A History of Mixed-Race Women in the United States During the Early Twentieth Century

Abstract Often homogenised into broader narratives of African-American history, the historical experience of mixed-race women of black-white descent forms the central research focus of this thesis. Examining the lives of such women offers a valuable insight into how notions of race, class, gender and physical aesthetics were understood, articulated and negotiated throughout the United States during the early-twentieth century. Through an analysis of wide-ranging primary source material, from letters, diaries and autobiographies to advertisements, artwork and unpublished poetry, this thesis provides an interdisciplinary contribution to the field of Critical Mixed Race Studies, and African- American history. It builds on existing interpretations of the Harlem Renaissance by considering the significance of mixed-racial heritage on the formation of literature produced by key individuals over the period. Moreover, this research reveals that many of the visual and literary sources typically studied in isolation in fact informed one another, and had a profound impact on how factors such as beauty, citizenship, and respectability intersected, and specifically influenced the lives of mixed-race women. -

Muslim Women's Pilgrimage to Mecca and Beyond
Muslim Women’s Pilgrimage to Mecca and Beyond This book investigates female Muslims pilgrimage practices and how these relate to women’s mobility, social relations, identities, and the power struc- tures that shape women’s lives. Bringing together scholars from different disciplines and regional expertise, it offers in-depth investigation of the gendered dimensions of Muslim pilgrimage and the life-worlds of female pilgrims. With a variety of case studies, the contributors explore the expe- riences of female pilgrims to Mecca and other pilgrimage sites, and how these are embedded in historical and current contexts of globalisation and transnational mobility. This volume will be relevant to a broad audience of researchers across pilgrimage, gender, religious, and Islamic studies. Marjo Buitelaar is an anthropologist and Professor of Contemporary Islam at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. She is programme-leader of the research project ‘Modern Articulations of Pilgrimage to Mecca’, funded by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Manja Stephan-Emmrich is Professor of Transregional Central Asian Stud- ies, with a special focus on Islam and migration, at the Institute for Asian and African Studies at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany, and a socio-cultural anthropologist. She is a Principal Investigator at the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies (BGSMCS) and co-leader of the research project ‘Women’s Pathways to Professionalization in Mus- lim Asia. Reconfiguring religious knowledge, gender, and connectivity’, which is part of the Shaping Asia network initiative (2020–2023, funded by the German Research Foundation, DFG). SNOWY MINNESOTA WOODS - 1977 - NIGHT 1 The roar of some terrifying creature. We are close to the BOY, age twelve, racing through the snowy dark. He is terrified. He manages to glance back behind him. In a shaky dark swirl we catch glimpses of what appear to be animals, black against the blue snow, chasing after him. In a glimpse of light their eyes flash, revealing TWO WOLVES - tearing through the moonlit woods. The boy tries desperately to pick up speed, dodging fallen limbs and rocks along his way. Strangely, he’s barefoot, in a thin tank-top and pajama bottoms, running through a dark, eerie landscape. Up ahead he sees a way to veer off from the path and dip down along an incline. He takes the turn, tearing through brush as he descends along the side of a hill into a slight recess, hoping to drop out of sight. Through the black mesh of trees he spots the wolves running past. -

Dan Țăranu1 THE AVATARS OF THE MARGINAL MAN Abstract: At present, terms such as “margin”, “marginal” and “marginality” are part of a lexical series fuelled by ideological tension. A structure of partisan walls has been built around the concept of marginal, one which enables the perpetuation and acknowledgement of difference and, last but not least, which allows us to unmask the – ubiquitous – mechanisms through which marginalisation is established. Although I do not set out to prove that these strategies of recovering the marginal are provincially dogmatic and revengeful, it must be noted that they do treat a long line of sociological traditions on the marginal man superficially. Rooted in Simmel’s essay on the stranger and redefined by Robert E. Park and Everett Stonequist, this direction of analysis2 is rarely the object of serious interest in cultural studies. In most approaches, marginal occurs in free variation with marginalised, and what promises to be the analytical fruitfulness, recovery and understanding of difference, is often converted into a relationship that is unilaterally determined and imitates the form, but not always the subtlety of Hegel’s master-slave dialectic. The term “marginal”, as it is used in classical sociology - difficult, diffuse and hard to manipulate, centred on filtering a cultural situation through the conscience, emotions and intellect of an actor is substituted with a passive entity that is (directly or insidiously) rejected by an agent (sketchily presented). Keywords: marginality, literary canon, cultural studies, biculturalism, in-betweenness state. I will start with a rather trivial quote that claims to be a mission statement for the project of cultural studies: “Cultural studies assume that capitalist industrial societies are societies divided unequally along ethnic, gender, generational and class lines. -

We’ll start by talking about your childhood a little bit. Dr. Pamela Shipp ’69: Ooh, I love talking about my childhood. I was just really a blessed child. I grew up in East St. Louis. I was born in St. Louis and our family ... Well, then we lived in East St. Louis, in a very large family. My mom’s the youngest of 10 kids, really 11 but one died, so she says 10, and we go with 10, and hopefully ... So, one of the good things about growing up in a large family, for me, I always felt loved, and I always felt that I belonged, and it was just absolutely refreshing and sometimes comical because when we moved ... PS: I moved to Denver with my mom who took a job in Colorado and we moved to Denver where I discovered that everyone didn’t love me, and of course, I’m just a little kid but still I’m anticipating that everyone is going to want me and love me and be there for me, which was not the case when we moved and I noticed that in elementary school. So that was a nice kind of ... I think it was a nice understanding that I got to have very early that I still had the foundation of knowing that I was loved and lovable but knowing that there are people that are not going to love me, and I learned that at an early age, so that’s why I think that was kind of good for me. -

The queerness of the friendships I will explore in this project is, in part related to, but not co-extensive with, the sexual orientation of its participants. In all of the pairings I examine, at least one, if not both, of the friends is non- heterosexual. However, what makes the “queerness” of each of these friendships is not only the orientation of its participants, but the relationship’s exceeding of the conventional boundaries and definitions of friendships.
