material is made with recycled materials. What You Can Do • Carpool to the show. • Use recycling and composting bins at the event. • Bring your own reusable water bottle to the event. • Spread the message! MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR’S Track Record At the first fair held last September in Seven Springs, Pa., 100 percent of cardboard was recycled, about 5,100 pounds. The event recycled 680 pounds of glass, plastics and aluminum, and 10,550 pounds of compost was diverted from the landfill to be processed into garden compost. Approximately 370 gallons of graywater were collected and diverted from the local water table. .
