Tweets from Pope Francis 312 Ridgedale Avenue East Hanover, New Jersey 07936 BULLETIN June 13, 2021 ITALIAN NUN SLAIN BY 3 TEEN GIRLS ‘FASCINATED BY SATAN’ BEATIFIED AS A MARTYR An Italian nun who was stabbed 19 times more than two decades ago by three teenage girls apparently fasci- nated by Satan was honored Sunday with beatification as a martyr of the Roman Catholic Church. Hours before the beatification ceremony in northern Italy, Pope Francis praised Sister Maria Laura Mainetti and described her killers as “prisoners of evil.” Beatification is the last formal step in the Catholic Church before possible sainthood. Italian news reports about the June 6, 2000 slaying in the town of Chiavenna said the defendants during in- terrogation recounted that the nun asked God to forgive her attackers even as they assaulted her. After serving sentences ranging from 8 1/2 to 12 years and four months, the convicted attackers were released from prison. Two were age 16 and the other was 17 when the Catholic nun was slain. They were prosecuted as minors. Addressing the faithful in St. Peter’s Square during his traditional Sunday remarks, Francis spoke of the beati- fication, saying Mainetti, who belonged to the religious congregation of the Daughters of the Cross, was slain “by three girls influenced by a satanic sect. Cruelty.” According to other Catholic clergy in the town, Mainetti went out of her convent late at night after receiving a call from one of the girls who said she became pregnant after being raped and needed help. Prosecutors later described that as an invented story to lure the nun from the convent. The nun was struck repeatedly by a brick or a stone, then stabbed 19 times in an unlit alley. Francis said Mainetti “loved young people more than anything else, and she loved and forgave these same girls, prisoners of evil.” The pope said the nun’s legacy was her “life program — do every little thing with faith, love and enthusiasm.” The alley where the 60-year-old nun was slain is now a pilgrimage site. Brought to the Chiavenna sports sta- dium for the beatification ceremony was a bloodstained stone found where she was slain. Scribblings about the devil were reportedly found in the teens’ writings, prompting prosecutors to hypothesize that fascination about Satan was the apparent motive for the killing. Associated Press. • Causes Des Saints : Sœur Maria Laura Mainetti, Martyre Du Satanisme

  • Pope Brings Five People Closer to Sainthood
Pope brings five people closer to sainthood Pope Francis advanced the sainthood causes of three men and two women, including an Italian nun who was brutally murdered by three teenage girls who claimed it had been a satanic sacrifice. The pope signed the decrees June 19 during a meeting with Cardinal Angelo Becciu, prefect of the Congregation for Saints’ Causes. The Vatican published the decrees the same day. The pope recognized the martyrdom of Sister Maria Laura Mainetti, a 60-year-old member of the Congregation of the Daughters of the Cross, who had been killed “in hatred of the faith” when she was murdered June 6, 2000, the sixth day of the sixth month. The three girls had planned to stab her six times each to indicate the biblical “number of the beast.” Born near Milan in 1939, Sister Mainetti had dedicated her life to helping those excluded by society, particularly drug addicts, juvenile delinquents, the poor and sex workers. Her killers had known Sister Mainetti from catechism class when they were younger. When they ambushed and attacked her, she prayed for the girls, asking that God forgive them. The young women were found guilty of murder with reduced sentences because the court determined they were partially insane at the time of the crime. Except in the case of candidates officially recognized as martyrs, the Catholic Church usually requires a miracle attributed to a candidate’s intercession as a condition for beatification. Even for martyrs, a second miracle is required for canonization. Among the other decrees signed June 19, the pope recognized the miracle needed for the beatification of Jose Gregorio Hernandez Cisneros, a Venezuelan doctor born in 1864.

  • Modelizing Epistemologies: Organizing Catholic Sanctity from Calendar-Based Martyrologies to Today's Mobile Apps
Semiotica 2021; 239: 201–223 Jenny Ponzo* and Gabriele Marino Modelizing epistemologies: organizing Catholic sanctity from calendar-based martyrologies to today’s mobile apps https://doi.org/10.1515/sem-2019-0089 Received August 2, 2019; accepted September 12, 2019; published online February 11, 2021 Abstract: The Catholic concept of “sanctity” can be thought of as a “cultural unit” (Eco) composed of a wide variety of “grounds” (Peirce) or distinctive features. The figures of individual saints, i.e., tokens of sanctity, are characterized by a partic- ular set of grounds, organized and represented in texts of different genres. This paper presents a semiotic study of texts seeking to offer an encompassing view of “sanctity” by listing all the saints and supplementing their names with a short description of their lives emphasizing the grounds characterizing each of them. The analysis focuses on a seminal liturgical text, the Martyrologium Romanun (1584–2004), and the first official encyclopedia of saints, the Bibliotheca Sanctorum (1961–2013), as well as a sample of digital texts and media such as websites and mobile apps. While the first text offers a dogmatic perspective on sanctity and saintly figures and the second offers a historical and culturological one, websites succeed in reconciling the two paradigms into a single syncretic form of interactive fruition in which the more up-to-date encyclopedic model subsumes the tradi- tional calendar one and, in the case of apps, adds a glocal dimension, enhancing situated cognition. The analysis shows that the introduction of the encyclopedic genre and subsequent proliferation of digital repertoires is connected to a shift in the Catholic “episteme” (Foucault) of sanctity and a growing tendency to consider saints as not (only) religious characters and objects of cult, but (also) as historical individuals and components of a culture and, consequently, as suitable objects of critical discourse.
