Fairfax's Rural Press in December 199$. (2) Irish businessman Tony O'Reilly bought Provincial Newspapers (Qld) from Murdoch, who sold it after TPC pressure. PNQ was renamed Australian Provincial Newspapers, and APN Holdings Ltd was floated in 1992. 48.1% of APN Holdings Ltd is controlled by Kelsal Pty. Ltd., which is itself owned by Ligon 157 (O'Reilly family trust) and Independent Newspapers PLC of Ireland, of which O'Reilly is chairman. He was a director of the Washington Post and Bankers' Trust, chief executive of the food group Heinz and an unsuccessful bidder for the Fairfax Group in 1991.
