Murder hearing told of Mob texts . Murder hearing told of Mob texts The Tuesday, 19 August MURDER ACCUSED: Quentin Duff, accused of murdering his partner, during depositions hearing at Porirua District Court. Dog, can you come to the pad? My Mrs is dead. Duff, a patched Mongrel Mob member, is accused of beating his partner of eight years, Bronwyn Aroha Whakaneke, 33, with a metal scaffolding pipe before dumping her outside a bus at the mob headquarters in Waitangirua. The text message, allegedly sent by murder accused Quentin Duff to a Mongrel Mob associate soon after Duff's partner's death, was among several revealed in Porirua District Court yesterday. Duff, who has yet to enter a plea, appeared expressionless in court yesterday for a depositions hearing. Her naked and battered body was found on January 8. Phone records in court revealed that before police were called, Duff text-messaged a Mongrel Mob associate: . It will determine if he will face trial... Duff later text-messaged the same associate from the police station: Dog, I'm examining at a lot of jail now. dog, can you come to the pad? My Mrs is dead. Tell me you didn't bro. The associate replied: I want to believe you didn't do it. Duff replied: I'm in a lot of sh. Getting no response he added: Come on, bark back. at the moment.. Another text from Duff to the associate said: Dog, I'm sorry I just f. That's all I can say..... Police prosecutor Claire Boshier told the court Duff and Ms Whakaneke had argued before Duff inflicted the fatal injuries. Police prosecutor Claire Boshier told the court Duff and Ms Whakaneke had argued before Duff inflicted the fatal injuries. Drag marks on the gang pad floor and gravel marks on Ms Whakaneke's face and clothing were consistent with being dragged from the headquarters to the bus, Ms Boshier said. The pipe, covered in blood, had fingerprints on it. Ms Boshier told the court Duff admitted resulting in the fatal injuries and told police he had been trying to sleep when Ms Whakaneke punched him in the nose. The first of three videotaped police interviews with Duff was played for the court. During the interview Duff said Ms Whakaneke had left the gang pad about midnight. He then said he locked up, went to sleep and found her body in the morning. She just said she was going to wait for her ride, Duff told police. They had not argued and when she left she was in a happy mood . Three witnesses who gave evidence to the court had name suppression. Justices of the peace Ian Symonds and Bernardine Poole remanded Duff in custody. The hearing continues today. Maori land blocks frustrated surfers' access . Maori land blocks frustrated surfers' access - Wednesday, 20 August MIKE SCOTT/ WORST NIGHTMARES: Taranaki surfers' worst nightmares are coming true, as access to premium surf breaks is cut off as fences go up on Maori family land. Taranaki surfers' worst nightmares are coming true, as access to premium surf breaks is cut off. In the past two weeks, Maori family land, right on the coast, has had 2m high gates and a fence erected around it, blocking access to the world-class breaks. Surf breaks at Mangahume and Sky Williams, just south of Opunake, have become the latest casualties. Mrs Hohaia said she did not want to restrict access to surfers, but wanted to protect three urupa (cemeteries) on the land. Owners Teresa and Donald Hohaia, of New Plymouth, said they knew nothing about the gates and fence. I know nothing about it, she told the . It wasn't done with my knowledge. Surfers say the South Taranaki District Council should be doing more to secure beach access for the future. Mrs Hohaia said other family members who did not live in the region were involved with the land, but she could not provide contact details. I think that it is negligent that they are not doing it, Mr Arthur said. Surfer Wayne Arthur said the STDC should be ensuring coastal access for everyone. The marketing of Surf Highway 45 is a South Taranaki initiative, and they are not managing the assets at all. The lockout could affect tourism in the area. Mr Arthur said surfers were facing constant battles to retain access to surf spots as coastal property was sliced up and sold off. They have got a gem, but it needs a bit more polishing than what they are doing. If we have got some sort of historical access, then the council should be doing whatever it can to secure that for the future. Local surfer Craig Williamson said the STDC should negotiate for access when approval for land to be subdivided was given. He was devastated to see the fence and gates blocking access to

page 1 / 18 The House of Oojah AudioBooks New Zealand Kiwi Audio CD mp3 - www.Audio-Books.co.nz

the two breaks. Once it is gone, you can't get it back, Mr Williamson said. I was heading down for a surf, and found I couldn't get down there. I'm gutted, absolutely gutted. Surf Highway 45's attraction would be lost if nobody could get to the surf. People from all over the world are surfing down there in the summer, Mr Williamson said. Surfers were grateful to farmers who, for years, had allowed them to cross their land for access to surf breaks. Surfers were grateful to farmers who, for years, had allowed them to cross their land for access to surf breaks. An Opunake surfer, who did not want to be named, was not concerned at the loss of easy access. He said there were other routes to the breaks. It just means I get to enjoy surfing there without the crowd. STDC Mayor Ross Dunlop said the region was renowned for its surf breaks. When possible, the council negotiated access to the beach with developers, but it might not be in the same place as before. In the past access across private land was at the land owner's discretion. I would be very concerned if some of our popular surfing spots are being cut off from the public, Mr Dunlop said. We want to be creating more, rather than reducing them. Rerun for rally that led to riot . Rerun for rally that led to riot and NARELLE SUISTED - Wednesday, 20 August Police are bracing for hundreds of Canterbury University students to defy authorities and converge on in a rogue Undie 500 car rally this weekend. Last year, 69 people were arrested and charged over rioting in Dunedin streets the following day the rally arrived in the city. An anonymous Canterbury University student created a dummy student email address to circulate two emails on Saturday and yesterday, detailing how this year's unsanctioned event will run. The year before, 25 of the 56 students arrested for disorderly behaviour over the Undie 500 weekend were from . The anonymous email from the self-styled Undie 500 master said: There will be drinking, along with theme cars and costumes! An entire Dunedin courtroom was set aside to deal with students arrested over last year's rioting. Two students intending to go to the event told they expected the controversial rally to be at least as big as those of the last two years. This year's event will proceed despite the urging of student and civic leaders, the university and police. The last of those charged cleared the court system only last week. It's bad for the city (Dunedin), bad for our reputation and we don't need it. All the Undie 500 does is cause us a considerable amount of grief, Dunedin and Clutha police area commander Inspector Dave Campbell said. We believe we're well-prepared. Police were caught out by events last year and would have a zero tolerance approach to any more trouble, he said. The Undie 500 was previously organised by the Canterbury University Engineering Students' Society (Ensoc). We certainly have a significant number of staff rostered on this weekend. Ensoc and the Students' Association (UCSA) tried to organise another event this year but gave up when Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin refused to support their proposals. Since 1989, students have bought cars valued under $500, decorated them to a theme and driven to Dunedin, stopping at designated pubs along the way. Yesterday, Walker said he did not know who was behind the alternative event and did not support it. In July, when Ensoc president Graeme Walker formally withdrew support for the event, he warned that an alternative event would go ahead regardless. This individual has basically organised the event themselves. We have been working really hard this year to protect the Undie 500 name and we don't want to compromise that at all, Walker said. It's still our students and we're trying to make sure they don't go down, Goldstein said. UCSA president Michael Goldstein said he did not want to talk about the event because we don't want any publicity given to it . People have just said since this was cancelled, everyone will still go, Alex Crossan, 18, said. Two first-year students living at Christchurch's University Hall said they were not worried by the lack of support from student leaders. He expected hundreds more from the university's five other halls as well as student flats to go on the rally. He expected hundreds more from the university's five other halls as well as student flats to go on the rally. Crossan and Alan Fallon, 19, said they had taken advantage of a special on 24 packs of beer and bought four boxes to drink between the four passengers on their

way to Dunedin. They had a designated driver who would not be drinking, they said. We don't really know what to expect, Fallon said. He said Otago University students were finishing exams this weekend so they will be having big parties . Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin said the event was not welcome, but the Dunedin City Council was powerless to stop it. If students want to put their future careers at risk by indulging in something like this ... then that's their choice, Chin said. If they conduct themselves in a way that is unlawful, then the police are ready, he said. A spokesperson for Canterbury University said the university did not support the unofficial event. We deplore any anti-social and illegal behaviour, and would like to remind students of the consequences this can have in their personal and professional lives, the spokesperson said. Director of Student Services at Otago University David Richardson said the university would respond to any situation as appropriate at the time. Whatever the situation, the safety and wellbeing of students and staff are paramount, Richardson said. Meanwhile, the Students Against Driving Drunk (SADD) group will hold its national street appeal across the country on Friday, the day the rally begins. SADD regional co-ordinator Jessica Stringer hoped the students would use sober drivers. We hope the students in the Undie 500 will be responsible in the decisions they make. Police inquiries show the man's money card was used on August 12, 15 and 16 in Auckland; the last time being at an ATM machine on Newton Rd at 11. At this point there's nothing to suggest the person who used the card was anyone other than the deceased, as there was money and the card in his wallet which was in his pocket when he was recovered from the water in the Viaduct. The improvement in the interest. The committee report called for more streamlining local authority processes and releasing suitable land on to the market.nz figures came as the parliamentary commerce select committee issued a report suggesting measures to address the affordability issue. It's a classic dynamic, he said. ANZ chief economist Cameron Bagrie said the timing of the report was ironic. It's a bit of a case of Murphy's law. Ironically, as soon as you start talking about those off-the-wall schemes it's normally when the market starts to correct itself. Bagrie said the improvement in affordability was expected. Bagrie said the improvement in affordability was expected. The economy was six months into an adjustment phase and it had a long way to run. It's not flash if you're an existing property owner, but the end game here is that house prices are going to become more affordable, he said. Bagrie predicted Reserve Bank Governor Alan Bollard would cut interest rates at the next monetary policy announcement on September 11 and again in October and December. The cuts would help but most people were on longer-term fixed interest rates. Editor of interest.co.nz Bernard Hickey said while the improvement was encouraging, it was not time to ease off on Government measures. You could argue instead of being more affordable, it's slightly less unaffordable, he said. There is plenty of room for local and central government to change the way they do

things to make it easier for people to buy and live in houses. Hickey agreed Bollard would cut rates three times before the end of the year, but housing prices would have to fall as much as 30 per cent before affordability returned to the 43.9 per centseen five years ago. We're so far away from affordable that a couple of months of improvements isn't going to make that much difference to most people, Hickey said. PM's husband to read tribute at guide's funeral . Riot cops quell fighting in inner-city mall Friday, 22 August Riot police had to control fights among a crowd of almost 200 people as they tried to arrest a suspected thief wielding nunchaku in Wellington's Manners Mall. Police called in a specialist support team wielding long batons and shields to the mall about 4pm yesterday after a man suspected of shoplifting produced nunchaku - a martial arts weapon - and began attacking police and staff in a clothes shop. Holly Payne, from Newtown, said when two police officers arrived, the man reached into his bag, pulled out the nunchaku and began swinging at police. Witnesses said the man, in his mid-20s, was locked inside Loaded after staff suspected he tried to take a jacket. Several staff locked themselves in a back room and the man was left in the shop while police waited for back-up. He looked like he knew what he was doing with them. While police attempted to keep people back, youth gangs took the opportunity to start fights, she said. Alysha Collier, 18, said Manners Mall was packed from one end to the other with spectators, and police had blocked access at both ends. Kazz Coughlan-Briggs, 16, said when riot police arrived, the crowd yelled for them to Taser the man, who was still in the shop. They just beat up anyone who looks at them the wrong way. Sergeant Mark Oliver said while police were speaking to the man, another group not connected with him gathered in the mall and small pockets of fighting broke out . The police were too scared to go in there, they kept going up to the door and then he'd start swinging again, she said. Witnesses said the drama was just another day in Manners Mall , where daily acts of violence were expected. A police negotiator entered the store and spoke to the man, who was then arrested and taken to Wellington police station. - With . Heavy snow on way for South Island and IAN STEWARD - Monday, 18 August Heavy snow is on the way for parts of the South Island which have so far escaped some of the deepest falls in more than a decade. With snow still lying thickly on higher ground in many western and southern areas yesterday, the MetService issued yet another heavy snow warning this time for Canterbury, Marlborough, Otago and Southland. One of the party was buried in the avalanche by 2m of snow but his fellow skiers were able to dig him out. The warning came as a group of heli-skiers was struck by an avalanche on Temple Peak, 50km north-west of Queenstown, yesterday afternoon. Police later said the man's condition was satisfactory. The man, a Christchurch resident in his mid-30s, was flown to hospital with suspected hypothermia. The hardest-hit areas are likely to be Banks Peninsula and Christchurch's Port Hills, the coastal hills of Otago and Dunedin's hill suburbs, with 15cm to 20cm of snow predicted down to 300m by 9am tomorrow and smaller amounts settling to 100m or to sea-level. The MetService says very cold southerly air is expected to spread north today with the snow level dropping from about 300m this morning to around sea level tonight. It's looking like snow close to sea level in the east of the South Island, for Christchurch, and that'll be more the evening and overnight, but Dunedin and Otago will probably be getting close to that during the day. Severe weather forecaster Ian Miller said last night the polar outbreak would peak tonight over Canterbury and should be over by the middle of tomorrow, although conditions would be cold enough that snow from heavy flurries would quickly accumulate. Clear skies on Wednesday means it'll be pretty icy with snow on the ground. It's just one burst, so conditions will improve from the south early Tuesday. The large volume of snow in the South Island's mountains is a skiers' delight but is also increasing the risk of avalanches. State Highway 94 from Te Anau to Milford Sound was closed as a result of snow yesterday and State Highway 80 from Pukaki to Mount Cook was restricted to vehicles with chains. We are strongly advising people not to go on tracks in Nelson Lakes National Park, and that includes lakeside tracks, due to the avalanche risk, the weather conditions, and risk of tree fall due to snow, DOC Nelson-Marlborough technical support manager Martin Heine said. The Department of Conservation said extreme care was needed in the Nelson, Marlborough and Kaikoura alpine areas and people were advised to stay away from the Nelson Lakes National Park for the time being. Then it looks like we may have another pretty cold sou'wester going into the weekend. Miller said another low pressure system was heading for New Zealand on Thursday and more snow was possible at first in inland Canterbury and Otago basins before milder north-westerlies on Friday. - CD Lando Lando by Louis L'Amour - Audio Book CD a Novel in The Sacketts saga Get Other Louis L'Amour Audio Books click here ' Lando by Louis L'Amour - (Read by Ron McLarty) Audio Book CD Brand New: Still shrink wrapped Unabridged Lando Sackett got to Texas with a well-oiled dogleg a racing mule that didn't look worth its salt and a damn good idea of the whereabouts of buried gold across the border in Mexico. Little stretch of Canterbury road a big killer - police Thursday, 14 August Police are stepping up enforcement of a short stretch of Canterbury highway they say contributes disproportionately to the number of deaths in the region. Police are concerned that the 63km of State Highway 7 between Hanmer Springs and the Lewis Pass accounts for 10 per cent of the fatalities on Canterbury state highways. Speed is a major factor which leads to many crashes, and certainly has a direct effect on the outcome of any crash regardless of cause. This is unacceptable , Senior Constable Richard Parker of the Canterbury Highway Patrol said today. He said police enforcement in the area would be stepped up over the coming months, with specific emphasis on speeding drivers and those who failed to keep left. The faster you go the bigger the mess. The highest recorded speed was 162kph, with a 20-year-old West Coast man arrested for reckless driving and failing to stop for police. In the first two weekends of the operation 135 infringement notices were issued, mostly for speed. - EMyth - GERBER NEW Book Mastery E-Myth MICHAEL E-Myth Mastery by Michael E. Flat the focus of police inquiry - Friday, 22 August JOHN KIRK-ANDERSON/ INQUIRY: police survey the scene at the block of flats in the Christchurch suburb of Riccarton where Kerry Downey was last seen alive. Police investigating the death of Christchurch woman Kerry Downey are focusing their

investigations on the flat she was last seen visiting. She was last seen alive by neighbours of a Riccarton flat from which she was picking up a stray cat on Monday night. Downey, 52, disappeared after 7pm on Monday and her body was found down a bank on a Port Hills street on Wednesday morning. Police cordoned a large part of the housing estate, surveyed the area and examined the interior of the flat. The flat, in one of three large blocks of Housing New Zealand homes in Riccarton Road, was the scene of forensic investigations yesterday. The occupant of the flat is understood to have called Downey's workplace, the Cats Protection League, to have a cat taken from the property. The scene investigation is expected to take several days. The red Suzuki Alto hatchback was found in Neville Street, off Barrington Street, in Spreydon, a short drive from where Downey's body was found. Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Wormald said Downey's car was still a focus of the inquiry, and he appealed for any sightings of it. People in the neighbourhood are being approached to establish when the car was parked. Wormald said police wanted to find out when the car was left before it was found at 2am on Wednesday. Clearly, the car has been driven from Riccarton Road, where Ms Downey was last seen. This is an important aspect of the inquiry, he said. The car had been removed from Neville Street and was being examined by police forensics experts. The car could have been used to travel around the city, so any sightings of it are important. Formal identification of the body was completed yesterday afternoon. Wormald said an examination of the area where the body was found in Worsleys Road, Westmorland, had been completed. When Downey did not turn up for work on Tuesday, Sisson and another friend of Downey's went to the scene of her last callout and, after speaking to neighbours, alerted police. Wendy Sisson, Downey's long-time friend and fellow cat rescuer, said she had spoken to members of Downey's family, who were distraught . He was remanded in custody. A man appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Tuesday charged with the theft of a cat-carry case. . This eloquent lesson Telescope project may lift the south . Telescope project may lift the south By DYLAN THORNE - Friday, 22 August An Australasianbid to build the world's largest radio telescope could be worth tens of millions of dollars to the Southland economy. Venture Southland enterprise projects manager Robin McNeill said the region was ideally placed to take advantage of the project, following news the Government would formally support Australia's push to host the giant next generation Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope. If Australia won the bid to build the $2. The project had the potential for exciting new discoveries on the origins of the universe and could revolutionise astronomy, physics and many other areas of science, Mr McNeill said. But such was the scale of the SKA — it would have thousands of antennas spread over 3000km — that observatory sites in New Zealand would be needed and would be linked by high-speed data connectivity, Mr McNeill said.6 billion SKA, its centre would be in Western Australia. Up to 50 satellite dishes could be based in Awarua or on the south coast of Southland, Mr McNeill said. Southland was ideally placed to be one of the sites, he said. Early tests suggest that Awarua, which already housed an international spacecraft tracking station, would be the perfect radio quiet-spot with no interference, he said. The cost to install and build those dishes would be worth $50 million alone. You can't go any further south without having accommodation and transport problems. The construction of the tracking station meant Southland had a track record in the field and its position on the south-eastern fringe of Australasia also worked in its favour. SKA New Zealand project leader Sergei Gulyaev said sites in Southland and Northland were likely because they were ideally positioned geometrically to link into the project. Venture Southland, with the Auckland University of Technology and the Ministry of Economic Development had undertaken radio noise tests and the results had been promising. If Australia was successful and Southland was selected as a site it would see a massive improvement in information technology associated with the project. Sites in the two areas would extend the range of the antennas from 3000km to 6000km, he said. Mr McNeill said if the project got the green light it would be a major boost for industrial tourism and employment in Southland. This would include extremely fast broadband and the use of supercomputers, Mr Gulyaev said.6 billion Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a radio telescope 50 times larger than anything available now. STAR GAZING A 19-nation consortium will build the $2. While a radio telescope usually consists of a single dish, the completed SKA will be a single radio telescope consisting of several thousand dishes all linked together as a single instrument, which feed back to a computer. The SKA is a global radio astronomy project. South Africa is short-listed with Australia to host the radio telescope, which is being billed as one of the great scientific projects of the 21st century. Scientists have no idea what they will find with it, saying that they will be able to probe the Dark Ages , the area where the first light in the

universe formed. The hosting site for the SKA will be decided in November 2012 by global scientists. The hosting site for the SKA will be decided in November 2012 by global scientists. Wayne awake as brain cut . Wayne awake as brain cut By REBECCA PALMER Saturday, 16 August ANDREW GORRIE/ FINE WORK: Neurosurgeon Martin Hunn performed an awake craniotomy on Wayne McNeill (inset). Wayne McNeill needed a brain tumour like he needed a hole in his head. Mr McNeill, 51, of Hastings, was the first Wellington Hospital patient to have an awake craniotomy. He briefly got both - and was awake when surgeons removed the tumour through the hole. Mr McNeill, a coolstore supervisor for the apple industry, was not worried about being the first. The hospital's brain surgeons have performed the surgery on two other patients since his operation a few weeks ago. I knew they would be taking special care of me. I thought: `Well, they are not going to muck this up'. We are trying to be as aggressive as we can be within the safety limits, neurosurgeon Martin Hunn said. Operating on patients who are awake allows surgeons to remove the maximum amount of a tumour without interfering with critical parts of the brain, because the patient can talk to them. Mr McNeill started off the operation asleep but was woken up to carry out a series of verbal tests. In Mr McNeill's case, the area of the brain that controls speech was particularly vulnerable, but surgeons were not sure exactly how far they could go in removing the tumour. He did not feel any pain, but knew when they hit a part that affected speech. While he was doing this, the surgeons stimulated parts of his brain so they could establish which areas were safe to cut.. I kept on trying hard to say that word but it wouldn't come . But it wasn't horrible.. The operation required skilful anaesthetists because the patient had to be able to be woken up and put back to sleep easily. Mr Hunn said: Luckily for us, the brain doesn't feel pain but the skin does, and the muscles. He was incredible . Mr McNeill could have chosen to go to sleep while the actual tumour was removed, but he opted to stay awake, Mr Hunn said... [Neuropsychologist] Kay Cunningham basically just chatted to him for two hours. [Neuropsychologist] Kay Cunningham basically just chatted to him for two hours. Mr McNeill said he barely noticed the surgeons were operating. If he started to look around, Ms Cunningham would remind him to concentrate on talking to her. Once the tumour was removed, he was left with a cavity in his brain about three centimetres in diameter. If he had not been awake, it would have been too risky to remove such a large amount, Mr Hunn said. Previously, the patient would probably have had a biopsy and radiation treatment. He said awake craniotomy required skilled staff, including anaesthetists, an EEG specialist to record the brain's electrical activity, the surgeons, the neuropsychologist and a speech language therapist. The hospital had originally expected to do about six such operations a year. It's all gone so smoothly that we are probably looking at doing it more often. A neuropsychologist and a speech-language therapist prepared Wayne McNeill for surgery. They checked he was psychologically ready, practised relaxation techniques and rehearsed the tests he would do during surgery. On the day of the operation, Mr McNeill's head was clamped in a frame and he was given a general anaesthetic. He started the operation asleep, so he did not have to listen to the sound of his head being drilled open. That could be distressing, neurosurgeon Martin Hunn says. Once asleep, Mr McNeill was given a local anaesthetic. Surgeons cut a hole about 7cm by 5cm in the top of his head. Once his brain was exposed, a special machine mapped the tumour's boundaries. A human being can't look at a tumour and tell where the edge of it is. After the machine had finished its mapping, clinicians placed labels on different parts of the brain to mark the ridges. Electrodes were also attached to record electrical activity and detect any seizures. Surgeons then stimulated parts of his brain to check his movement. The general anaesthetic was withdrawn and Mr McNeill soon woke up. The local anaesthetic protected him from pain. He was given tasks to carry out, including counting to 20, repeating phrases and identifying pictures. While he was doing this, the surgeons, Ales Aliashkevich and Mr Hunn, carefully stimulated different parts of his brain. We put all that information together and decide what can be removed and what

can't. Mr McNeill opted to stay awake while the surgeons removed the tumour. They then closed his head. Police use blowtorch on gang's door . Police use blowtorch on gang's door The Wednesday, 13 August Armed police used a blowtorch to gain entry to a motorbike gang's headquarters during a dawn raid, seizing property to help pay for more than $100,000 in outstanding court fines. Twelve police, including four who were armed, helped district court staff gain entry to the Satan's Slaves headquarters in Luxford St, Wellington, yesterday, impounding a Ford Explorer, a Harley-Davidson motorbike and $2000 worth of electronic goods owned by two gang members. Detective Sergeant Martin Todd said that, though the pair did not answer the door, police knew they were inside so used a blowtorch to get past the strengthened door. One owed about $18,000 in fines and the other $84,000. You will have to pay your fines even if you are a gang hiding behind fortified doors. We had to use force and began using a blowtorch but, once one hinge had been blasted off, they decided to open the door. District court staff asked for police help during the raid because the gang members were judged to be a risk. Apiece of history that carried the royal family around New Zealand is to give Wellingtonians' final journey an illustrious twist. During the royal tour the front grille and radiator were smashed when the car hit a sheep on a country road. It was transformed into a hearse by an Auckland funeral home. The company is having it fully reconditioned in Auckland. Gee and Hickton bought the car this year. It struck me how much that meant to her generation, how they loved the royal family, he said. Drunk driver's sentence angers victim's family By JENNY LING Saturday, 23 August The family whose lives were forever changed when Karl Edwards was killed on Wellington's inner-city bypass say the drink-driver's sentence was unacceptable . The loss of the 28-year-old had left an indelible void in many lives, a spokesman said as the family expressed disappointment about the 12 months of home detention given to Justine Mary Schou at Wellington District Court this week. Judge Denys Barry also disqualified her from driving for three years and ordered her to pay $8000 reparation for emotional harm to Mr Edwards' partner, Fiona McDiarmid, and his mother, Kay Edwards. Schou, 27, pleaded guilty last month to driving with close toly twice the legal blood-alcohol limit and crashing into Mr Edwards' car after driving the wrong way up the one-way section of Willis St last October. Schou, a manager from Foxton, had been drinking at a work function before the crash at the intersection of Karo Drive and Willis St. There are many, many people here whose lives have been changed and traumatised by these few moments of abhorrent inexplicable driving, he said. Mr Edwards died at the scene. She suffered severe head and back injuries and is still on crutches. The legal limit is 80mg. Schou admitted driving with an excess level of 140 milligrams of alcohol per 100 millilitres of blood. A tearful Ms McDiarmid told of her daily struggle and overwhelming grief at losing her boyfriend of four years. About 20 of Mr Edwards' family and friends, including his mother from Dargaville, attended the court. This is the man I was supposed to spend the rest of my life with, the 25-year-old teacher said. She had lived with him in Upper Hutt and planned to marry him and have children. Ms McDiarmid's father, Brian, said the decision to drive drunk was an act of supreme arrogance . Instead of saving for a wedding or our OE, I am instead saving for his headstone. Judges need to be firmer and create precedent if New Zealand is to prevent drunk drivers killing innocent people. A

Tony Veitch outside court Former sports broadcaster Tony Veitch says he's looking forward to telling his side of the story about incidents over which he faces assault charges. The charges were dated between 2002 and 2006 and relate to him allegedly assaulting his former partner, Kristin Dunne-Powell. Veitch, 34, appeared in front of a public gallery packed mainly with media in Auckland District Court today on six counts of male assaults female and one count of injuring with reckless disregard. He was remanded on bail, which was not opposed by the Crown. Veitch wore a jacket and shirt when he appeared in court and kept his head up for most of the brief time he appeared. While the past six weeks have been incredibly difficult and they have been incredibly frustrating watching this entire saga play out in the public, I can honestly say I am absolutely relieved now that there is clarity going forward and I now know what I am up against, Veitch said. His lawyer Stuart Grieve QC said the charges would be vigorously defended, something Veitch affirmed when he spoke to media outside the court. The former One News sports presenter and host of the Radio Sport breakfast show reportedly paid Ms Dunne-Powell more than $150,000 following a 2006 incident, which allegedly left her with four broken vertebrae. While I am shocked and also saddened that it has got this far in terms of all the allegations and the charges, I am more determined than ever to fight to clear my name. Veitch said today that he was looking forward to having his version of events told in the court process. Ms Dunne-Powell laid a formal complaint with police about Veitch last month. recorded MPs conversations at a cocktail party. National Party leader John Key appears to have given up hope of finding who recorded MPs conversations at a cocktail party, after CCTV footage was found to be too poor to identify the culprit. Mr Key and the three taped MPs - Bill English, Lockwood Smith and Nick Smith - viewed the video footage yesterday after National staff members spent two days studying the images to reduce the list of suspects. But he reasserted his claim that the recordings were part of a political dirty-tricks campaign - an accusation he earlier levelled at Prime Minister Helen Clark, who has described it as paranoia. It's fair to say the pictures are not high definition. I had a quick glance at the tapes, Mr Key said. Mr Key said his staff would continue to work through the material, but it now appears the investigation will quietly be shelved. For this reason I will not be spending any more time on them. Wellington City Council initially said it did not have video footage of the area in Wellington's Michael Fowler Centre where National's annual conference was held. Lockwood Smith has already said he was not certain he could identify the person he was speaking to when he was taped. Mr Key had accused the Labour Party of dirty tricks after the recordings were made public, claiming a Labour snoop was behind the taping. But it supplied the tapes on Friday after National threatened legal action to get video from other areas. Miss Clark has dismissed the claim and TV3, which ran extracts of the tapes, has said the person who recorded them insisted he was not a member of any political party. Yesterday he said: I think fair-minded Kiwis will see this for the dirty trick it is. Crime crashes promising career . Crime crashes promising career and Saturday, 16 August In 2005,Jayant Singh was a struggling young driver, relying on cast-off tyres and doing his own mechanics to chase his car-racing dream. By late 2006, he had quit his job, his car was freshly painted, and he was spending freely - always paying in cash. Instead, he had turned to daylight robbery. The racing fraternity assumed he had sponsorship. On a sunny Friday morning in August 2006, as three security guards went to fill the Left Bank cash machine in Cuba St, Singh came up behind them with a knife and gun and said: You know what to do. Jayant George Singh, 29, of Ngaio, Wellington, admitted yesterday two aggravated robberies and an aggravated burglary, which together netted him $190,000. In December, he robbed some security guards again - including one of his victims from August. They put the money in a bag and he fled with $115,000. The money turned his

fortunes around, but ultimately brought him crashing down. This time, he singled out a National Bank cash machine in Victoria St and made off with $75,000. Singh, 26, was one of the quickest drivers in the Formula Ford last season, though he was driving an old car on a very limited budget, The reported in October 2005. A year before the robberies, Singh was being touted as a promising driver who regularly beat competitors whose cars should have been faster than his. The Victoria University science graduate was polite, but did not socialise a lot with other drivers. While other drivers had substantial crews and facilities behind them, Singh did his own mechanics and travelled with just his parents and a small tent. In his first season he struggled and finished towards the back of the field. In October 2005, he entered a contract to buy a $140,000 Toyota Racing Series car, a sophisticated single-seater with wings and slick tyres. In November 2006, however, his car was gleaming white and sporting Valvoline logos. Other teams hired expert engineers but again Singh had limited resources and could not even afford new tyres - he had to use tyres cast off by other teams. It appeared he had found substantial sponsorship. He had quit his job at a specialist telecommunication equipment firm to concentrate on racing and was spending freely, paying in cash. Last season Jayant Singh had a miserable time, under-resourced and running at the back of the field, the magazine reported. A report in Speed Sport magazine in December 2006, the month he was arrested, noted his finances seemed to be looking up. Singh's talent on the racetrack did not, however, extend to aggravated robbery, and he was arrested after an extensive police investigation that used the gene-carrying molecule dna, CCTV footage, and a $500 petrol voucher reward for the public's help to find his getaway car to link him to three offences - a failed burglary in May 2003 and the two robberies. This season he has found more support, bought new tyres for the first time, quit his job to concentrate on racing and, after two rounds and consistently good placings, he stands fifth on points. They also found a a gun and a knife. They also found a a gun and a knife. Now, it will be a while before he experiences the thrill of the racetrack again. His sentencing is on September 8. Fire starts near flat's light bulb . Fire starts near flat's light bulb Tuesday, 19 August A Wellington apartment building was evacuated after a fire started around an energy-efficient light bulb, spewing smoke and flames across the ceiling. American student Andrew Mendes was in the lounge of his Dixon St flat on Friday night when the fire alarm activated and he rushed outside to see the roof above his door engulfed in flames. The Fire Service has confirmed that the light fitting contained a spiral energy-efficient bulb, which had been taken away as part of their investigation. Unable to use the fire extinguisher, he ran back into his kitchen, returning with pots of water to put out the fire. There was a lot of smoke but I didn't want my stuff to burn up so I took care of it. Mr Mendes said he was checked by paramedics for fear he had been exposed to mercury from the bulb. It makes you wonder if being better for the environment is worth it when you get fires [like this]. Since then I've heard a lot about these light bulbs. It was definitely one of those energy-efficient bulbs but it's too early to say if the bulb or the electrical wiring was at fault, he said. Senior station officer Paul Lyall said firefighters arrived to find the melted lightbulb lying on the carpet of the second storey foyer, electric wires hanging from the ceiling and scorch marks around the light fitting. New wiring had been put in the building only three weeks ago which may have been a contributing factor, he said. No one was injured and residents evacuated the building after smoke alarms went off. The revealed last week that Government safety watchdog Energy Safety has asked the Fire Service to document failures involving energy-efficient bulbs.
